Was The Blue Valley Inn on old route 49? I remember Marloffs near Richie Road. Anywhere near there?
I think the Airport was the Old County Airport. Seem to remember it being a quonset building and chainlink fence. I remember seeing a model airplane club flying their planes there. I don't remember ever seeing any real planes in my time.

Yes, the Blue Valley Inn was on Old 49 (Old River Road) near Ritchie Road. That's about all that airport was. Mostly model plane clubs were there. It used to sound like giant bees were flying around. After 4 or 5 hours of that whine noise, you were ready to go shoot them out of the sky! Of course now we get to listen to the beeping of the equipment from Walmart backing up 24 hours a day.

Were you familiar with Helene's Hideaway on old 49? I played there back in the 70's with Stan Fish. I went back some years later and couldn't find any sign of where it had been. It was a fairly large building. I heard rumor that it burned down.
I seem to remember explosions in the corn fields to keep the birds away on Richie Rd. I used to take my kids swimming at the second bridge. One day while driving back home we could see something in the road but couldn't make out what it was. When we got closer we could see that a skunk had been hit and a whole bunch of it's babies were gathered 'round her. Sure the kids wanted to take them home. They're so cute.

I remember Helene's Hideaway well. I used to go there often. My buddy Dick Bowen used to play and sing there on occasion. Yes it did burn down. It was an old wooden structure and it went up like a paper bag when it caught fire.

Jonhynes, you just brought tears to my eyes with that story about the skunk & its babies...

Yes, the Hideaway burnt in the late 80's sometime. I was a teen so I never went there. But I remember when it burnt. I was dating my husband then and the farm being right down the road, I was afraid it might have been the barn. There is a house there now.
Capana's have the poppers going to keep the birds away from their corn.
Sad about the skunk babies. We saw the same thing this year with a fox. Talk about heartbreaking. Cars around here don't know the meaning of the words "speed limit".

And you just know the babies didn't make it without their Mama...

Thanks so much guys. I was beginning to think I had imagined the whole Helene's Hideaway experience up in my head.
I played several jobs with Rich, both Rock and Country. He's a good man and a great guitar player.
If you think the story of the baby skunks brought tears to your eyes imagine my kids all crying because they wanted me to pick them up. I'll take care of them. Honest. Of course the wind was blowing East and they couldn't smell the spray until we had passed them. Yea and me too even before I smelled the mother. Sniff, Sniff

Stoney if it makes you feel any better I have a skunk living in my garage that I'll just bet is a descendant of those very babies.

I got married the first time in 1966. I was home from Viet Nam on leave and we got married in St Johns Church in Newport. We were having a reception outside in my mom and dad's yard, but were setting up the buffet tables in the two stall garage. Well, the morning of the wedding, we went out to set up tables and stuff, and we were going to move the garbage cans outside. Low and behold, there is a skunk in one of the cans. We quietly put the lid on. My dad and I carried it out through the back yard to a large embankment that went down to a creek, and gave it the heave ho, garbage can and all, haha. I think the whole wedding would have had to be postponed if that damn skunk had sprayed, LOL.
PS, when the can hit the rocks in the creek bottom, that skunk came out of the can, and hauled ass up the other side of the creek, never to be seen again.

Obies Drive Inn and OBey's Restaurant on Oneida Street in Washington Mills. Bernice = Mrs Obey, and her daughter Donna ran the restaurant.
Little farther up Oneida was Massoud's Banquet Hall which Omar and John and the Massoud family owned and operated. Popular for Weddings and parties great food.
Later Joe Hanna bought it. (Jimmie's Father)

Doug's Busy Bee seemed to be an old people's hangout. Prices were right and the food was good. I went there with my parents ages ago.
Sunny Honey was another similar style place to eat on Oriskany Street.
