Clipper mentioned in another thread Dandee Donuts. It got me thinking about places that aren't around anymore. Does anyone remember going to Sisto's in Rome? I was a little girl and I remember going to it when it was still on Dominick St. I can just remember standing up in one of the booths and looking over the back.
How about Daddy's? My parents took me there when I was about 3 I think.
Pizza Villa on the Corner of Erie Blvd and Gifford Road? They had great pizza!
Marina's on Black River Blvd? I used to go there with my friends when I was a teenager.
The Red Coach? Went there for breakfast in my 20's.
Ah, memories!

Worked for Dandee Donuts after the Air Force in 71 and 72 as their delivery driver out of the one (DiRizio's Bakery) on Mohawk St where Mickey D's is now. Had two routes actually.
5AM to 9AM donuts to GE's, Mutual Insurance, Clover Leaf in Chadwicks, State Hospital, (that was always exciting), listening to Gregg Mc Shea on WTLB on my transistor radio. Can't remember how many times it fell out of the truck!
9AM to 2PM was a bread route with some of the best delis (Italian Salamenare; sp) James St. and Pizza places (Tony's North Utica) on the route along with some super markets and corner stores. Didn't pay anything, lots of hours, but it was fun getting around and meeting people.
Some of my best stories of my late brother Mike and I come from that truck when he used to come with me on his days off from Proctor. Sometime when I have an hour I'll tell them.

Nofrii's on Oriskany Blvd had some good food and oh - the bread was the best I've ever had. It was a family recipe. I spoke of the old Hungry Boy before but since remembered, we had a prep cook in the back, a sweet older Italian lady whose name I can't remember, that made the best ever meatballs!

I'll have to back up the Nofri's vote. Really enjoyed that place. Good food, nice people, affordable. My wife and I went there weekly until it closed.

Nofri's was great! I also remember some of the places in Rome that countrygal is talking about. Candyland was a really neat place, and I remember the Pizza Villa. Marina's is familiar, but I can't put a envision it.
Was the Red Coach where Teddy's ended up in the plaza on Black River Blvd? Sisto's was always a Rome landmark.
Another Rome favorite was Vinci's on E. Dominick. It was run by a retired Rome cop, and one of the specialties was tripe, done italian style. You could not get near the place for the crowd on "tripe day".
DeMattio's was, and probably still is, another favorite lunch spot, along with Bucky's on Floyd Ave, Coal Yard's, and the old hotel on S. James St.
You guys are making me hungry!!! Wish I could have some "NY State" food, haha.

Yes, Red Coach was where Teddy's is now. DeMatteo's still going strong as is the Franklin Hotel on James St. in Rome.
How about the Unwined Inn where Aquino's is now?

Unwind in. Oh yeah we had many business luncheons there when visiting officers were in town for one thing or another. Good old Steve Hayes. Let the wrong head think for him and all he ended up with in the divorce was the yellow slicker he wore in the commercials, hahahaha! I wonder if the waitress he ran off with stayed with him when the place closed and he lost his ass.
I still go to Aquino's at least once when I am in town. My youngest used to live in Rome, and my middle son and daughter in law love the pizza there.

I remember S kickers. They had the all you can eat steak?? You would get your normal helping of steak and if you wanted more, you waited for about 15 minutes for about 4 ounces more, and then another 15 or 20 minutes if you wanted more. They made sure that you didn't eat too much steak, haha.
Was that S Kickers? They had line dancing lessons too didn't they?
I am really old. I remember when the place was a bar run by Paul Coleman and a partner. Paul used to sing in there. He sounded exactly like Bobby Goldsboro, (way before your time Lilbump) His full time job was at Marcy State Hospital. the big palomino horse that was there from the 50's when the place was the golden palomino night club ended up down along route 5 in Schuyler that last I knew.
I guess the troopers didn't need it, haha.

I remember Paul Coleman, used to go there to hear him many a weekend in the early 70's or was it the late 60's? He now owns a place in A Bay - can't remember the name but I've been there a couple times and the food is good. I think he still sings there occassionaly. I loved t hear him to Dock of the Bay.

"Does anyone remember S Kickers? I used to go there when I was little, I think my dad worked there."
Now I REALLY feel old. My girlfriend at the time and I used to be at S Kickers every weekend. How about Frankies in West Utica? There are rumors that my Dad would take me in there when he worked at Schiedelmans. He would set me up on the bar and I would yodel for cokes. Did I mention I was about 3 at the time? Later in life I was still hanging around bars with my Dad, Rileys Place on Commercial Drive. It's Symions now.
