Where do you find all this stuff? I was looking at an article for DiCastro's, and Andre's fire was on the Right side of the page. I couldn't find it when I was looking for it though.

Boy, am I gonna miss West End Seafood this Christmas Eve. Not only was their fish delicious and fresh, but they were only a block from my house which made it so very convenient on that busy holiday eve. ;D Jon, there's one you posted that doesn't make me feel ancient. Never heard of Verni's restaurant until now.

When I was driving a bus for Central NY Coach Lines full time, prior to going to work at the base, I took Shirley Scialdo and her mom to Florida one winter on a 9 day tour. Shirley was a wonderful, bubbly gal. Is she still around Sunshine? I should ask my son. He lives next door to the house where Shirley and her parents lived in Marcy. She was quite heavy in those days, but a beautiful girl and lots of fun to be around. Her mom was a really nice lady also. My goodness, that has been over 30years ago now, and her mom was in her golden years back then, although her and the father still ran the store and the children worked for mom and dad.
The only way to find fresher or better fish was to go to Boston or the Jersey Shore and catch it yourself. I loved stopping there for a fish fry to go when I lived on Parker St. It was only a few blocks home, and the fish and fries would still be piping hot when I sat down to eat.
Oh oh, we woke up the old memory again. Talking about the seafood market also brings back memories of the wonderful fish fries and french fries from Jeans Beans, both in Whitesboro, where Burger King is now, and uptown on Arnold Ave. Used to get those french fries in a paper sack for lunch when I was at Whitesboro High in my freshman year, before moving to N Utica. Used to get them that way at the N Genessee Diner too. Just fries in a brown paper sack with lots of salt and ketchup, and they gave them to you with a two prong wooden cocktail fork to eat them with.
God I love this thread and the memories!

I think Watertown still has a Jean's Bean place. I saw the sign there on our many travels through but never had the opportunity to stop. Was one of the best places along with West End Seafoods for a damn good fish fries. Miss them both.

I had forgotten the name of the street where the uptown Jean's Beans was. It was Hampden Place, not Arnold Ave. Arnold Ave is by the NY Telephone building isn't it. Hell, I can't remember. I used to know every damned street in the city when I worked on the ambulance, and I knew all of the streets that crossed Genessee Street from when I drove the Syracuse Bus for Central Coach. Mandatory stop on each westbound trip was a short double parked stop for a coffee to go at the Uptown White Tower.
i am confused with the ad from Bea's Tavern. I always thought that it was Barnes Ave where they were on River Road. I never knew that Schuyler St crossed the canal and intersected with River Road. I was only in Bea's a couple of times, but went there a few times when it was a produce market. Is the building still there?
Buffalo Head was great in those days. I don't really care for it as much in late years. When I lived on Kayuta Lake, I became quite fond of the food and folks at Garramone's instead. I do remember in the 60's going to Buffalo Head with my first wife for a "steak for two" on our anniversary every year. It was a huge rib steak and the usual mashed potatoes, veggies and salad.
I can't place where the Supershef was across from the junior high in Whitesboro. What time period was that place there? We used to cross the old abandoned Sauquoit Creek Bridge behind Parkway Jr High and go to the Golden Point, which along with Daddy's, Carrol's, and McDonald's, was one of the first 15 cent hamburger places in the area.
Other favorite places in the Whitesboro, Yorkville area for highschool kids were Voss's, the Frozen Cow, and a drive in barbecue place that was where Holland Farms is now. French fries and cokes in winter were found at Neisner's in the Whitestown Plaza and at the Yorkville Diner, King Coles in the plaza.
