I had forgotten the name of the street where the uptown Jean's Beans was. It was Hampden Place, not Arnold Ave. Arnold Ave is by the NY Telephone building isn't it. No Arnold is where Dandee Donuts was on Genesee St and West across Sunset to Gilmore Village. The street you're describing is Shepherd Place where the Fire Station is also, but not the NY Telephone building anymore. Looking at the Uptown Theater there was a Gas Station to the left and then Hampton Place. It curved 90 degrees to the left at Jean's and crossed Carlile, then dead ended at Amy Ave. (at Dick Laurey's driveway) Jean's is now some kind of Doctor's Offices and Medical Building.

a drive in barbecue place that was where Holland Farms is now. That was Sal's Bar-B-Q at the corner of Edwards and Oriskany Blvd. There were screened windows where you could buy Ham, Beef and Pork Bar-B-Qs, much like Voss's. He closed for the Winter, as did Voss's.

Mandatory stop on each westbound trip was a short double parked stop for a coffee to go at the Uptown White Tower. What side of the street was the White Tower on at that time. It was on the East side of Genesee and then it was moved across the street next to Shopper's City.

I remember the White Tower on both sides of the street, but when I drove the Syracuse Bus, it was on the west side of the street, next to Shopper's City.
Boy, there is another memory. Who would have thought back in the days when bargain Christmas shopping meant going to State St. Mill, Stars and Shopper's City, that we would be inundated with stores like Walmart, Target. We thought back in those days that Nichols was a huge place, and when Bradlee's opened in the Riverside Mall, I was seriously impressed. LOL.
I remember now with your reminders. Jeans Beans was behind the Mobil Station. Dr David Pierce, and a couple other Orthopedic Doctors later had a medical building where Jeans was. Arnold Ave was where Dandee Donuts was, and the little seasonal soft ice cream stand. Thanks for refreshing my memory. I should remember from as recently as when I was transportation manager at the OD, in 2000 and 2001. Slipping I guess, haha.

I think Watertown still has a Jean's Bean place. I saw the sign there on our many travels through but never had the opportunity to stop. Was one of the best places along with West End Seafoods for a damn good fish fries. Miss them both. I would stop at the Jean's Beans on Hampton on my way home from school when I was in the 5th or 6th grade. I'd just buy a tiny bag of potato chips. I actually went to the Jean's Beans in Watertown more often, mostly in the 1970's. My wife is from Watertown and when we went home for the weekend, we'd sometimes go out Route 3 to the JB store. Our kids never liked their stuff, however. Too greasy, they said. They were brought up on the lighter deep frieds of McD's and KFC. Jon, the Mobil station on the corner of Hampton and Genesee was run by Mike Cuda and Don Stemmer. Don's nephew Richard Stemmer just retired from the UPD. Dick and I were same age, went to school together. Mike Cuda had previously run the Mobil at the corner of Catherine and Genesee, sort of across from the OK Lunch. I see on Google Maps that intersection isn't even there any more.

Catherine St runs behind the OD and then wraps around their parking lot and comes out on Oriskany St. just a few feet short of the ramp to the N Genessee Bridge.
Dick Stemmer is a friend of Kathy's nephew that is a retired cop. Kathy's nephew retired a few years ago and took a job as a medicare investigator. Draws his retirement and a great salary on top of it., but he travels to Syracuse to work.
I remember walking by Cuda's station on Genessee and Catherine years ago though.

i am confused with the ad from Bea's Tavern. I always thought that it was Barnes Ave where they were on River Road. I never knew that Schuyler St crossed the canal and intersected with River Road. The ad I posted was '52. Here's another from ''53. This one says Rd instead of St. I think we're talking farther East. Maybe the Corner Tavern. You're correct that it was Barnes Ave that crossed the Mohawk River and Barge Canal.

Jon, the Mobil station on the corner of Hampton and Genesee was run by Mike Cuda and Don Stemmer. I used to buy gallons of varnoline from them that I used for cleaning my printing type and other things.

Yep, T.R.'s no doubt had the best giambotte in the city. I remember one nite taking my date there after being out & having a few. I suggested she order the giambotte with hot peppers. Well, you can guess her reaction after biting into one of those peppers! Not good! Anyone remember the Modernistic on Bleecker St? Sold & now being run by Bosnians.

Hey Kracker, I remember the Modernistic very well. That was my late husband's favorite place along with Graziano's further down on Bleecker. There was also another further down on Bleecker that was owned by "Johnny Bullet." All good food but mostly the favorite "hangouts" for many of the same people. Spent a lot of hours in all just throwing the bull around. Yepper, Congetta, T.R.'s cook for many moons knew how to make the best giambotte ever. Gonna make you jealous, cause I'll be having Congetta's when I see her in two weeks. ;D

Johnny Bullets ran the Pixley with a guy named Chet. It used to be on Pixley St across from Charlestown, (Univac at the time) and they rebuilt on Bleecker. I can't remember the history, or whether it burned, or they just moved. Johnny Bullets was an old "Pug". He had boxed and trained with some of the famous fighters. In later years he just trained fighters and didn't fight. I boxed in the Navy, and he and I talked boxing many a night over beers. I can't remember the woman's name that cooked in there, but when I was working at CP years ago, we used to go there to cash our checks at lunch on payday. They had great lunch specials.
