Here, here!! ;D Sheriff Joe is my kind of guy, even if I know he couldn't do that with maximum security inmates. I'm sure he wouldn't want to take on the liability for that, but it's a great start for all involved. We do have some of his practice here in our local prisons.

I love the idea of him taking over the $17million animal control department and now the budget is $3million.
I wonder if his inmates are still eating bologna though.

Bobbbiez,
I just apologized to swimmy in a PM and I will do the same to you. I menat no disprespect, shame or belittlement to anyone. I have a very narrow, biased view on certain issues. All I was saying(assuming) was that people as yourselves keep reminding me that there is another side to every issue. I believe the death penalty is more good than, meaning I realize mistakes are made, whether it be from the investigation, the trial, or jury decision. If someone were to prove to me that the death penalty does more harm than good, then I would graciously concede, but right now I feel it is 99% good(maybe that's a little high but that's how strongly I feel).
Again, I apologize if my post offended or upset you, it certainly was not meant to be. I will try to be more user friendly in the future(tongue in cheek, Ha Ha).

Hell, wcup102, I would be very surprised if any police officer was not in favor of capital punishment for those convicted of killing one of their fellow officers.
There is a lot of sense in that opinion, seeing as it would preclude a cop killer from ever getting back on the street to take a pot shot at you.
I agree that with DNA evidence being as reliable as it has become, there is little room for doubt in the guilt of a convicted killer. Fewer innocent people are executed in prison, than are executed by criminals that live to reoffend and kill again. Criminals take that chance when they break the law. I am not a believer in 30 years worth of appeals when a jury has found a person guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
In simple english, killing a killer may prevent him from killing again. That may not sound as it was meant to, but it is simply that we have a jury system and a court system that when coupled with the latest DNA technology would not leave many innocent folks being put to death by mistake.

bobbbiez,
If an Inmate is not in the box he/she is allowed to sign out on a board and walk around freely. Of course there are certain hours they can do this, but they have more freedom than one thinks. The money that Inmates families spend in visit rooms is on the vending machines, nothing else. The soda cans are given to the Veterans committee which does help support their organization. The tax payers are burden with the rest of the cost. All prisons do offer a GED program and trade programs.
The phone home program is an expensive option. Although the rates have been lowered per the Governor. The Inmates get to pick the phone company that they wish to use. Prices can’t be too high for this program for the amount of calls that are made.
It seems like you get your same facts about my volunteer work as you do about the running of a Prison. I do commend all people that do volunteer work but there is no good that can come out of preaching God to a bunch of Inmates that did not have God in their life before coming to Jail. Maybe it's the AA program you helped out with and right after they leave they go down back and dip into some home made hooch.
I despise people that spend hour and half to two hours in an isolated part of the jail and then think they are an expert of prison life. Until you have put a uniform on and actually worked down back please don't try to give me facts that you have no comprehension of the way it really is or advocate for the Inmate that did a horrible crime and was sentence by his peers to serve time in Prison.
As for the death penalty, not only do I believe in it but I would pull the switch and sleep just fine at night.

Todd, Oops you made a mistake. Have to come to Thelma's defense. It wasn't her that said things. I DID. ;D So, you owe Thelma an apology. Not going to argue. You have your beliefs and I have mine. That's okay. But your facts on many of these things are totally incorrect. Don't know where you're getting your information from but you should check again on some of your statements and voice the facts to people when you talk. Just one quick example that will be easy for you to verify would be your statement, "the inmates get to pick the phone company that they wish to use," unless it's changed in the last 2 years which I doubt, that is an out right lie. The families were forced to use MCI which was changed two years ago to Verizon and that is fact. There is a suit by the families against the State because of that reason and I don't believe it has been settled yet. From the way you talk I believe you work inside a medium secure prison which is much, much more relaxed on the rules then the maximum prison which holds the most violent criminals and the death row inmates so all of what you say about certain freedoms the inmates have only pertain to some prisons. End of what I have to say on this issue completely. When you get your facts straight then we can have a conversation in private if you'd like. I will be more then willing to get you my phone number to do just that. Just let me know. "It is never too late to put God in ones life."

Wcup102, let me make myself clear. It takes alot to offend me when we are giving our opinions on all issues. When I say I believe everyone has the right to express their opinion and that even if I don't agree with them, I will still respect their opinion, I mean every word I say. No need for an apology. You believe one way and I another. That's just the way it is and unless you attack my family while debating an issue, I'm not offended or will I hold any kind of grudge against you. I'm easy Besides Wcup102 my Dad always told me, "don't be afraid to stand up for what you believe in, even if you find yourself standing alone." I'm not afraid!!!!!!! I thank you for your courtesy anyways.

Todd - Just wanted you to know I was NOT offended that you addressed your post to me rather than Bobbiez who has already responded to your opinion.
As much as I consider Bobbbiez a dear friend and agree with 99% of her viewpoints, on this subject I agree with you that cop killers(and correction officers) deserve the Death Penalty.
