What are some of the good places to eat in Utica and the surrounding areas? Some that come to mind are as follows: Grimaldi's, Ventura's. Alee's, Joey's on Mohawk St. and Syr., Kitlas, Symeons, Danieles, Acroplolis, Bella Mia, Michael T's, Bella Cucina, Georgio's. There are also some great spots in the North Country. Are there any good spots in the country ( but not the North Country) I remember at one time Orchard Hall was good, but the last time I was out there, it wasn't all that great. As a kid I also remember a place called "the Stone House" and also a place called "The Lake House" in I believe Richfield Springs? Has anyone ever been to "The Horned Dorset" and if so, how was it? Also, any tips on any good take-out Fish Fry places in the Utica area would be greatly appreciated.

One of my favorites was the Chesterfield (last one I visited) I went to a graduation dinner held at Ohio Restaurant. (not sure where that was exactly and all I remember it was in the middle of nowhere. Food was great though.

Fiskie, The Horned Dorset is to die for, very formal yet comfortable, the foods incredible and the service is the best you can get. Do bring your Wallet, its very pricey! If yoou like to travel a bit, Cazenovia has a few great restaurants, The Brea Loch and Lincklaen House are AAA+ and a bit more affordable (A bit, not much).

Chris, the Hotel Ohio is North of Poland and Cold Brook on Route 8. It used to be run by a German Couple and the German cuisine was excellent. I don't know who runs it now.
Fiskie, I don't know about a "take out" fish fry. We used to get them from Price Chopper in N Utica and it was very good. My favorite fish fry of all time is from the Knight's Spot in Frankfort. It's the little restaurant with the walk up ice cream window on Main Street, across from the old Union Fork and Hoe plant.

Thanks Clipper. Well that would explain the choice. My friend is German and I was just a guest and passenger and kept thinking where the heck are we.. All I see is miles of nothing. Not even homes on the way so made me wonder how the place even existed.

Fiskie, as Clip mentioned Price Chopper has an excellent fish fry and other sea food dishes you can take out. We get them all the time and if you have their card the price is very cheap, $5.00. Also, Mike's Whitesboro Fish Market at 103 Main Street in Whitesboro has great seafood dinners to go. Just call ahead to order on both. Both are very good. The best fish fry I've ever had is when the Deerfield Fire Department has theirs going. Just have to watch the newspaper when they start theirs up again. Can get orders to take out also. Hope this helps ya.

Since you and Clip and our neighbor's have all recommended it, we're definitely going to have to give it a try. BTW, just returned from Dinner at Grimaldi's. It was excellent! They had a young guy ( Anthony LaBarbera) from Herkimer there singing songs from Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin etc., and while I normally don't go for that sort of thing while I'm eating, the "kid" had an awesome voice and it was an all around great evening!

JGR -- are suits and ties required for men at the Horned Dorset? Thinking about it for dinner, but am sure to get some push back from the men in the family if it is that dressy! Thanks.

LO... the food at the Horned Dorset is exquisite and definitely not for the McDonald's mentality nor pricing expectations. A fairly decent knowledge of wines would help also. With this in mind, although perhaps not required, a jacket and tie are strongly recommended. And as JGR has indicated, be prepared for a large bill at the end of the meal.
My favorite place to get the best Chicken Marsala I've ever had is a little place called 'Cafe Del Buono' on Commercial Drive (in front of Old Navy) near the back entrance to Sangertown Square. It used to be a little bar called The Knotty Pine and now is a great restaurant, although not very big. And you might try Georgio's on Genesee St. in the village of New Hartford.
I'm not a fish fry officianado, but competition is strong here in the Utica area on Friday nights so I'm sure there are many place where you can get a great one.

Is the Hotel Ohio even still there? Last time I was out that way I don't remember seeing it anymore. I know the area pretty good, my dad has a small plot of land on Figgert Rd. Ohio is just about to the intersection with 365.
If you want a very nice dinner and have a few hours to enjoy it, Bella Vista in Mohawk. It is seasonal and is right near Shomaker Mountain. Took my wife there one year for our anniversary. You would not be disappointed.

Tie definitely, coat is optional.
Eric Del Bouno is an awesome cook! He does the Quiche of the day also. His deserts are pretty Tasty, no tie needed!

A neighborhood place that has good food at reasonable prices is Sparagna's in West Utica. Not much to look at inside but a very comfortable crowd and great Eggplant Parmigiana.

Kathy and I meet my son and daughter in-law there for dinner every time we are in town. Great food. Old fashioned neighborhood family restaurant atmosphere that we all grew up with on many corners in the city of Utica. Pescatore's was always one of my favorites years ago. Acquino's on Floyd Ave. in Rome is also a favorite. They have fabulous pizza if you want to sit down and eat a pizza in a nice restaurant setting rather than taking it out or eating at O'Scuinnizzo's.

There is this little restaurant in N.Utica right by Byrne's Dairy across from the N.Utica Plaza that everyone is raving about. Damn, I know it starts with a "B" but can't think of the name. I haven't been there yet but it's getting great reviews from everyone I talk to who has been there. They do say to get there early for dinner or you're out of luck to get a table. From what I'm hearing I am going to try the place soon.
