Well, I am following the recall effort to recall Utica's Mayor as well as I can from here in Tennessee. I applaud the initiative of William Newell in bringing the recall idea to light, and for initiating such an effort.
Whether he will be able to muster enough support to get the petitions signed, and whether the common council would support it is the next issue of concern. It seems rather strange that the common council has to APPROVE of a recall. What the hell, in many cases I have read about and seen in person here in Tennessee, it was the mayor or the council members themselves that were being recalled, and in one situation both the mayor and some of the council people. Talk about "cover your ass political garbage." It pretty much says that the voter only has the power of the vote if those already in office say that you do.
The board of elections should be required to validate the signatures on the petitions, and from there, a count should be publicized when confirmed. Next step should be to either declare the effort a failure, or if the signatures are there to proceed, an election should be scheduled within a reasonable amount of time.
It seems that the "mouthy little mouthpiece" for your "absent and silent" mayor, has taken it upon himself to take on a slander campaign and ignorant media rant to defame William Newell, rather than to address the issue at hand. Little Angelo needs some serious education in the area of tact and diplomacy. Especially since the mayor seems to be "deaf and dumb" and needs Angelo to speak to his constituents for him.
I posted to the UDN comment section and asked Mr. Newell to clarify his veteran's status, and to clear up that gray area. If he is able to clear that up, along with the rumored allegation by the opposition (most likely city hall) that Mr Newell wants to run for mayor for 1/2 the salary that Roefaro gets.
Rod made me aware of the rumor that Newell wanted to run for mayor just this morning. Maybe he can better address that rumor, but it sounds typical to me as something that would originate from city hall, in order to cast aspersion on the motive for Mr Newell's call for a recall election.
I would say that we might possibly, at some point hear from Mr Newell, but I would bet my bottom dollar that we will NOT hear from anyone at City Hall. Little Angelo, nor anyone else at City Hall has thus far, had the guts to come out and post here. They simply lurk and read daily. I rather doubt that either our forum OR the UDN are very popular among those that serve the Roefaro
adminstration. The mayor is conspicuously invisible, and Angelo never seems to leave the security of his office to mix with the citizenry. He finds it much easier to make news releases and decrees rather than to debate or discuss with anyone, the issues of concern to the voters.
That is simply the impression that I get from reading all of the local information and media resources for the Utica area. Am I mistaken in my observations?
