From Rodwilson:SO...why does it that no one from Utica has anything to say about this issue?
Well Larry T posts here often and hasn't been shy about offering an opinion. He's a member of the Utica Common Council. Well Larry, what's the deal? What do you think of Dan Labella's appointment to UPD Chief?

Gee Lioneljoe. I have to correct a minor discrepancy in your post.
Larry Tanoury Jr. is NOT a member of the Utica Common Council.
Larry Tanoury Jr. is the Oneida County Legislator, representing the 25th District.
His dad, Larry Sr. was the councilman from the 5th ward in the 80's, but Larry Jr has not served on the common council.
His dad always fought hard for the people of Cornhill on the council, and Larry Jr fights hard for the people of Cornhill on the Board of Legislators.

I also believe Mr. Tanoury Jr. gave his position in the appropriate thread regarding labella's ascension to police chief.

He's a member of the Utica Common Council. Well Larry, what's the deal? What do you think of Dan Labella's appointment to UPD Chief? He does. He's a County Legislator but his area is right smack in the middle of it. I'd be surprised to Larry speak up. Roefaro is a Democrat as is Larry. Breaking rank requires what most of our reps lack. BUT if he did pipe and broke ranks, he might just end up with a whole lot of new supporters that would work hard to change Utica and Oneida County. Someone once posted the question to Larry about breaking ranks when it counted. Here's his chance. I think there is still some question of the movement's legitimacy for the press as well as for a lot of folks. I've seen nothing to indicate that Mr. Newell is the "crackpot" that City Hall claims him to be. People here have historically run their mouths with little action. There will be little question as to the legitimacy of the RECALL. Once the petition is filed, it's up to the people to carry it. BTW Larry, my company is thrilled to be sponsoring the new Thomas Lindsey Youth Baseball program in your neck of the woods, hope to see you at some ballgames! Here's a link to Mr. Newell's youtube page if you're curious. www.youtube.com/wmenewell

Ok, well maybe he deleted it. But even he admitted it was a disgrace and that his true opinion was not a good one. He further went on to say that this political move was not defend-able.

I'm with you Swimmy. I RECALL seeing it. Think maybe he succumbed to political pressure for breaking party lines? This recall is great and all, but I'm really waiting to see if any Utican has the guts to legally challenge the appointment. labella didn't even take the proper exam to make HIM eligible for the position. An article 78 petition might make some heads roll and cause roefaro to resign before any recall petition takes a bite! I'm betting people will sign this petition, feel they did their job and go back to doing nothing. They won't lobby city council. They won't bring their own lawsuit against the appointment. They won't do anything more than the easy thing: sign a piece of paper.

Don't know the statistics for Utica, but across the nation cities are celebrating reduced crime rates and laying the accolades on their police departments. The actual reason for the drop is said to be a temporary decrease of young males in the population. And here's a related article about economic depression and crime. Includes a different take on Roosevelt's 1930's Civilian Conservation Corps. Here's why the draft will be back, although I'm sure it will be called a "peace corps" of some sort. d2crimewave.blogspot.com/2009/03/if-you-call-cat-dog-is-it-dog.html

Here's the OD's take: Note, the version that ran in the paper contained an errant graph in which they mixed up the year and it looked as though violent crime was on the rise. www.uticaod.com/news/x737336720/Multiple-factors-cause-lower-Utica-crime-rates?popular=trueSo figures, it's a national trend. "While it’s encouraging the crime index came down so much in early 2009, Oneida County District Attorney Scott McNamara said he’s cautious about what that might mean. “I don’t put a lot of weight in short-term trends,” he said. “It’s been proven that crime has a tendency to be cyclical.”" LIKE the honesty. "Still, Savage said he and his neighbors sense that crime has shifted to the city’s west side." MORE Honesty LOVE this honesty, “I’ll be honest with you, there are times we are saying, ‘What are we doing that’s so good?’” Deputy Chief Mark Williams said."

At the very least, with an Article 78 petition, it would draw out some answers no one seems willing to provide. And, it could result in the appointment being overturned!
