wcyb.com/news/local/average-tennessee-gasoline-price-jumps-18-cents-to-407-per-gallonWe had a break for a week or two but the price of gas has climbed from $3.65/$3.75 back up to $4.07 yesterday. The few stations that were holding the line had to buckle and raise the price to what the other stations around the area had been charging for several days. We took a break from the war in Ukraine, all the covid news, a politics. We spent Saturday and Sunday getting away to Pigeon Forge and a trip over the mountain from Gatlinburg to Cherokee NC to the casino for a few hours, capped off with a great steak dinner back in Pigeon Forge Tn. before heading home yesterday afternoon.

Yup it appears we are in an upward spiral and where it goes nobody knows. Even COVID is raging its ugly head again and we are in the red zone of high contamination rate for our County and State. News just said to get ready for a dangerous surge this Autumn.
What happened Sunday cause this proboard was down all day. Covid not login and was not listed in directory. I think Putin must have something to do with this.
This week the weather will be high summer heating. Will air conditioning be necessary? More to come!

I got gas this past Thursday at BJ's for $4.199 a gallon......$76.45 to fill up from about a 1/4 tank. Gas Buddy says it's up to $4.299 right now. This crap is crazy!

I have noticed that BJ's is well below the current asking price for any given day. Normally $4.49 and diesel $6.15.

Fastrac in Marcy without discount card is $4.49/gal. for regular. I figured $5/gal. by July 4 but at the rate their going we'll be lucky if we're not paying that by 6/1. They still have plenty of time to jack the price for Memorial Day.

I am beginning to think that gas for cars should also be tied to a federal program of need based on income for everyone in USA. It is so necessary. Jobs and the better jobs are tied to peoples ability to drive a car to work. Many municipalities do not offer Bus service to area's where better jobs are an option. Hell the HEAP program is a federal program that helps people based on income and they are very generous. Many have had their entire houses sealed against cold and bad weather in order to save energy and reduce costs.

There are hundreds of thousands of gig workers doing deliveries for outfits like Uber & DoorDash that are considered private contractors so they are using their own vehicles. Thay have to be getting crushed by these gas prices because as far as I know Uber etc does not reimburse them for fuel. This keeps up these workers are going to throw up their hands & say the hell with it.
Not to mention truckers with Diesel at over $6/gallon.

The young couple whose property borders ours on the backside were driving two diesel powered vehicles. She normally drives a Mercedes and he has been driving a Chevy 1 ton dually pickup with a diesel engine. I spoke with him the day before yesterday when I noticed his wife driving a Hundai mid-size SUV. He bought her the SUV and he is driving a jeep wrangler that he had as a project car.
I filled the little Equinox yesterday after our trip on Sunday. It was $4.07 in the morning and by the time I went to buy gas in the afternoon it was $4.25 so it went up 18 cents in a matter of hours. I had Kroger fuel points so I filled for $4.10. I put 7 gallons in for $28 and change. If I had the truck and filled from 1/2 tank it would have taken at least 12 gallons and would have cost me$49 and change. There was a guy filling a diesel pickup and he put $100 in the tank. He said he runs a roofing company with his brother and they have a total of 4 diesel pickups that need refueling at least once and sometimes twice a week. He tries to fill them when they hit 1/2 tank. For a small business owner that hits him in the wallet pretty hard.
I can't imagine being and independent trucker at the present time. To fuel an over the road tractor could cost upwards of 6 or 7 hundred bucks.

Wow I was just going to ask you Clipper about diesel prices for independent truckers. We are in for some dangerous times ahead if much needed good and supplies cannot be found in stores because of a lack of truck drivers or prices go so sky high that most goods and services become unaffordable. I bet many people are fuming that they spent their stimulus money od huge TV's and other luxury items.
I think Biden may have to seriously look into another round at stimulus money so we can buy gas, food and an occasional stocking or shoe!

I guess we are fortunate. Both Kathy and I still have our stimulus money in our savings accounts. I have made a couple of credit card purchases over the last few months and paid them off the first of the following month in order to avoid hitting the savings account for a temporary cash flow shortage when an urgent and unexpected need has come about.
We DID take some money out of savings to cover the difference between what we got for the truck and the price of the car. Haven't had a car payment for several years and at our ages we didn't want to have a monthly commitment to a financial institution.
I know that some people prefer to use credit cards or pay things with apps on their phones, but I prefer to visit the ATM for cash or use a debit card for many purchases throughout the month, keeping just enough in my checking account to cover routine daily expenses. Having the full credit limit available on my cards along with the savings just gives me a more secure feeling. Just my personal preference.

Barb was having a problem when she tried to send our older son a gift card to Home Depot and charge it to my Home Depot card. The transaction just wouldn't go through. I don't use the Home Depot card often, but I have maxed it out twice buying materials for major home products. Both times was when they were offering 0% interest if it was paid off within xx months. I was quite attentive about paying it off on time every month.
I didn't use it for a long time after paying it off but one day when I was making a small purchase there was a line for checkout. I was standing in line cash-in-hand when the person directing people to registers said he had an opening for credit only. I got my card out and went to a self check-out lane. I swiped my purchase, inserted my card and followed the instructions. The transaction failed. Tried again, same result. Someone came over to help and got the same result. He then checked me out manually and took my cash.
When I got home I went on-line and found that my account had been suspended due to inactivity. I guess you need to use it occasionally in order for it to stay active.
Barb got around the latest problem by going on her computer to make her purchase rather than using the ap on her phone. I checked our account balance and found that I have a credit balance so the card should work fine.

I guess I better go to Home Depot for something shortly. I haven't used that card in quite awhile. I need to get the spring goodies for the yard. Mulch, some lawn patch, potting soil, grass seed, and some pepper plants if they have some that look decent.

I tried growing green bell peppers several times when various landlords allowed it and when I had my home for a short time. Always failed. I do not thing we get enough heat and sun! May be wrong but something is up with that. One of my Uncles who has his house in Rochester always had a huge garden and his wife my Aunt always canned many veggies plus caned homemade pasta sauce and chili. I remember the tomatoes and different varieties, cukes, bell peppers, hot peppers, eggplants, zucchini and summer squash and the green beans and Italian green beans the pole beans which I love and cauliflower as well as other delights plus various herbs.. When I was living in seminary out there in the spring on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon I would drive out to help him. It was fun.....I miss that. Reminded of my Grandfathers garden which was a full lot way down Miller Street from James Street.

We usually have good luck with our peppers and get a pretty bountiful yield. I put a couple tablespoons of epsom salt in the hole, add an inch of dirt, and then the plant, keep them watered and fertilized a couple times through the summer and they keep on coming right into fall and until first frost.
Tomatoes? I have no luck with tomatoes. I just don't think our clay soil is conducive to growing tomatoes and I can buy canning tomatoes for about 15 bucks a bushel during the canning season.
For three or four years we grew a dozen pepper plants outside the kitchen window with potting soil filled 5 gallon pails and they did well. We both love peppers. We eat them in sauce, on hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, and kielbasa sandwiches, also with eggs, and in her sauce.

When I was on the Home Depot site, I started shopping for things for the yard. I was intrigued by Reblooming Dwarf Lilacs, much different than the lilacs which grew in our yard as a kid. Smaller (only 4ft tall) and bloom twice a season. They are not available at the store, shipped directly from the grower in Michigan. Does anyone have any real world experience with them?
