I went to Lowes yesterday for some lawn soil to repair our front lawn where the grass died off over the winter probably from ice melt. Had sticker shock- $8.00 a bag when last year the same product was about $5. Grass seed- $15.00 for a 3 lb bag. They also have veggie plants @$4. each which is why I go to local growers for my plants.

When I was on the Home Depot site, I started shopping for things for the yard. I was intrigued by Reblooming Dwarf Lilacs, much different than the lilacs which grew in our yard as a kid. Smaller (only 4ft tall) and bloom twice a season. They are not available at the store, shipped directly from the grower in Michigan. Does anyone have any real world experience with them? Have you checked with local nurseries that may carry them? Most of our lilacs have died off over the years. We lost another one when it snowed back in April. We had a slew of them & when they were in full bloom you could smell them from 50 ft away. I was thinking of replanting a few but never got around to it.

I will check with some other nurseries, just started the process yesterday. I was a little surprised that it was less expensive buying them from Home Depot than directly from the nursery.

We have two small lilac bushes in the yard that were here when we bought the house. They never seem to get any bigger and they have only bloomed a couple of times in the 20yrs we have been here. When they did bloom the blossoms were very small and were sparsely disbursed over the entire bush. I have thought about doing away with them several times but just haven't gotten around to it.
My grandparents had a huge lilac bush when I was a kid. It was 6 or 8 feet at the base and 10 or 12 feet high. It always got an abundance of huge sweet smelling blooms that you could smell all over the yard.
My dad rooted some cuttings from that bush and they thrived for years in our yard in N. Utica.

Back to the rising fuel costs. My step son just traveled from Georgia to NY with his diesel pickup. He paid $6.59 for diesel fuel in Pennsylvania. He say he will be happy to get back down South where he can buy diesel fuel for $5.25 to $5.50.
Gas prices today range from $4.04 on the Tennessee side of town to $4.22 on the Virginia side. MOST of the Virginia stations are hanging at $4.19

Up $.26/gal. in less then a week. The ripoff continues. Hey why not? Half of the Washington politicians are owned by Big Oil. And what are we hearing? Moron Elaine Stefanik ranting about pedophile rings allegedly run by Democrats.

I forget where i I was when I saw it but diesel was at $6.39. My God merchandise it going to go so high who will be able to afford it. Here's another way that they're ripping us off- shrinkflation. Which is a term economists use to throw shade on companies that shrink the size/weight of a product at the same time that they're jacking the price. Next time you're in the store PB, check the bread aisle. Loaves that used to be 1 lb. are now 14oz or less & the price is sky high. That's only one example, they're doing it with everything. And the Dems who are in power are doing nothing about any of this stuff.

Shrinkflation is not a totally new concept but it sure has become more blatantly evident and common lately. Bacon used to come in a 1 pound package and actually had a bit of lean meat running through it. Now we pay upwards of 5 bucks for a 12 ounce package of bacon and when we cook it there is about a cup of fat rendered out of it and you are left with about enough crispy bacon to make and anemic looking BLT. Hot dogs used to be packaged in 1 pound packages that contained 10 hot dogs instead of 8. We used to get more than 3 or 4 bowls of cereal out of a box. A pound of hamburger used to contain a pound of ground meat instead a combo of meat and added water. Now we have to cook ground meat first to let the water boil off and then to actually brown the meat. Before prices got so damned high I used to buy chuck roasts and grind them or have the butcher grind them rather than to buy the packaged ground chuck. Now I simply bite the bullet and buy the waterlogged ground meat out of the meat case. I saw black angus filet mignon in Food City the other day that was priced at $31 per pound. Ribeye steaks were $11 and change per pound. It was not very long ago that I bought ribeye and NY strip for 7 or 8 bucks per pound.
The most noticeable example of shrinkflation that I have seen lately is the price vs size of a rotisserie chicken. We use to be able to buy a decent sized rotisserie chicken for $4.99. Now the prices are ridiculous and the chickens are no bigger than a pigeon.

I got an estimate for a stockade fence out back a few days ago. $3500. for approx. 90 ft. of it installed, plus the 8.75% sales tax. Nice guy but I told him I'll think about it. I'm sure the cost of materials has a lot to do with it. I have another guy who's supposed to call me back today, so we'll see how that goes.
Gas a Fastrac today $4.79/gal. without discount card. Diesel $6.39.. It's going up by the day around here.

The formula factory in Sturgis MI which has been the major factor in the US shortage does supply formula to Canada so I am sure that there will be some impact. Canada does have other formula suppliers including one that makes goats milk formula.
