Ok, I've never been to Voss'. There is always such a huge line. I've heard people say the food is great and other's say it's just OK. So.....is it worth the wait in line?

I know I'll get yelled at for this but the last time I was there I wasn't very satisfied. The hot dogs were barely warm, not to mention if they were done cooking. The service has always been marginal at best. I know they are an institution, but if they were good at one time they have gone downhill a long way.

I always thought Voss had the best soft ice cream (used to be a genuine frozen custard when I was growing up) Never thought the rest of their menu was all it was cracked up to be. I guess it is about the tradition more than the food. I know people that will kill for one of Voss's ham barbecue sandwiches. To me they taste like sliced luncheon ham, with bottled barbecue sauce. As for the hot dogs, the best hot dogs used to be at the Northern Lights in N Utica years ago, but now it is the Patio Drive In that has the absolutely undisputable best hot dogs anywhere in the area. For those of you to young to remember, the Northern lights was on the point between Trenton Road and Coventry Ave in N Utica. It was like Voss's in that it was a seasonal place that used to have long lines and a loyal customer base. There is a small strip mall there now, on the point. Ice cream at Voss's and hot dogs at Patio Drive In.

I was there a year to two ago. My advice is it isn't worth waiting for in a long line, but OK if the line is short. It's a tradition, of course, but I didn't think the food was good enough to wait a long time. Anyone here go to Hydes in Liverpool? Now, to me, that is always worth waiting for.

Oh yeah!! I have been to the original Hydes in Liverpool! Mmmm Mmmm Goood!! Reminded me of the old Northern Lights.
I love good hotdogs. Down here in the south, they put coleslaw on hotdogs. (slawdogs). I am not into coleslaw on a hotdog, but it is a regional thing I guess. They also eat a lot of corndogs here, and you can get one at almost every convenience store. That is not my cup of tea either.

Even though I'm not someone who enjoys waiting in a line for anything, I do love Voss's hot dogs with chili and their pork barbecues. Also, enjoy their home made ice cream. They're great in my book. I avoid the lines by going there at 10:45am and later in the evening. Always look forward to them opening for the season and feel bad when they close. Hey, they must be doing something right as there are always lines of people willing to wait for their food and they've been in business since I was just a twinkle in my Dad's eye.

I guess it's kinda like Eddie's in Sylvan Beach. Always a line. I've been there once. The foold was ok. I don't know if I would wait in a huge line for it though.

Countrygal, don't like Eddie's anymore. Haven't been there for years. I personally think they suck and there are much better places to eat at the Beach. I loved Eddie's when it was a little place with just counter service. They were known for their hot ham barbecues and they were soooooooooooooo good. ;D Now, you won't catch me in their lines.

I haven't been to Voss' in years, but when I saw the article that they were open for the season, I was wishing I lived in the area so I could go there!
I don't know if the food really is that great. I think it is more of just a long-standing tradition to wait in line at Voss'!!

Hi Denise, I don't stand in their lines because I live close enough to get there just before they open and close to order. I won't stand in line for anything or anyone. Just don't have the patience anymore. I just love their chili dogs and pork barbecues and their home make ice cream is the best. It really is the only place I will order a banana split for myself. They're one of the very few places that use only fresh fruits on theirs. Not all that syrup sh*t I can't stand. I think they're still worth the money and I still like them as much as I've had throughout my many years. Hey, bet when I move back to Utica this weekend, it'll be one of the first places I'll eat at. If you want, I'll send you whatever you're wishing for. Had to do the same last summer for my sister who lives in CA now.

I've always enjoyed waiting in line at Voss'. There's always something or someone to look at to entertain me. Heck, I enjoy watching a skilled short-order cook work a grill.
It's like waiting in line at Stan's seafood on Fridays during Lent. It's the high-point of my social calendar. ::sigh::

What is skilled about putting 50 hotdogs on a grill and rolling them back and forth until they are done, or filling the other side with frozen burger patties, and flipping them all once? Doesn't take Wolfgang puck, or an extra set of hands to handle that load! haha!

When done correctly, the management of the workflow of orders is something to be admired. A little flair with the butter brush gives it all added value.

Frank, you got that right! Don't forget their Chili. I love it. Last year they started to sell it to the public which I was one of their first customers and froze it for the winter to enjoy when I was wishing for their chili dogs.

Thanks Bobbie. I'll be in Utica next weekend to celebrate Mother's Day with my mother. I might try to squeeze in a trip to Voss'.
