I've never been that impressed with the Buffalo Head. It's not bad, but it's nothing overly exciting either. It's just average.

I think one of the drawing cards that brings people to the Buffalo Head, is the fact that it is a nice 1/2 hr ride north, and a pleasant, relaxing trip. Not too close, and not too far.
I agree that the food is nothing exceptional, but it is very good. They also have some great specials and unique dishes, such as the cheddar apple pork chops. They do have good cooks and when you order a steak, you can depend on it being cooked the way you order it.
We always enjoyed eating in the bar, around the fireplace.
Another place we used to like to eat was the White Birch Inn, on Fairchild Rd in Remsen. They had a very nice little salad bar and homemade breads and soups. They had the best baked beans in the world, made from a recipe from "Grandma Jones", the original matron of the place. Nobody makes beans that compare to the flavor of those beans. ;D

Lots of restaurants fall down on the job on holidays, I have found. We booked our favorite one year for Easter and afterward never went back we were so upset. It was like (and I actually wondered this happened) the restaurant leased the place out for the holiday to a bunch of no-accounts.

Nothing throws the reservation schedule off like a couple of tables full of people that dawdle over desert and take an hour and a half instead of an hour to eat their dinner. Then you squeeze in a couple of "walk ins" and you have blown the whole deal for the rest of the day. It is very hard for the kitchen to keep up with that volume of business also. Holidays are tough on a restaurant staff, as well as on the customers. Having worked as a line cook for awhile for a part time job while in the Navy, I have sympathy and a little more patience for that type of situation. I look at the quality of the food, and the USUAL level of service when I choose a restaurant.

Does anyone remember the 1990 text adventure game, Spellcasting 101: Sorcerers Get All The Girls? At one point, the protaganist, Ernie, arrives at the Restaurant at the End of the Ocean--familiar to all you fans of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe--where he wittnesses the Six Phases of the Life of a Restaurant. I remember it because you had to recall the 6 phases in order to solve a puzzle later on in the game. It was a highly intelligent and humorous script. Anyways, I think The Buffalo Head has gone through all 6 phases at least 3 times in my lifetime.

IMO - The Buffalo Head is surviving only because of the original's owners way of operating this restaurant. I can remember having my entire family there for dinner and it was served family style - all the food you could eat and more. The steaks were also huge and top of the line.
Not anymore!

Don't remember that game, Frank, but I played a lot of text adventure in the 80's! Do you remember game called Amnesia? Love that game. Although it had nothing to do with fish fries. ;-)

There's The Fish Market on main street in Whitesboro across from the Post on the corner of Mohawk street.
There's Saldato's (spelling ?) right in Marcy on the main 4-corners across from the gas station.
I think all fish frys today are close to $10. Not bad considering buying a fishing pole and a fishing license. ;D

LOL, I remember Amnesia. Sounds weird, eh? That does sound weird! LOL! I loved that game, never did finish it, though. If found a place online where one can download it, but as I'd never seen that site before I don't know if it's legit and I didn't trust it so I didn't download it. Id love to play it again, but I don't have a Commodore 64! Nor do I have that game. It wasn't even my game, it was my friend Dawn's game. Every day we'd play that and if we didn't play that we played Oil Barrons. Had a lot of fun. I remember the copy protection on Amnesia. It was a subway map of NYC and if you looked at it wrong and put in the wrong answer for the copy protection, another character would come over and kill you! I learned to look at that map very carefully!

Had fish from Price Chopper in Rome today. They did a nice job and it was very good. Maybe that's the way to go.

The Westmo Diner used to have a great fish fry. Too bad it closed.
Oh and Knuckleheads fish is really good. That and some home made New England Clam Chowder on the side.
The new diner on Rt 233 Seymour's is not too bad either.

Yeppers, Price Chopper's fish is every bit as good as Stan's, I think. But without the atmosphere of Stan's.
Usually, I'll go to whichever is closer to where I'm going to eat because getting fresh fried fish home quickly is pretty important.

Moore Hotel in Barneveld is excellant as is Buffalo Head. We were looking for one at work the other day so we decided to try Casa Too Mucha. Excellant fish!!! BIG too!!! we had ours to go and they could use a little bigger portion of slaw. They just had those small taje out cups. A little pricey but I think it was very good.

Anybody want to take a trip down memory lane?? Who remembers the wonderful fish from Jean's Beans?? I used to get strictly fish. I would order a filet of haddock, and no fries. Just break the fish off in pieces with my fingers and dip it in tartar sauce. You couldn't get a better take out lunch anywhere. Yup! I remember that! Charles Chips was over there too, wasn't it? Never been there for a fry. Going to go this week though! Nope. Somebody probably answered this for you, but the place is closed with a FOR SALE sign on it.
