Where does a person get a good take-out fish fry around here? One that has a decent piece of fish, good cole slaw and not 10,000 french fries. Oh, and not real expensive. I've about given up. I used to just go to Stan's in Rome, but I don't really want to drive all the way to Rome from Marcy. Any ideas?

There are a couple good places in New Hartford (Laurey's and Charlie's on Rt. 5) but that's pretty far from Marcy too. Do you like Price Chopper's fried fish? I think it's as good as Stan's. But standing on line at Stan's on a Friday during Lent cannot be beat.

Casa Too Mucha has a great fish fry. I love their cajun fish fry. Not too many fries, but huge pieces of fish. There is Oscunizie (<-- spelling?) on bleecker street that has a killer fish fry and I believe it's $7.95. But Oscunizie gives a ton of fries. Kirby's on Commercial drive has pretty good fish fry. I went there last week.
I'll ask my dad about anything near the marcy area. He grew up there and if anyone knows where to get a good fish fry, it's my father.

frank, I used to get a chuckle out of people who would get annoyed when they would see the long line at Stan's on a friday during lent. Hey.....you're at Stan's, on a friday, during lent! There's gonna be a huge, beyond huge, line. It's part of the deal. Grap a newspaper, visit with your neighbors while you wait. Haha.
Thanks for the suggestions....keep em commin.

Anybody want to take a trip down memory lane?? Who remembers the wonderful fish from Jean's Beans?? I used to get strictly fish. I would order a filet of haddock, and no fries. Just break the fish off in pieces with my fingers and dip it in tartar sauce. You couldn't get a better take out lunch anywhere.
Now when we come home, we always make a trip to Frankfort for a fish fry at the Knight Spot on Main St. They give you a huge piece of Haddock that hangs off the plate, and fries and two sides. I usually get the home made macaroni and potato salad, and an order of slaw. I am not a french fry fan. It is only about 7 or 8 bucks, and worth the drive to Frankfort. You will come home with a takeout with the leftovers in it, for a fish sandwich the next day.
Shirley Scialdo's West End Seafood always had good fish on friday. I don't know if it is still there, or if they retired. Price Chopper in N. Utica had good haddock when we lived up there, and would fry it for you while you waited.
From where you live countrygal, it is a drive to wherever you go for takeout. You could go to the Holland Patent legion about as quick as you gould go to Rome or North Utica.
I would give most anything for a good fish fry down here in Tennessee. You never see haddock in a restaurant. It is tilapia, cod, or salmon. Lots of catfish too. I have taken to eating tilapia, and once in a while I fry catfish myself, but in a restaurant, they fry it until it is dried up and nasty.
Good luck countrygal. It is quicker for you to drive to Stan's than for me, haha!

Marcy Tavern is the only place my father could think of. He's getting old. Memory lapses and stuff.

Ahhhhh.......Jeans Beans!!!!
Fish, slaw and BEANS!!!! A wonderful thing! I remember my Mom taking me there to pick up dinner when I was younger. Don't remember the place being all that special, but I do remember the food.

I remember the one across from the old whitesboro high was a converted gas station. If I remember correctly, there was one near the uptown also, I am not sure. They did have great baked beans, and also salads that would compare today with those made by Holland Farms. My parents used to stop there and get salads to take camping and on picnics, along with beans, and Jeans potato chips.
I used to love french fries when I was a kid. We used to go to Neisners in whitesboro shopping center for ff's and a coke, or to Jeans beans, where they filled a good size paper bag for $.35. I also used to love the fries at N. Genessee diner on deerfield corners. I guess I burned out on them, because I seldom eat them any more.
Country gal, Franky used to make fish fries at 4 seasons pizza years back. I don't know if he still does. Also the Plaza in Oriskany, but I guess that burned down a long time ago. I don't know if the Seafarer in Whitesboro is still there either, but they used to do a good fishfry. I have been away too long, and I miss the NY fish fries. My tongue is hanging on my keyboard.

Franky's gotten a little carried away with his prices. When he started charging $9 for a large sub, I thought I'd better try someplace else. I know the price of cheese went up, but I don't think it went up THAT much.
It's funny you mentioned Neisners. I remember going there when I was little. They had one in North Rome and West Rome.
I think my best bet is getting fish from a fish market and doing the sides myself. I may try Marcy Tavern, but the last time I ordered from there they told me it would be 1 1/2 hour wait. Yikes! I could have caught the fish and fried it myself in that amount of time.
When I find a good one, I'll let ya'll know.

Whoa, with a 1 1/2 hour wait, the fish fry may be reasonable but the bar tab is gonna kill ya.

Not many fish fries down here. Not many Catholics so that traditional never really got off the ground. With more northerners moving down, though, I am seeing signs once in a while for fish fries, but they never use the right kind of fish!
You know what they have here that amuses me? Pinto Bean suppers! Who wants pinto beans for supper? And, who uses the word supper? It's breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not supper!

:)Pinto bean suppers? Pinto beans with a hamhock, and some raw onion and hot sauce. Mmmm! Slap a little butter on a slab of cornbread, and it is heavenly! It is one of those southern things that grew out of limited incomes. Lots of protein, feeds a lot of people, and doesn't cost much to prepare. If ya eat enough of it, ya need to buy a pair of bean eaters bib overalls though. They have a built in catalytic converter, lined with washable liners, to prevent burning a hole in the ozone layer with the noxious gases produced by too many pinto's. Like the two old southern ladies sitting in church one sunday. One said to the other, "I wish this preacher would hurry up and finish his sermon, my ass is falling asleep!" The other old southern gal repied, " I know, I just heard it snore!"

Kim, you have the same problem there, that we do here. No good fish fries. Haddock is almost unheard of. People here go out for fish at Long John Silvers and Captain D's. Yuk!

Clipper, driving through Watertown a few times I noticed they still have a Jean's Beans place there. Each time though it was late at night and they were closed so we never got the chance to see if they were as good as the one that use to be in South Utica. Watertown is about 78 miles from us, so it doesn't look like in the near future we'll be in that area, but isn't Denise in Watertown? Maybe she can give us a heads up on how good their place is there and if it's worth the drive to enjoy another great fish fry from the old Jean's Beans.

Countrygal, I may have found a good fish fry closer to home for you. Tonight, I drove by the Floyd fire hall and they were having a fish fry. I stopped in and enjoyed a wonderful treat. The fish was very well done.
