There is no excuse for the boys behavior and the fact that the family continues to try to come up with excuses for the behavior bothers me as much as the fact that two boys had the audacity to assault a police officer.
How is today's youth suppose to know right from wrong if the first lessons aren't taught at home?

I am angered as well by the lack of bystanders to at least try to intercede on the Officers behalf.
Watching people just drive on by without a care in the world is equally disturbing.

Considering where the incident took place I am not shocked at all.
These are the same people we attend a party with 50 or more people and someone gets shot but NO ONE knows or saw anything. Give me a break! These are the same people who will not assist the Police in any investigation of any crime and you expect them to help an Officer. Yet, these are the same people who will be the first to criticize the Police for whatever reasons they can come up with.
Pull all the Police out of their area and see where they will end up. Sounds like a great idea to me.

Bobbbiez - sounds like a great idea to me-LOL. They can all shoot, rob, ETC. each other and before we know it, maybe they can "clean up" this area quicker and cheaper than the Police have been able to.
And - it wouldn't cost the taxpapers anything!!!!

that was Bennie Rotundos philosophy and it seemed to work..He had his people patrol around cornhill to make sure the bs didnt spill out.

Well, corner, you know the old saying "If it's not broke, don't fix it". If this worked for Bennie Rotundo for all the years he was in charge, we should have continued with his philosophy when he retired.

The plea bargain from 7 down to 4 years makes some sense to me, considering the victim is okay with it too. After all, people serve less than 7 years for causing the death of someone. I'm going to believe that the victim, the DA and the judge saw something in this youth to cause all three to agree on the offer. I hope the boy takes full advantage of the opportunity he just received.

Thelma and corner, think about what you just said: If this worked for Bennie Rotundo for all the years he was in charge, we should have continued with his philosophy when he retired. Do you call what has been happening recently in Cornhill "worked?" How is it a success in any stretch of the imagination? We must fight crime by confronting it, not hiding in a cruiser 4 blocks away. There are good decent people like the Reverend Maria Seales who live and work every day in Cornhill and who deserve police protection. They don't deserve having to live in fear behind their closed curtains even during the day. Maybe some of those people who didn't help the officer as he struggled with his attackers were afraid to help? I can't find fault with them if I haven't walked a mile in their shoes. I respect your opinion, Thelma and I honor your service, corner. I respect your frustration with what is happening. I don't mean to single you two out. But I think the solution is going to require more thought than what I'm hearing here.

frank, do you really believe all involved saw something in this kid that they felt he deserved a break? I see it as they were trying to give the taxpayer a break on having to dish out for a trial. Yeah in my book by his action, in the future, I see a first, second and third time offender. If he doesn't respect the law or authority then he will respect nothing. Wouldn't want him or his family living next door to me.
Yes, there are some good people living in that area but even the good people never seem to see anything when there is an incident that takes place. It's time that those good people start to help themselves and help clean up their own area and that's by co-operating with the Police when something does happen. Without the good people's co-operation nothing is going to change.
In this beating of the Officer, you can't make me believe there wasn't a few "good" people who witnessed this and who just decided to stand around and watch. From what I watched in that video there were plenty of people just standing there and offered no assistance to the Officer. Something gravely wrong with that picture.

frank, please allow me to answer something else you stated. "They don't deserve to live in fear behind closed curtains even during the day."
frank, that is the problem. They have hid behind their curtains too long now and that is why things are now out of control.
I live in a neighborhood that is starting to be another Cornhill. I along with my "good" neighbors have kept an eye out for things that are happening in our neighborhood and we are co-operating with the Police on a daily basis to help rid our area of the scum who feel they can just move in and take over our "hood." I've lived in that area for 27 years now and I'm going to help fight anyone who thinks they can take it over without a damn good fight. Someone is going to move on and it's not going to be me!

I only know one person who lives or works in Cornhill. The Reverend Maria is working hard to take back the neighborhood, one person at a time. And someday, I believe, the flowers she plants will bear fruit. If anyone wants to help down there, I suggest she'd be a good place to start. You may be right -- this kid's die may have been cast the day he was born. But some people do turn their lives around. I don't think the DA cares about saving us money (why should he be any different than any other elected official? just kidding, it was just too easy). I think 4 years for what the kid did is fair, compared to other sentences I observe. If that's good enough for the victim, it's certainly good enough for me.

bobbbiez, I pray that you continue to fight to keep your neighborhood safe. I hope the bad guys don't ever cause you to fear so much that you stop the fight. All evil needs is for good people to do nothing.
You wrote: "They have hid behind their curtains too long now and that is why things are now out of control."
I'm not certain that's a cause, but it may be the result of too many years of the rest of the city not caring.

One of my best friends grew up on the corner of Dudley and James. After close to 40 years he just couldn't take it anymore and moved. He said it had just become too unsafe. I never felt safe while visiting him and always wanted him to open his front door before I'd get out of my car.
