I have question. What's up with wine?! Really...every single time I have wine, even if it's only a half glass, the next day I feel dried out and tired. This doesn't happen with beer. Does wine do that to anyone else? Maybe I have a small allergy to the sulfates or some other preservative that is in wine but not beer. I KNOW it's not caused by the quantity, because a half of glass isn't a lot!

I'm still waiting for my tastebuds to grow up so I will like wine. I only like wine coolers. Never have gotten a taste for actual wine. Even went on a Finger Lakes winery tour to try and find one I like, but no luck. My favorite drink (other than milk) is mudslides.
My mother has a hard time with the sulfates in wine so that could be it.

So ya like mudlslides huh, country gal? Did ya ever have a mudslide, at Casey's on the old river road in Floyd? There used to be a tall blonde bartender there from Prospect NY that made pitchers of mudslides, and all the happy hour crowd from Griffiss would imbibe. I used to stop with my crew, when I was a manager at the base, and buy them beers, and grab a coke and bag of pretzels. that place used to be "softball central" also, when the base was open. They had a team, and a lot of the local ball teams used to go there after games.

Mudslides! I haven't had a mudslide in years. Those are good! So are White Russians.

Kim, do you get the same reaction from both red and white wines?
Headaches and other reactions due to wine are common with some folks as you suspect due to allergies. If it's only with red, and not with white wines, the allergy could be to the tanins (tanic acid) from the grape skins. White wine is made from grapes that have had their skins removed immediately upon arrival at the winery. Red wines are allowed to ferment a while with the skins intact -- that's where the color comes from.
If it is the sulphates, present in all wines, then you'll just have to drink at least a half-gallon of wine whenever you drink. That way the hangover will be far worse than any allergic reaction and you won't even notice the allergy.

No Clipper I have never been in Casey's. I was a JJ's and Casabogie girl. They are both gone now. Casey's still has a softball team. My Dad used to play for Smith Post at Wright Hazelton every Thursday night until a couple of years ago. He's 64 now. He was a pretty darn good 3rd baseman even as an older player. Casey's was one of the teams he played. Hard to beat PBA now.
Casey's still gets pretty packed. I'm sure it will be on Sunday night. A lot of teams go to Korps Corner now on W. Dominick. Used to be the Rusty Nail I think when I was a kid. I know it was called something different when I used to go in there, but the name escapes me.

I lived down the street from the Rusty Nail when I first got married. My wife and I would go there for Happy Hour and nurse a couple of beers for an hour while we stuffed ourselves with peanuts, cheddar cheese and occasionally, the sliced roast beef Charlie would put up on the bar. Some days that would be our only meal.
Richie Evans taught me how to drive a race car on the Atari coin-operated racing game located by the front window. He was hell on wheels.
Ahhh, the life of a struggling college student. We were stone broke but life was good.

Hey, Frank...it's BOTH red and white. I think I'll just drink beer more than wine...problem solved! :-) Although I DO like wine while drinking it! Oh well, I like beer, too and it doesn't make me tired and dried out!
I had some cousins in Potsdam who owned a placed called The Rusty Nail.
When I was in college I spent time at Kelly O'Neils, The Top Spin, and Cavallo's. I remember being at Kelly O'Neils until 4 in the morning once, drinking Long Island Iced Teas and playing video games. I had a class at 8am. I actually WENT OT THE CLASS! It wasn't a good day. LOL!

A bottle of white, a bottle of red Perhaps a bottle of rosé instead We'll get a table near the street In our old familiar place You and I - face to face A bottle of red, a bottle of white It all depends upon your appetite I'll meet you any time you want In our Italian Restaurant.

OK. This is cool. I played softball for Casey's in the Rome league. Late 70's to the mid 80's. Hazleton Park. We won the league a couple of years. I still have my uniform. Kept it for a souvenir. I was #69 (minds out of the gutter - it is the year of my Cutlass convertible I had then and still do). Also spent more time and money than I should have there. Grew up around the corner. Also frequented JJ's and the Bogie....how about the Waterfront. Disco baby!!
I make wine (and beer) and have won amateur wine making contests through the state fair. Sulfite's are an issue for more people than even know it. You can buy sulfite free wine if you ask for it. Worth a try to see if it makes a difference. I hate to see anyone give up drinking wine. That's alcohol abuse!!
Small world.

I probably saw you play because I was always at my father's games. I think he'd be still playing if they didn't change his golf league to Thursday nights!

I will request sulfite free wine the next time and see what happens! Making beer and wine sounds like fun, but a lot of work! I have a friend who used to make mead.
