I'll ask since people remember old stuff here...anyone remember a candy store on the corner of Eagle and Kossouth back in the 50's? Obviously, I don't, but my mother's parents ran it and they lived in the apartment above it. Just curious!

Wish I could help you out Kim but I don't remember that one. Sorry. Back then it seemed every corner all over Utica had a little momma & papa's store and to us kids that was greatest because all had a big candy section and the candy was 1 cent to 5 cents. Big difference to todays price of candy. The two stores I do remember in W.Utica was Eddie's on the corner of Lenox Ave and Warren St and the one we kids called the Midgets on the corner of Lenox and Green St. The woman that owned the store had two sons who were midgets and always worked in the store. Nice family. There were many more all over the city. ;D "Those were the days my friend!"

Forgot to mention must who owned the stores lived in the building also. It was their homes. That was pretty neat because everyone knew each other as neighbors also. ;D

Kim, what was the name of your grandparents store? That might help. Their last names wouldn't be Gambino by any chance?

Don't know the name of the store, but I was wrong, anyway...it wasn't a candy store, it was a Mom and Pop type convenience store...they sold milk, bread AND candy! And their name was Martin. Ginny and Jim Martin. They didn't own the place, they just lived in the apartment above it and they ran the store. Before that they lived on Adriane Terrace, and after that they moved to where the medical buildings in New Hartford are now. There was actually a little house out there! My grandfather was a janitor with the Utica schools and my grandmother worked for Utica Mutual, I think. Actually, so did my father. And my mother. That's where my parents met.
ANYWAY...that's all I know about that! :-) Just wondering if anyone had been at that store at any point and may have seen my mom when she was a little kid. ;-)

I can picture the store you are talking about, but I was never inside of it. Belvedere's? I can't remember them being anywhere but where they were most recently in the newer building on Eagle, but it is not on a corner. Were they somewhere else before that? They must have been, because I remember their milk delivery trucks and I don't think there was a processing plant at the store where they are now was there? My memory is hazy, as the last time I spent any time in that neighborhood was in the early 70's when I rented a flat on Leeds St. Between Eagle and South.

It was across the street from Casaabs. I have no clue what the name of it was...my mother doesn't even remember the name! She does remember the guys that used to hang out there, though.

I did some plumbing work there preparing it for Barbara Klein's Election Headquarters. There was a restaurant across the street South West corner. Belvedere's is East of that corner on the South side. I believe they processed the milk there. I remember the trucks being parked on the right-hand side of the building. I haven't been there in awhile but will try and pay attention to what is there now.

At on onetime they had a small cafe & served food which was excellent.

The Northwest corner would be where the beauty salon, Jo-Mar's is currently. Across the street on the Southwest corner is the beauty salon, Hair East. Back when I was in college in the 80's, that building was a bar--The Seven Dwarfs.
Except for Belvedere's, I don't remember corner stores in that neighborhood; it would have been a hike for me from Taylor Ave! We frequented Mardany's on James & St. Vincent almost daily!

lilbump, make that three that hung out at Mardany's, but I'm sure I was there much earlier in years then both of you. In fact, I think the son, Eddie Mardany, passed away a few years ago. That was the reason I hung there in my teen years.
