I ran across these photos on Photobucket. I think this station is Utica's No. 12 at the very south end of Sunset Ave., where it turned toward Genesee St. Where is this station, No. 13? By the way, this station on Sunset and Shepherd Place, across from Murnane Field, was labeled No. 4. But I thought we called it "Four and Nine." Anyone remember? I know I'm getting away from my subject of tiny fire stations, but where is this one, labeled "No. 1"?

I didn't remember so I took a ride past it.
4 on the left - 9 on the right
The Station on Sunset is on the corner of Sunset and Woodlawn.
Sunset continues on the other side of the Railroad Tracks and gos to Richardson. (Ave, Street, Lane, Blvd...)

I'm pretty sure that the picture of Station # 13 is on Madison Avenue in the southern section of East Utica. (or Cornhill take your pick)

(or Cornhill take your pick) That would make sense, because I don't remember any other fire station over there until they built the one off Mowhawk near St. Agnes Cemetery. Too bad Microsoft's Birdseye and GoogleMap's StreetView haven't come west to Utica yet. They're pretty neat. OK on 4 & 9. Yes, "1 and 7" has a familiar ring.

YUP, station 13 was on Madison Ave. I believe thats where Old Engine 8 was. Station on Shephed Place says 4 and Nine cause Truck 4 and Engine 9 were stationed out of there. Station 1 is where 1 Engine used to be on Whitesboro and Cherry Street. Any other questions? LOL. I'm pretty good with the firehouses and can usually tell you from a traffic light picture where it is too HAHA

The limestone firehouse is over toward MVCC, maybe on Madison or in that area. It was replaced by the station off of Mohawk St at the end of Arthur St. Station 1 is the station on the highlands near the old St Lukes Hospital, across the street from Heintz funeral home. There also was a house in N Utica, just north of Deerfield corners on Trenton Ave, a station on Albany St. around Elizabeth St or so, a station out on Bleecker St near St Anthony's church, and another at Oneida Square. The last of the old stations was central, across from the court house on Elizabeth St. It was replaced by the new Central Station on Bleecker St.
At one time Utica only had one hook and ladder company and it was at central station. When MVCC and others started building multi story buildings such as their dorms, more ladder trucks were needed and stations had to be expanded beyond a simple engine company with a single pumper truck.

At one time Utica only had one hook and ladder company and it was at central station. Yup, my dad was the tillerman on the ladder truck for a number of years. The guy at the back who steers in the opposite direction. I didn't know Central (2) had been replaced. It was a pretty big building, with other city offices upstairs (as well as the firemans' quarters.) The back of the old UCA building on Burnett St. looked out on the the east side of of the Central building, a bit up the street. There was a guy who worked in one of the offices who parked his absolutely premo 1954 eggshell white Buick Roadmaster Convertible on Burnett St. I loved that car! 1951 Roadmaster

Neither Station 12 or 13 is in use anymore. I wondered about that. I think my dad told me when I was a kid that, although the fire stations looked like homes (to fit in with the neighborhoods), no firemen were ever stationed there. Instead, firemen in nearby stations were assigned to go there and get the trucks rolling when needed.

The old Central Fire station on Elizabeth St. is now the County Law Library. The New Central Station is on Bleeker St. between 2nd. & 3rd. Ave.

There also was an old station on Eagle at maybe Neilson Street??
Think that was old Engine 6 before that station at Oneida Square was built.
