What I don't tolerate well, is having someone come at me with attitude and talking to me like I'm a moron. (I'm just saying that in general, not directed at anyone on this forum)(anymore that is). I don't think anyone tolerates that. One of my law school friends was furious yesterday listening to a couple of 22 year old girls bragging about they "bitched out" some of their customers, for no particular reason. They bragged about how they then bitched out their supervisor when their supervisor tried to lecture them. That type of behavior should never be tolerated and it is increasingly rampant among my generation and younger.

Hmmm. Lots to ponder. Well, to begin, I don't think less of the younger generation's talents, nor their ability to be responsible and to work and be helpful. Not all of them, to be sure, but probably no less than in my generation (I'm 64). But as far as a respectful way of dealing with others... peers or elders... yes, I think that younger people are less so. Countrygal's mention of their being led by example strikes a chord. I was with my granddaughters (ages 6 and 3) in Albany today. It included a trip to Chuckie Cheese for lunch (why did they cancel purgatory just when I would have qualified for a plenary indulgence?) and playing the Disney channel while sitting around the TV munching popcorn in the afternoon. Their mom and dad are very careful about what they watch on TV and the programs for kids always stress respect for each other and elders. It's almost as though the producers know that mom and dad are watching. But when the kids reach adolescence and mom and dad start looking the other way, you wouldn't believe the absolute crap our kids are watching. The rap shit, the kiddie T&A (tits and ass) shows. It's really crud. Sex,violence and a whole lot of disrespect for just about everyone and everything. So, it's no wonder that the "younger generation" has lost a lot of respect. Even those of us who are older and can at least ACT somewhat mannerly in certain situations, have lost a good deal of respect for each other. Some of the things I've seen written to others on forums would have caused a man 50 years ago to challenge another to a fist fight. In that world, the offender would have had to put up his dukes on the street or in some gym. Win or lose, he would not have lightly insulted another person again.

This is how bad I am....I wouldn't let me kid watch SpongeBob because I thought he was horrible. I've since relented although he still makes me cringe sometimes. They find him silly and I guess he isn't too bad. I put my foot down with some of the others though - Suite Life, Drake and Josh, Zoey 101, Raven - to name a few. They are kid soap operas. Even some of the cartoons are crap. Thankfully my little guy likes Oswald, Max and Ruby, Little Bill, Bob the Builder, and Handy Manny. Have I hit a generation gap yet? TV is a huge influence on everyone no matter what the generation. I don't see it changing in the near future.

Yes, Bugs was great. Foghorn Leghorn used to crack me up. Wacky Racers.....I know that's a bit before you swimmy but they do show it on channel 174 sometimes. They have all the classics on like Huckleberry Hound, Underdog, Droopy Dog, Yogi Bear.

One of my volunteer activities involves meeting with high school seniors who have applied to my alma mater. I thoroughly enjoy my conversations with them as I hear about their dreams and hopes, their convictions and their interests. Why is it that we give up so much of that in exchange for wisdom as we age? At 18, everything is black or white. At 58, there are hundreds of shades of gray.
Communication is talking and listening. There are people of all ages that listen, and many who do not. Swimmy's supervisor was a listener. I work hard at trying to become one too.

bobbiez, I just read your post. Thank you for that insight. It's nice to know there are people who think well of me. Same holds true for you Countrygal. I saw all those cartoons on Nickelodeon before Nickelodeon became the crap station that it is today. Dave, part of the problem with adolescents tv programming is that they are eager to show the adults that they can be treated like adults. I find it deeply troubling to see shows for 12-15 yr olds having them grapple with "adult" concepts and issues, e.g. Gossip Girl. Society pushes adolescents to grow up to be adults so quickly; they lack the maturity, education, experience, guidance to grapple with adulthood. Maybe when I have children I'll think differently, but there should be no reason a 12 yr old should have a cell phone or blackberry. Nor should they be allowed on sites like facebook or myspace.

I used to do a great Yogi Bear impersonation. Made my college roommate literally fall out of his chair he laughed so hard.
