Nah, the real reason is that the majority of voters are against decriminalization. Ask your congressman. This is probably a much more conservative country than the media would have you believe.

even the liberals are more conservative than they would ever wish to admit.

They will be mores so as we slide toward the election and the liberals slide toward the center.

I'm not certain that supporting decriminalization of marijuana requires one to be liberal. Wouldn't it be a very strong conservative position to restrict the state's intrusion into what the people can or cannot put into their bodies? Conservatives of the time supported the repeal of prohibition. You might be surprised at the list of 12 states that have already decriminalized marijuana. See any familiar names there?

I don't disagree. I'm a conservative and I support decriminalizing drugs.
I replied before the link loaded. I did not realize NY was one of those states. That site did a great job of listing the infractions/crimes and their penalties.

They probably should lower the jail time and etc. for possession. But remember marijuana is a drug and it is a gateway drug (it really does lead to many people using other drugs). Also at a time when smoking is being restricted, because of second had smoke and such, I highly doubt that they are going to legalize a new form of "cigarette".

Marijuana is not a gateway drug any more than water is a gateway beverage and matches are a gateway instrument of arson...
The THC in marijuana does not have to be smoked, it can be injested cooked in food or drank brewed as a tea.

I don't advocate the legalization of marijuana. I believe access by children needs to be severely restricted and its use while driving a vehicle or operating heavy machinery needs to receive strong sanctions by government.
But any money government spends on investigation, arrest, adjudication and imprisonment of adult possession would be better left in my pockets.

A little over simplified. Water and matches aren't mood altering.

My grandma could always alter my mood with a little warm milk and sugar. I'd hate to think of her sitting in a prison cell.

"Water and matches aren't mood altering"
Actualy they are... Throw some water on the fire the arsonist just started with his matches and watch his mood change.
but your blaming a drug for being a drug that makes people do more drugs. and it just isnt true. ( your reason was "believe me")..
Believe me, everybody i grew up with, each and every one... sure we might have inhaled at some point... but it wasnt a spring board that boosted any of us up and on to the next thing. Except.. I feel into an addiction to marriage for a few years... but after rehab i survived and am all better...
If anything Cocaine is the gateway drug, it opens the door to a new kind of high and an instant craving that turns into an instant addiction.
The origional post spoke of HEMP, bet ya didnt know that HEMP can be grown from THC free plants... bottom line.. our arab friends do not want us growning it... Good Find Concerned, could be one of the reasons...
Dont even think about Medical Uses...
When my mother was dying of cancer, the pain medication they gave her caused all sorts of psychotic episodes... her not remembering who was sitting at the bed next to her, her seeing a "stranger" and lashing out, thinking she was in danger and screaming for help.. her accusing a nurse of hitting her, when in fact, there was a family member sitting right there that swore that never happened.... Instead of listening to her doctors who wrote the script for the WORST DRUG EVER RELEASED.... Percocet (oxycodone),
I could kick myself in the ass for not finding her some Marjuana to smoke or eat to help ease the pain and maybe make the last few days of her life more comfortable..

We had one of the top Drug Officers speak at a meeting for the Profesional Insurance Women Society a few years ago. His speech and slide pictures were absolutely fasinating and it left all of us realizing there was so much about drugs that we did not know or understand.
One of the things he mentioned is that cocaine is NOT PHYSICALLY ADDICTIVE. IT IS EMOTIONALLY ADDICTIVE BUT NOT PHYSICALLY ADDICTIVE like morphine, nicotine, etc. are.
We need to stress to our younger generation the importance of maintaining good values and the importance of obeying the rules of society instead of rebeling against them and committing criminal acts. By doing this, they will know exactly what it is to "feel good" about themselves and it does not have to be injected, smoked or inhaled, or come in a pill.

According to the link frankcor posted in the Bullshit Holidays thread, part of adolescence is rebelling against authority.

To me, the question isn't whether you get addicted or even if I get addicted. Seems to me the question is do we want society to limit the use of a drug with which obviously SOME people get addicted. And if we do, can we stiplulate the reasons crisply? There are no blacks and whites when it comes to running a society, convenient though that would be. I don't see this as a moral issue.
