Well to be honest, Chris, it's hard for me to believe anyone would seriously recommend going from XP to Windows 7. I don't know the guy who wrote that article, but I have Win7 on a laptop and absolutely and unreservedly hate it. Same in regards to Windows 8, which I upgraded to for a couple of months and then did a total hardware system reset to get rid of. But frankly, I'd rather deal with Win 8 than Win7, because Win 7 was basically warmed over Vista, a terrible system in my humble opinion. Win 8's main problem for me was the lack of updated drivers by device manufacturers who decided to wait for Windows 9, I think.
Still, I suppose if one were really worried about remaining on XP (so far, I'm not) Win 7 or Win 8 is the only place to go. Linux would not be a reasonable alternative for most users, as he points out. So there isn't much left. Which is why I'm staying on XP for the foreseeable future and using a good virus checker.

All our machines are running Windows 7, except for my IBM X40 which is still on XP. I've been researching to see if I can upgrade it to Windows 7, which I can, but will have to fork out about $100 for a Windows 7 32 bit OS. What to do, what to do? ?

Ralph, if you want to go to Windows 8 and they're still offering the deal, you can do it for $39 via a no-media download. I'm not sure when the deal was supposed to end.

I will keep xp on my PC. The PC is 11 years old but acts like a elderly dementia patient on life support. I have a laptop that runs Windows 7 but I am not sure about that OS. It seems to do strange things when I type like just now all of a sudden it scrolled to the top of the page and a little while ago it opened a new tab for no reason. I think it is possessed . I have to find my old ritual for exorcism and run that little devil into some pigs. Now where will I get some pigs.

I think in the PC world a Vista laptop would qualify as a pig. However a daemon with dementia presents special problems.

My X40 is still going strong and with the new SSD it is still one of the fastest PC's in the house.....faster than my wifes two year Lenovo was out of the box! Not ready for the bone yard yet but won't be able to handle Windows 8 either, way too many driver issues. I don't seem to have the problems with W7 that Dave does so I guess I will have to opt for that if I want to get away from XP. Though as Dave has done I will be continuing to run it on XP as it is not something I use every single day nor do I store anything on it that is worth robbing if there is a problem

There is probably nothing more wrong with Windows 7 than my simply being tired of the way it operates. The file manager rearranging files willy-nilly, the system telling me I can't get to system files I want, the drivers issue, the Word "startup" nonsense with it's constant ads, etc. I do not like my computer or its maker to treat me like a child. It's my g.d. computer, I paid for it and I want to use it my way. Other than that, there's noting particularly wrong with Windows 7.

I think the PC I buy will be with Windows Eight. I will be buying Microsoft Office so don't see a problem with that and then just buying new photo editing software. My Corel Photoshop won't work on the Windows 7 so probably not on win8 for sure. Since everything new I should not have problems running programs I hope. My old files should work on new programs.
My brother emailed me and told me don't worry about XP it will run forever. This from a software programmer.

Dave, it sounds like a lot, if not most all of the issues you are having are with the garbage left on the PC when it was purchased and not so much with the OS itself.
Granted that there a few system tweaks needed to get the security for the user into the same shape as XP started out, as well as the file handling, I don't have any more problems with it than I did with XP. And if you are getting ads for anything then you certainly need to have someone look at the system and scrub the garbage out of it.
I know when I first brought Betty's home from Best Buy it took me a few hours to get all the crap out of it! The other two PC's with 7 on it are all OEM System builder installs done by me and I have no problems with them. They talk nice with each other and share the network HD and printer without any squabbling amongst themselves.
I have found Windows 7 to be much more reliable on most tasks than XP was and every bit as stable. My only complaint is the enormous amount of RAM it takes to run it sufficiently, but for that I just add more.

Win 7 came with an Office suite called Windows Starter. It runs versions of Word, Xcel, ... which are feature limited (although sufficient for my needs). It also runs a sidebar with MS ads. I don't know if they can be disabled. On a netbook the sidebar takes up screen real estate which I would rather use for work. On a notebook it doesn't really bother me.

Thanks Ralph. I went through that process just in case it was wasting resources but these are ads that run inside Word Starter itself. I just checked, did a restart and they are still there. The Office Starter suite came on computers which were pre-loaded with Win 7. It replaced the Works package on earlier Windows versions. MS did that for only a couple years. Ad supported but free.

I heard on tv last night that MS will be offering a free download of Windows 8.1 which is purported to alleviate some of the problems with the original Win 8. It will be available on April 8th. I hope it makes some things easier and simpler to understand and accomplish. I did get used to Win 7 on my laptop and will probably get used to Win 8.1 eventually, lol.
