Just to add to the confusion, the one to come out next week is an update to 8.1. Win 8.1 was released a few months ago. I downloaded to Barb's machine. I didn't think it did much. She says it did quite a lot. She uses it, I don't so I'll defer to her opinion.
I too have read some good things about the upcoming update but as usual I'll wait a bit before installing it and let others find any problems.

Yes, I can see his point. Fewer people are buying new PC's, which I think is because of the impact the economy is having on consumers, plus there is nothing all that sexy and exciting from a function point of view in the purchase of a new PC. Not to me anyway. It's like replacing a car. I'll just drive until it needs repairs all the time or until I hit a certain mileage. Microsoft is telling people now on XP they won't fix what probably won't break. So they tell them hackers will gain on XP and you'll get stuck without all the defenses Windows provided so you would never get hit with a virus. Say what? Why are we all using virus checkers on top of all those Windows defenses? And I wonder how many people are thinking, "Make My Day. One more Windows debacle on my machine and I might just go to Linux."

I'm happy with the way XP works on my X40 and I have enough virus protection that updates on a daily basis ( sometimes more when it's hardlined) so I'm not going to worry about it. I use it when I'm out and about and there is nothing sensitive on it anyway. Anything of that nature I have on my flashdrive which is encrypted, so pffffftttttt to Microsoft!

I think the reason less PC's are being sold is because everyone has moved over to a tablet or use their iPhones/smartphones. Most peopele I think that have a computer don't know how to use one unless they are using it for email and shopping/surfing on line. A tablet can do all that and faster.
I still need a PC cause I use still use Programs and for my Photo/editing and such.

Chris, I don't think your usage is unusual. A tablet is a great device, easy to keep on hand for reading, checking emails or surfing. I'm secretary for one organization (and soon another). I can't imagine keeping minutes or doing correspondence on a fake keyboard.

I still use my XP on the other machine and have no problem I have even been getting updates. I did have one problem. One my PC, not this laptop, I use AVG for virus thingy. Well the other day it just would not load. I get this message that said this dill was missing. All of a sudden it was missing. WHat's up with that I said. So I went into my add/remove programs and under AVG was a thingy that said change. I clicked on that and after waiting 2 hours for it to find something up popped this page which had a repair AVG on it. I clicked on that and 2 hours later BAM my avg was working again and it even updated itself all by itself. That took about 2 and 1/2 hours. I was exhausted with all the waiting. I said to myself must be what fathers feel waiting for the wife to deliver.
