Hmmmm. I just deleted a new spammy post from a "guest" called "Huyjuy." I guess we can be glad that very few of them manage to get through and get posted, haha.

I saw that post. I figured it was a Martian spy reporting home. I was sort of honored he used the Busy Corner as a sort of an info mule.

Jon, who used to print these posters? I notice the styles are all quite similar, even down to the stars.

We did our own design work for The Original Chessmen Poster. A new concept using non-glossy hand bills printed in a large quantity that we would plaster telephone poles, restaurants and stores of new towns we were to play. Up until that time, one glossy photo was usually sent to a prospective club owner. He in turn might display it in a window or on an easel.
I cut off the bottom of the posters that had Gene and Marian Kipper's name and phone number. They were a long time agency that most area bands used through the years. Gene had the same person do the design work for the similar posters.

Jon, was the Dolphin the place halfway down the hill on the right on Burrstone Rd., as you went in to NY Mills? (I'm calling it "burrstone rd," because that's how it's labeled on google maps, but I think it was named otherwise years ago.)

The Dolphin was on the corner of Whitesboro and Main Streets in Yorkville previously known as Thomson's Hotel. Acreoss the street from where Tripp's was before it burned down.

Jon, you played with Gates, right? He was Jimmy Hanna's mentor at the music school and they were both taught by a guy I met and heard play, but can't remember his name. When Gates came back from Boston, we recorded a song. In the UFA auditorium! I think the "recording engineer" was a guy from WTLB. Were you in on that? Can't remember the year.
Also, where do I know DePalma from? Which band? Premiers?

Did any of you guys ever play with a drummer named Tom Acee? He was another local drummer that was really good.

Dave I did play with Gates. Funny that's how I happened to find CNYforum by searching for the obscure name of "Gates Intino". Not too many matches.
Perhaps Al Besette the Marine Recruiter taught them. Dick might know more about that. Al and I played for Dick's wedding at the Monarch. He taught at the Excelsior School of Music with the rest of the guys. Died back in '94. Truly wonderful guy.
Dave Van Pelt and Gates went to Berkley at the same time so I don't think it was him. That taught them.
Last time I saw Gates was down in NYC and he had me bring a guitar someone had made for him back to Utica. It sure did play nice. I seem to remember it was made out of what looked like wooden match sticks.
Pete Narkon recorded us at the Hotel Hamilton but that wasn't for the record. Pete was in the process of making a recording studio in the cellar of his house on Euclid Road so that's where it was recorded. Anyway it was a great recording. Stan Markowski was given the recording to press the record. It went to Bell Sound to make the master and when we got the records back Tony DeGiranimo put the records in all the Jukeboxes. The first play was at Maria's Pizza next to Charlie's on the Square. It was horrible! We were so embarrassed. What had happened? I think we were able to pull most of the records out of the jukeboxes before too many people heard them.
I bought the Ampex Tape Recorder from Pete later and found out that was the problem. The speed of the machine was off so that when the records were pressed they played back slow and made Gates sound like he was a Bass singer.

Clipper I did play with Tom Acey. The group was Jimmie Porter and the Electras. We either practiced at Tom's house or at UFA in the Little Auditorium. Sometimes we would play out on Tom's porch. We had a large following and would draw a pretty large crowd. Some one of the neighbors would usually call the cops after awhile and they would make us stop playing.
Mayor Dulan set us up to play at the Parkway Skating Rink several times and then a concert in Johnson Park. We had everything all set up with advertising and everything. When the time came the light had burned out in the park. Mayor Dulan came and he got Niagara Mohawk to send a truck and change the light right on the spot.
We sure had great fun with that band and played a lot. But didn't make much money.
After the band broke up I saw Tom play at 4 Acres but he only sang and didn't play the Drums.
