This is a question for anyone that knows anything about tv repair. I have a Magnavox 27 inch screen tv which works perfectly except for the fact that now it takes several tries with the remote or manual button on the tv to turn it on. Since nothing is wrong with the picture does anyone suggest I should try to repair or just wait till it does not work altogether to decide to go out to buy a new flat screen. Is it an easy repair or job not worth fixing. The first time it happened and I turned it on I lost all my channels that I had set up that recieved cable. I reset it but then when I turned it on again I lost them all. Other than that like I said perfect picture and it goes from channel to channel. Thanks in advance.

Chris, with the cost of a service call on anything these days in the $100 range, even a simple repair may not be worth it (assuming you can find a TV repairman.) And if it's a major repair, it's usually not worth the expense.
That said, your problem seems rather straightforward. I don't know where the channels are stored, but i suspect they are stored in the Remote device. Therefore the Remote may be your problem and you can buy a new remote just about anywhere (Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc.), although sometimes they are a pain to program so they will work with your TV. Not insurmountable, just a pain.
I randomly chose an owner's manual from the Internet for a Magnavox 27 inch color TV and under Trouble Shooting found the following:
Remote Does Not Work • Check the batteries. If necessary, replace them with AA Heavy Duty (Zinc Chloride) or Alkaline batteries.
Remote Does Not Work Continued • Clean the remote control and the remote control sensor window on the TV. • Check the TV power cord. Unplug the TV, wait 10 seconds, then reinsert the plug into the outlet and push the POWER button again. • Be sure the fuse is not blown on the AC power strip, if one is being used. • Check to be sure the TV outlet is not on a wall switch.
TV Displays Wrong Channel or No Channels Above 13 • Repeat channel selection. • Add the desired channel numbers (using the CHANNEL EDIT control) into the TV’s memory. • Check to be sure the TUNER MODES are set to the CABLE option and run the Auto Program feature to find all available channels.
I'd first clean the infrared window on the end of the remote you point at the TV. Then find the remote window on the TV and also clean it.
The manual I downloaded is for a Magnavox Model 27MS5402/17. It's a pdf and if you want it, send me an email.
Good luck.

You might want to try purchasing another remote. I recently bought a couple cheap ones at Walmart for under $10.00. They come with a manual and codes to program them for almost any TV.

Yup it sounds like the remote. My mother had the same problem with her TV which was the same as yours. It was the remote. I too bought a cheap one at Walmart with larger letters and found it very easy to get the new remote to work with the TV. Good Luck

Cheapest fix cost me 13.00 plus (guess prices went up even at Wally -mart) You guys are brilliant. I bought a remote today and that's exactly what I needed. No more trying several times with the remote power to make it catch before it went on. Now I have to try and find a remote that worked like my last one. This one is a universal RCA which is not that easy for me to code. (I can't see what is going on with everything they tell me to do. My old one was simple each button on the remote was pretty clear and did what it was supposed to do. I was able to go to my TV setup on my TV and delete the channels that did not have a channel on them. This one does not have that feature and if it does, I don't know how to get to it.)

I have to use two remotes with this blasted digital adapter I have to use just to get EWTN Channel 39. All the channels work perfectly without the adapter because I bought a TV that had a digital what ever ya call it inside. It is just because Time Warner won't re transmit EWTN in the Northeast. And they get EWTN signal for free. One remote changes the channels and the other increases and decreases the volume. When I have the remote for the air conditioner next to me while watching TV I get all confused.

Well my story continues. Since the new remote was driving me crazy I planned on returning it so put it back in its packaging and put batteries back in old remote. Now its working just fine. Isn't even catching where I have to enter "on" several times. Like new.....so how did that happen. (hope it behaves but in the meantime looking for same brand remote to replace old one ...just in case)

I've seen popping the batteries in & out work many times with remotes. They don't use much power & I've always assumed that the act of swiping the batteries across the contacts was enough to break through any films or oxides and make enough contact to operate for awhile. I've no idea what is standard gold plating thickness is on contacts these days. Before gold prices spiked around 1980 specs were always 50 microinches. Price pressure forced thinner plating and alloys with less gold and performance suffered. Both the battery contacts & the contacts under all the little buttons are suspect.
If it was a remote I used and could make work with a little fussing and occasional contact cleaning, I'd live with it. It it was one my wife used and complained about, I'd throw it away & get a new one.

Alan I stand corrected. On Yahoo TV Listings for my area Time Warner Cable it lists as Ch 43 but when i went there on tv to check it did not broadcast . So I just got off live chat with TWC and they told me it is on digital now. If I get an adapter which are free from TWC stores then I can get it on ch 43. Maybe you should check into it with Utica TWC.
BTW I could have sworn I saw it on my TV just recently. Maybe it was at my mom's they definitely have it but they use DirectTV over at the nursing home.

Back to the drawing board with my remote. I bought one before and it turned on the tv instantly but was hard to navagate and would not pull up my menu on my tv so I hunted one just like the one I had on eBay and back to square one today. It works the same as the one I replaced. Today it took me close to 1/2 hour to get it turned on. Since nothing was wrong with picture and operation once it was on I was determined to get that thing playing. (no tv..panic sets in. so I watched QVC on the internet live just to calm me down)
Before I go shopping for new tv I am going to give it one more shot with the remote I bought the first time and see what happens.

Chris. I went thru the EWTN thing with TWC. I was first told I had to use there digital tuner which is free until 2015 or maybe later than .99cents/month. So I said yes cause I really like certain proframs on EWTN and it brings me peace of mind. Well anyway they came to my apartment and installed it for me and that thing did not work. After an hour of technician's sending signals to me they figured out the digital tuner was only tuned to Pennsylvania. Lucky the tech man had another one in his truck. So he installed that one for me and after another hour of sending signals it finally worked. A few month ago I get a letter saying that TWC has now gone digital. I thought good I have a digital tuner in my TV so I figured I could get my line up of channels plus EWTN.. No No No--I still have to use the digital adapter on my digital TV because TWC will not rebroadcast EWTN to certain sections of the Northeast. I put a curse on them for doing that. So now in order to watch EWTN I will have to pay .99cents /month starting in 2015. Doesn't that just suck. I pray that St Michael the Archangel send his giant sword and cuts down EWTN's transmitters. And to think EWTN broadcasts free to all networks.

We are getting off subject Alan, but you can make that pizza frite yourself very easily and cheaply with frozen bread dough from the market. Kathy makes it now and then when she doesn't feel like making her own bread dough. She makes us fried dough and with the rest of the dough she makes it into balls and bakes rolls on a cookie sheet about the size of burger buns. Then we use the buns for sandwiches. To make fried dough she simply puts about 1/2 inch or so of oil or crisco in a skillet and puts the dough in to fry, turning it once. We then either put sugar and cinnamon or butter and syrup on it for breakfast. It's a very inexpensive treat. She is a true blessing to have as my soulmate. She doesn't consider kitchen tasks to be work. She absolutely loves cooking and baking and when she is bored you will find her in the kitchen with her nose in a cook book or making home made bread.

Chris... have you tried new batteries? Could be one of the current batteries is a 'bummer' and the resulting low voltage won't allow any remote to work properly.
