It did not surprise me to hear there was a large fight there on that particular corner. When I worked at the OD at night, I used to be required to go to the Rome office once in a while to resolve a "carrier issue". I would sometimes grab a bite to eat at the Denny's on James and the Blvd. It was truly an experience to see the cross section of humanity that goes there for late night breakfast. They often had a Rome police officer providing on-site security. With all the guns and drugs in today's world, I find it a shame that you have to be hesitant about going into an eating establishment during the night. There were times that the crowd outside, made me stop at Nice and Easy for a quick coffee to go instead. Rome IS no different than Utica, just smaller and less publicized in the OD. The drug dealers may be centered in Utica more than Rome, but they are still USED in Rome, and the same problems result that occur in Utica, just on a smaller scale. Sad but true.

According to NelsonRd, grammar mistakes are not solely the responsibility of the reporter, who makes $20,000. Like that's supposed to justify shitty journalism.
Be careful, if you post that on the disgrace forums, he might call you childish and unprofessional.

Yeah, what the "police said"! Hmmm! The quality of writing in that particular article, looked "kinda childish and unprofessional".

Police said police said. That's just bad editing or none at all, frankcor said.
Sounds like another bad night at the Stockyards, frankcor said.

Well they have a well developed drug infestation there, couldn't get a Weed & Seed site there if they didn't. It's just kept quieter then it has been in Utica.
I know Swimmy, some of it must fall to the Editor............who is no doubt sleeping on the job.

I think the reason it isn't heard as much is because the OD doesn't focus as much on Rome, only Utica. They're hellbent on making everyone know only the bad about utica and only the good about every place else.
too bad nelsonrd doesn't read these pages.

Consider for a moment that newspapers print the stuff people want to read about.

I have a theory and I've had prison guards agree with me and some don't........we have all this crime in the area because of the prisons. I believe that when these jerks are in prison up here their wonderful families follow them and their friends and so on and so on and then they all stay here even after said jerk gets released. Now I've had guards get pissed and tell me "no they don't" like I'm trying to take their jobs away or something. But I've had more of them tell me "yes, you're right". Yup, those prisons brought jobs to our area and that's a good thing, but look at what else came right along with em! And I believe it will only get worse. I have no idea how to fix it other than more police? But will that even work? It's sad what our area has sunk into crime wise.
I didn't read the article and I don't think I will after reading the "glowing" reports about it here. I'll just watch the news.

We will have to see how it all shakes out when the investigation is made public. It could have been over drugs, a girl, an altercation between two gangs, or just a bunch of kids with their beer muscles on , that got out of control.
Some of the shitbags you have to put up with to have a late night snack are disgusting. We often go to Perkins here in Bristol after bowling. Myself and my friend Robert have on more than one occasion squelched bullshit from drunks and kids in there, when they started getting rowdy or out of control. The 3rd shift staff is mostly young girls, and the manager at night is a middle aged woman. We are fixtures there 4 nights a week after bowling and they "reserve" a table for 8 every night that we bowl. They will seat nobody else at our table, in anticipation of our crowd coming in. LOL.
It is truly sad that a late night fracas has turned into a fatal tragedy for two individuals and will most likely be resulting in long prison terms for others.
What happened to the old days when someone's worst injury was a swollen nose requiring an ice bag, and a bandaid? We used to wake up with sore knuckles or a black eye, but WE WOKE UP! This shit of carrying pool balls in a sock, and 22caliber pistols and such is bullshit. If ya can't fight like a man, sit down and shut up.
Very sad turn of events for the families of those involved.

Actually, the story doesn't look too bad to me. It has a clipped, telegraph style and not much grace, but it presents the facts and quotes the sources in what seems a natural order. The dialog style may be due to complaints the newspaper has received about misquoting people, but I'm just speculating. All the "he said's" are for specific attribution and are not unusual. It is indeed not the style of the NY Times, however. I didn't note any grammar mistakes, but I'm certainly no expert.

I have to agree with Swimmy concerning the OD and always trying to put Utica down. The proof is in the pudding when the good is in a small article at the bottom of the page in small print, but yet "all" the bad news is on the front page with a hugh story in bold print. I see very little in their paper and in their Editorial columns promoting the good about Utica. If they weren't the only local paper in this area I wouldn't bother reading the OD.

IMO they are beooming desperate to hold on to their present subscription holders. I sent my renewal notice asking for $51.35 to continue my subscription back to them with a handwritten note to cancel my subscription. This was a few weeks ago.
Paper is still being delivered and today I received another notice asking for the renewal payment. I immediately sent it back to them marked in red "Second Request" - Please cancel my subscription; the OD is NOT worth $51.35!"

Interesting article, "Is The Print Newspaper Dead?" by Mark Morford of the San Francisco Chronicle, at: tinyurl.com/3cmoqw"While print papers may be an increasingly smaller niche media product, they're still a very respectable -- and profitable -- one, and they still tell an investigative story like no one else and they still cost less than a cup of coffee or a condom or an M-80, and hence they shall not disappear in your lifetime. And given how we're Americans, our own lifetime is the only one that matters." But I assume the author would admit some are done well and others are not.
