Bobbbiez I forgot to tell you Johnnie Phoenix told me he will try to get to the reunion this year,he has a wedding to do but might make it later.I lived right down the street from Carl when he died his whole apartment caught on fire.He lived in the brick building on Oneida and Hobart next to the old strippers bar.Carl and Johnnie both sang with us guys years ago.I sure hope Johnnie can make it we will see.Just thought you might want to know. Thanks Jay, that's good news. Being honest I was upset with him that he didn't show up last year. I'll forgive him if he does join y'all this year. Johnny and Carl were my very good friends throughout grade school at Kernan. I called them my body guards cause they always watched my back when I got in any battles. Yes, there were a few of them and they always made sure it remained one on one. I always felt they were the brothers I never had.

Hapanowicz has good hotdogs, but Hoffman's are the greatest. Isn't that what Voss's use? I remember back in our day BZ when they all advertised Durr's Franks from Barne's Ave. They made great hot dogs, but if you ever were in the plant you would never have eaten another hot dog as long as you live, haha. I used to deliver welding gas to their maintenance department back in the early 70's. They had rats in the cellar as big as little Phyllis, haha. Do you get Hap's regular hot dogs or those big ones they call "belly busters?"
What was the name of the drive in hot dog place that was where Holland Farms is now? They had great chili dogs in their day. (Durrs)

Clipper strange you talked about Durrs for awhile I worked at picking up the cow hides at that place. I would come home in the winter for working picking up hides and change my pants in the hall of my home because they were soaked in blood. Next morning they would be frozen stiff standing up on there own.I never eat any more Durr's after going in there plant small world.Hey Bobbbiez what ever you want to do is fine with me but we have to get those buns I love those bun they have for there dogs,we do not have the top open buns here. ok I'm a little weird but I like what I like....lol love Utica food

My family likes Happy's hot dogs and Hofmann's. Either are just as good as the other. For tomorrow's get-together here I bought Hofman's snappy grillers. Those are very good for a nice change but I will put Voss's chili out for everyone. Me, I can't eat any without chili from Voss's or the Patio. Love both equally. My family was a big fan of Durr's products, especially since my dad delivered for them. He had his loyalty to the company so that's what we ate most of the time. He also delivered for Honest John's so we always had the best of all foods. Funny story about Honest John's and our family doctor, Francini, who use to make home visit if you were too sick to go to his office and when I asked him how much I owed him, he said, "two of your Honest John's kielbasas." ;D

I won't even attempt to spell Honest John's last name, but I went to school with his nephew Bob that lived in Middleville NY. John's daughter was a beautiful little thing and on several occasions, she and her girlfriends came to Balch's tavern in Middleville to party and dance. I danced with her many times. She was very pretty, and I remember she always drove mom's big caddy.
Jay, those buns you speak of are called New England style, and I always loved them. Freihoffer's used to make them when I lived there. Patio used them too.
You talk about the smell of hides. I had many friends that worked in the tannery in Middleville years ago. There used to be a horrible smelling pile of rotting scrapings behind the tannery. I guess they simply scraped the remaining meat from the hides, and dumped it on a pile out there until it gathered up in sufficient quantity to be hauled away. That crap would smell up the whole village in summer.
BZ, is Honest John's still a family owned business and is it still in Little Falls? When I knew the daughter, it was in building on a side street in the West end of Little Falls.

you got the smell my friend and once you smell it,it will always stay with you even talking about it brings back the ugly hides and heads and bodies of cows falling thru the floor in to the holding bins down in the basement. That's where we picked up the parts, also had the sick cows locked up not to be used, the baby cows also there to be parted in another bin.We sent most of the hides we got to Middleville twice a week.got to be the same place what do you think?Yes those are the buns you can not get them here you ask and they look at you like your a dummy Southern living grits and hog balls LMAO rain last three days DVD to post office Monday promise

Don't know if they even exist anymore. When I talk to my uncle I'll ask him. He was friends with the family.

I know what you mean Jay. In all my travels over the years as a truck driver or when I traveled frequently in my civil service job, I never saw those hot dog rolls anywhere but New England. I have bought store baked rolls in Krogers and I split them on the top rather than slice them like to presliced rolls. I simply like the hot dog or sausage to sit nested in the top of the roll, not have the roll fall in two pieces when I try to eat it. When we have keilbasa or Italian sausage sandwiches we buy 6 inch hoagie rolls and split them on the top like that so they hold the onions or peppers better and don't fall apart.
Gee BZ, I hope Honest Johns is still in business for the families sake. It was a great little business and an outstanding product. They were always my first choice for keilbasa. Kathy likes Hap's keilbasa and I like Pulaski Meat Mkt's keilbasa, so we always have to buy a little of each when we pack the cooler to come home from up there. First we stop at sunset carbonic for dry ice, then Hap's and Pulaski, and finally at Chantry's for their store made Italian sausage and a 5lbs of Hoffmans franks with the natural casings. Geez. I am getting hungry and can't wait to be up there. PORK STEAKS ON BZ'S GRILL RULE by the way, lol!!!
