I had to give up the hippy culture when the flea shampoo made my scalp break out, and I had to cut my hair. Also, I ate so much meat that the table cloth would not fit around my fat a-s-s anymore. I was excommunicated when my hippy friends found a hank williams 8-track in my 4x4.
As for the funeral protest. I think it is a disgusting thing, that they have no more respect for the family than to picket a funeral. What a bunch of sick bastards.
Just a question! If God really was ticked off and was killing soldiers because of some gay issue, would he not be killing gays instead of soldiers?? These people are warped. Regardless of our view of the war, this boy died on a second tour in Iraq, because he obviously believed in what he was doing there, and wanted to return there when he recovered from his wounds suffered on his first tour.
Whether we support the war or not, you have to respect this brave soldier's loyalty and patriotism, and his dedication to a cause he obviously believed in. He is a hero, and deserves to be laid to rest without these morons marching in the vicinity.
Maybe the roads will be slippery that day, and someone will slide through the picket line with an SUV and dampen some of their misguided enthusiasm! thump thump, what was that??? LOL

I view a funeral as a sacred event involving family and respecting the decedent. It is not the time for squabbles or protests or what have you. If you want to picket or protest the war, fine, do it at a military base or in front of the White House, not in a funeral procession. There is a time and place for everything, at someone's funeral is not the time and place for that type of thing.

I'll tell you this much, people who cause problems at things like funerals and find themselves getting beat up, they have it coming to them and shouldn't be allowed to press charges. Protesters like these going to a family funeral, knowing full well people will be emotional deserve a bashing. And because those at the funeral are in an emotional state should be exonerated because of it.

If these bastards show up to protest, the family has a strong intentional infliction of emotional distress claim. Now that would make for an interesting situation. We'd make national headlines with that one. LOL!

Now I love the super soaker idea. Spray the dumbasses with water, make them into ice sculpture, load their ignorant, stiff, bodies onto a reefer trailer, and ship them back to Kansas.
Picketing a family funeral, has to be the most digusting thing I have ever heard of. It is a sick world we live in, when "religious" zealots like these are allowed a public forum to air their warped views. Police should be legally allowed to make them disperse or at least move their protest to a different location. I imagine it has to do with the lack of legislation in the local Waterville area, concerning the need for a permit or whatever.
Hopefully the snow banks and traffic conditions will make their presence a hazard and the cops can run them off.

Hopefully, they just won't show up. These people say they are going to be alot of places and never show up.
If they do show, I love the super-soaker idea!!

Man, I need to be able to get on this thing at work...I'm missing all the good stuff.
You guys went about 6 different directions with this one. I'll try to break it down piece by piece.
First Religion. You can either believe there is a God or not, or you can believe there are many Gods, but the reality is, it doesn't matter what you believe because there is only one right answer to the Question and I don't propose to know what that is.
I think if there truly is a God, he hates us for the most part and in a very general sense. If he truly did create this world, he has to be incredibly disappointed with what we've done to it and to each other.
If we're going the God route (and I can go both ways on this one, making me a believing non-believer) but assuming there is a God you have to separate him and religion. Religion in and of itself is a tool of man used to control the masses in the Name of God. And what a convenient way it is. If a king told the masses to do something, they may or may not, but when that directive comes from a "spooky God Character" (remember he was all fire and brimestone prior to the new testament) it made people much more docile. So know this God hates Religion, not some, All of them. Imagine if someone was going around all the time trying to speak for you and deceiving people in your name. It was the first documented case of Identity fraud.
The Bible, while having some solid basic moral principals, is a worthless book of parables. It is incomplete, written by man (who is fallable, the book even says so). If you need a book to tell you it's wrong to kill others than something is wrong. I have a real hard time with all the Biblical Hypocrites out there who practice Religion A la Carte. "Well I believe in this but not in that part." Sorry, it's all or nothing, your book even says so.
The book is filled with contradictions. Incest is a sin, yet Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Able, Cain killed Able and then he 'begat" a wife. Only woman around was mom so uh oh. Or it could have been a sister who wasn't acknowledged in the great book. Also Noah took two of everything on his ark yet only his family. There was a great flood. Well Noah and his family must have repopulated the earth. More incest. It tells to not be repetitious in prayer yet in every church I've ever been in the lord's prayer is recited. In the Catholic Church, repetitious prayer is used as a way to absolve you of your sins. Also (how convenient that the priests were made privy to all the seedy activity in the area) Can you say worlds best spies?
The book is two separate accounts. God is vengeful in the old testament, making people sacrifice their own families. Job was tourtured beyond that of any man to test his faith and then dear old Jesus came along. Supposedly live 33+ years without sinning all the while hanging out with the dregs of society. And oh how heroic his death to cleanse us of all our sins. How convenient for us. Made for a good Mel Gibson movie I guess. After that it's all love, peace, understanding, redemption, until you get to the book of revalations where literally ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE! What a fitting ending to the saga. Best close to any story of all time, even better than the end of Empire Strikes back.
What gets me most, is the people who seemingly call themselves christians, catholics, baptists, whatever and claim to follow this doctrine, very few if any have actually read the book they are supposed to live their ENTIRE lives by. Sure they know some of their favorite passages PSALMS 27 or John 3:16. Mine is from the book of John, I forget the number 16:19 or something like that "Greater love knows no one but this, that he would lay down his life for his friends" Sorry if I misquoted it, it's been awhile.
That leads me to the next point. People protesting this young man. My favorite biblical quote should tell them all that they are wrong. This many laid his life for his family, friends and this country. Most notably, THEM!. I'm not saying I wish these fools were on the top floor of the World Trade Center, but I wish these fools were on the top floor of the World Trade Center.
The reality is, if there is a God, he has one hell of a sense of humor. How else do you explain the Duckbilled Platypus?
Also, why is everything about God and Satan for that matter, so finite? If he really is God, doesn't he reserve the right to change his mind? Can't he just say, forget that, that didn't work, let's try something else? Conversely, couldn't satan, If there is a Satan, change his mind? Seems to me that if God is his enemy, that waging war against him isn't the way to beat him. If I were Satan, I would flip the script on God. I'd be great to my subjects, I get them to love me unconditionally, I'd recruit more people to my cause and I'd be a kind and loving ruler. If there is a hell, I think it is just "Heaven South" besides, that's where most of my dead family members are, according to the Bible so I think either way I'll be suffering for eternity, either with them in hell or without them in heaven.
But alas, that's not the point. Because in all probability, GOD DOES NOT EXIST. If he did, how did he come to be? Don't give the he's the alpha and the omega. That's just theological rhetoric used to make the question undebateable. If he is all powerful, could he create a stone so heavy that even he couldn't lift it? He is a convenient explanation for things that logic has yet to explain and may never explain. He is the perfect scapegoat for a ruthless leader and religious zealots to rally around to rally people to their cause. He is the perfect way for a Government to enforce compliance with it's laws.
Anyone else find it odd that Thou shalt not rape, was not included on the list of 10 things you absolutely cannot do, yet being interested in your neighbors wife, even if she happens to be Jessica Alba, is? George Carlin(comedian) does a good job of watering the ten commandments down to really just two.
God is the perfect ending for us to explain death. The thought of him and heaven make it easier for us to accept the reality that we will all die someday. A pill made easier to swallow when it's coated in the promise of a better place. Dog dies, tell the kids he's in heaven with great grandma and everyone gets warm and fuzzy and suddenly fells better. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for using this illusion to help us cope. Do whatever you need to, to get through that pain. But over time, at least be honest about it. Our loved ones aren't floating blissfully above us, watching us as the days go by. If we agree there is a heaven and if my grandma is lucky enough to be there, I'm sure she's smoking a pack of lucky strikes, drinking scotch and yelling at my Grandfather, who's probably sleeping with one of his seven virgin wives. (kidding). I'll bet she's got way better things to do, than watch my boring insignificant life.
I'm sure at this point, you're not feeling so great. A lot of harsh reality being tossed around but here's the good news. Each one of us, is still alive, we get to live. Kim's quote says it all. Embrace it, make it as full and as rich as possible. Our loved ones live on in the ways we choose to live our lives, in the cultures, customs and traditions that endure, that we pass on to the next generation. In our actions, morals and values that guide our lives. We have tremendous power to make differences in the lives of others. We have the ablity to think for ourselves and those of us in this country can choose for ourselves (for the most part). This young soldier was the epitome of that concept. He gave his life to improve ours. Sure it sounds better if we say he's in heaven, but I'm equally content thinking he lived a life (short as it may be) and made a significant difference and will live on through others. Perhaps his death inspires a young kid in waterville to join the armed forces. Perhaps it gives family members with a strained relationship a new perspective and appreciation for the shortness of life. Somehow some way, his living spirit will endure.
The reality, IMO (god I hate that) is that both Heaven and Hell are found here on earth and we are constantly moving between them in a constant search for how we want to be remembered. Moderation is the key to everything and thus you need a little heaven and a little hell to get by. Remember without Hell there can't be a heaven.
Okay enough about religion. ( I could go on for days and days and days about it) If anyone wants to, we can start a theological thread.
One disclaimer, much like what Kim said, I say all of that with the complete understanding that I could be completely wrong and I don't begrudge anyone for believing or thinking differently.
The next part dealt with Hippies. Personally, I like half of them. The free love ones who came to Woodstock 99 when I was working security in the Beer Garden and they would just walk around naked until a manage et tois sounded like a good idea, was great and I'm not afraid to say so. As to the tree hugging, hemp wearing, condesending, I don't shave my pits as a political statement, I can't stand them. I have no problem with vegetarians so long as they don't eat meat simply because they don't like it. Eating a plant is still killing something! Also have no soft spot for the bums who use their "hippiness" to do nothing with their lives. Again the true measure of a person is what they did to make life better for other people, whether it be your kids, your friends, strangers, whoever. Don't just sit on your couch, smoking pot and discussing the adverse effects of global warming and in what year the sun will go supernova.
Finally, these morons (I know I touched on them briefly) to come from Kansas to Waterville or anywhere for that matter to protest a funeral should come with it an automatic Death sentence. You supersoaker folks are a bit more forgiving than I am. If you know anything about me, by now, you know I hate DUMB people and think they should all die, unless they are truly mentally handicapped. To protest what is possibly the most intimate, sacred event that a person will ever have, is an afront to all of mankind. I would even be against this if they were protesting the funerals of those who blew themselves up in the name of Al Queda. It simply shouldn't be done. If we replace the supersoakers with Chainsaws and flame throwers, then I'm all for it. See how quickly the sheep flee when their fearless leader renounces his God while burning to death without arms and legs to flail. Sorry for the harshness but all I can think is if that was my son or daughter, I'd lose my G.D. mind and hell would haf no fury like mine.
And since I wrote an essay, I think it fitting to end it the way all good essays should end, with a quote. In Fact I'll leave you with Three.
-"That which is bitter to endure may be sweet to remember" -Thomas Fuller, 1732
-"Most of the trouble in this world is caused by people wanting to be important" -T.S. Eliot
and finally -"The years in your life are less important than the life in your years for the years teach us what the days never know" -Ralph Waldo Emerson

We could load the supersoakers with corosive acid then I'd be okay with it........
We should brandish their foreheads with a Giant "I" for Idiot, or a interlaced "RF" for religious freak....
just like the site for sex offenders, I think Idiots and religious freaks should have to register. in many cases they are just as dangerous as the sex offenders are.

I saw something about these people on the Armed Forces Network. I was actually sickened by it. They were glad the soldier had passed away. I've heard they've done some really disrespectful things at a soldiers funeral ie, burning the flag, singing songs about him dying, I don't know how true it is but I heard they even took the flag off of his coffin and threw it on the ground. To me that's the ultimate disrepect, not only to the soldier and his family but to United States. I say there is a difference between freedom of speech and plain stupidity, the Government needs to step in and stop this from happening. If you don't support the War or the soldiers involved talk to your representatives, don't sour the soldier memory.

I think if there truly is a God, he hates us for the most part and in a very general sense. If he truly did create this world, he has to be incredibly disappointed with what we've done to it and to each other. Matrix, man, the Matrix. The first version was a total utopia and people rejected the software. So the next version was today's version of the world. Just like the Adam and Eve story how they were in paradise. I agree about the yin and yang concept. Myself, I believe in God. I have not read the bible in its entirety, nor do I plan to. I just know that there is a God and that's good enough for me. I don't have to prove it to you, you have to find it for yourself. As for the super soaker idea, I was thinking liquid nitrogen to freeze them solid. Then take a sludge hammer...

Ohhh weeee Jduges! I loved reading what you wrote. I have no use for religion (ever watch Bill Mahr on HBO?). I grew up going to church on Sat. evening and Sunday. Most people I know that go to church are a bunch of hypocrites (not all, most). Like you said, I could go on for quite awhile about it. My opinion of the Bible is that is should be used as maybe a guide but not the "be all, end all" word! Stuff was left out of it, stuff was mistranslated and changed around. Kinda like that experiment where you whisper something to someone at the beginning of a line and by the time it gets to the last person it is all screwed up.
IMO Religion is the reason for all the hate in the world. People need to just live and let live. Who cares what people beleive or don't. It's not right or wrong. Religion is a way for people to control other people.
By the way....I loved the DaVinci Code. The book anyway. Didn't see the movie.
