Larry, this is one time I will disagree with you.
While I also think of all the reasons already stated, and agree with most, there is one offset that no one thinks about.
JTF’s brushed on it.
There already is a very enhanced LE presence down on Varick Street (and other spots I can’t mention) during open hours, especially during Saranac season. Not only OT for LE, but Fire Marshalls are regularly part of the contingent as well as Codes. I know……I feed these folks coffee until I close and they know if I am still there after closing there is still coffee for them till I leave.
While you may see an increase in the County coffers from this, I feel the offset in the increase of LE is going to counter that and then some. And this will reflect in the pockets of those in the City itself, hurting the very folks you have been trying to help.
We only have one DWI officer in the city, and poor George probably pulls almost as much overtime for paperwork as he does on the road, why make his job any tougher or his time more expensive?
I see lots of irresponsible folks in my place that wander down from Varick Street during the summer, and tons more as I am on my way home. The place looks like a zoo. I can only imagine if we let them stay till 4 am!!!

That was for Clipper ... ;D
Anyway, I think by improving the quality of life people will be more enticed to stay here/come here. Oneida County has a long way to go.

LARRY: The answer is NO , NO and NO again! This area should not even entertain such an idea. I will never vote for such a plan. will resolutly stand behind my NO!. I urge everyone to stop trying to be reasonable, stop trying to debate the issue, stop trying to rationalize, and JUST SAY NO. Write , call, blog, inform and just say no. This plan has NO SOCIAL REDEEMING VALUE. Shall I repeat myself at the risk of being redundant. NO SOCIAL REDEEMING VALUE. Larry, use your native intellegance to work with the system, not against it. I enjoy your posts and hope in the future to read something more positive. I am also not a religious fanatic, but how about keeping churches open till 4AM? (Just in case someone wants to pray all night)

I can't think of one good reason that anyone should need to be out at bar at 4 a.m.
True, it could be a good cash cow for any county because no doubt there would be a lot more DWI arrests, but morally I don't think it's ever a good idea to encourage drinking alcohol.

Isn't there some law that states bars have to be closed for a certain number of hours in a 24 hour period?

We have enough alcoholics in this city and county. Facts to support this? By allowing bars to open until 4am is going to require more police labor. There will have to be more DWI checks. Facts to support this are where? Have studies been done on the cities that allow bars to remain open until 4 a.m. versus their stats before the change? How can you claim this a fact without verifiable proof?! Whether people refuse to see it or not, alcohol ruins lives. We do not hold alcohol up to people's mouths but allowing bars to remain open until 4am is almost the same thing as putting a carrot in front of a donkey to make him run. If I want to ruin my life with alcohol, that should be my choice! I may only be 29, but alcohol has NOT ruined my life. In fact, my Friday happy hours with colleagues has only improved my ability to advocate for my clients. The other lawyers learn more about me and I them. We know when our clients need to settle or should take something to trial. The other attorneys are more likely to agree to a different settlement for their client knowing who I am and what damage I can do in court. To support something like this for monetary reasons is sick. If I am offending anyone then so be it but a fact is a fact no matter how much you try to pretend its not. You've posted no facts, just opinion posed as fact. Put up some facts and you won't have to worry about offending people. I'm most offended by your lack of facts.

Yes I am adding more.. I am infuriated. Does a college student need to be out until 4am? Whatever happened to going to college for what it is supposed to be about.. EDUCATION. Does a college student pick a college on the factor of bars in the area? News flash, college kids don't need bars to stay out until 4 am. It's called after-hours parties at the frats. Most college students are out passed 4 a.m. on a weekend night. I speak with personal experience on that one. Sorry to burst anyone's naivete. As for what happened to college being about education? Well, that dove tails into the other asinine law prohibiting kids under 21 from drinking. College students today spend their first three years rebelling against that law and the ever increasing constrictions they face as we try to tell them how not to live but surround them with everything saying differently. And you think allowing bars to stay open until 4 am is going to change anything? They don't need to be out until 4am, they should be in their dorm rooms sleeping or studying. Again, prudish behavior that has put us into this mess. Who the hell are you to tell me what I should be doing?! One set of parents is more than enough thank you very much! And news flash, the college kids will stay out until 4 am or longer regardless where they're allowed to go. See above! Last I knew, drinking 101 is not offered in any college in this community. There is no need to set up that course that lasts until 4am in bars. Last I knew, nor was being a prude 101 offered as a post-graduate field of study. But this course has been running things around here and look at us: decreasing tax base, decreasing youth population, increasing taxes, decreasing services, increasing corruption, decreasing morals and values. It's time for your puritan ways to step aside and let something else make an attempt. At the very least it will fail no more miserably than the puritan views have. Yes, that's very nice to know about the "evils" of alcohol. Perhaps we should eradicate Buffalo, Albany, New York City, and any other city that allows bars to remain open until 4 a.m. The reason being simple, they are clearly ignoring those studies and acting in immoral and impure ways. We should wipe them clean from the face of the earth for their sin, like God did with Sodom and Gomorrah.

One more thing (I can't believe I got up to make this point)~~College students, the group you said yourself you wanted to entice, are inherently broke. It comes with the territory. So those extra 2 hours are not going to allow the bar owners to make any sort of killing nor result in a great tax increase due to selling extra cheap beers. Larry, I wasn't putting you down when I mentioned the 2 Community Colleges you've attended. I'm sorry if it appeared that way. My point was to show you you didn't choose either based on the nightlife offered, but based on where you were living at the time, which is not what you're claiming. So far, you've gotten 4 nays on this board. Not that that means anything, I guess, but don't base too much on Facebook replies or bar owners either. Contrary to popular belief, some of us older folks have acquired (my God, I'm only 53!) some experience & wisdom. (Mind you, I said some.) What a nice segue from the other discussion about blue laws. Perhaps it was coincidental. lol. Maybe the opposition is not a bunch of prudes, but promoting such Puritan beliefs can't be classified any other way.

Has anyone considered the possibility that by keeping the bars open until 4, the drunks have time to sober up enough to make it to a cab the bartender called for? Or giving the patrons who are not drunk, but "buzzed" a chance to sober up and drive home? By keeping the bars open until 4, does that mean they will be serving until 4? What about the possibility that by keeping the bars open until 4 people would be more willing to go to later theatre shows or other events that go past 9.
As I stated in another post, people up at 4 are up at 4, whether it be at a bar or some frat house or another house party. Further, college students themselves may be poor, but their parents footing their college tuition are not, in many cases, and it's their money that would pay for the added drinks.

Touche, are we? Sorry, but have to totally agree with Just the Facts on this one. No one needs for the bars to be open till 4am. The way the DWI laws are today not very smart to encourage people to drink longer. If most people were responsible enough to know when they've "had enough" there might not be a problem, but working as a bartender most of my life, I found, most people aren't. Not to mention the fact, that with today's laws as they stand, it only takes a few for you to be DWI.

The point I'm trying to make is, only 1/4 of the very people Larry talks about attracting due to the extra 2 hours will actually be of legal age to drink! Using the logic Larry is using, why not lower the drinking age to 18 again & keep the bars open 24/7?
