It appears my OCR app is missin (ABBYY finereader 5.0 sprint) when Itry to use it. I keep getting this message: "an ocr application is provided for you on your CD in the OCR directory. Select OK to cancel this scan operation, install your OCR software and try your scan again" Well I inserted the disc but started to reinstall itself and the the OCR app still gives the same message and is not fixed. I called DELL and they said since my Printer is out of warranty that it will cost me 30.00 to have them fix it. I opted out and am trying to see if I can fix it on my own. Anyone have any takes on this issue. I don't want a trial version as that is only for 15 days and a temp solution. I want my OCR back. It's listed on my disc as part of the software so why doesn't it install. Should I have uninstalled the printer software first? I wasn;t sure about that being the case as I recently had to reinstall my whole hard drive and so printer was linstalled new and no ocr so I didn't think this was a resolution otherwise it would be there (so I think)

You very well may have to reinstall the whole mess, printer and OCR software. Take a look and make sure that they are listed in the add/remove section of your program list and uninstall them that way before reinstalling if you have to.
Many times when one has to re-format the HD there will be "relics" of old programs left behind. These can wreak havoc sometimes when trying to get the old software to work right.

Thanks Ralph....I found out how to install it . I right clicked on my CD (always forget that feature unless on line) Once there I was able to view all that is on the CD and there was the ABBY install launcher. Im ready to go. After spending hours on line and in Google and Dell support and Yahoo. It was my sister that asked me if I right clicked on the CD in Control panel after I inserted the disc. There was the OCR folder. He ha!!!! Just done and verified Big Smile

Cool Beans! I never even bother trying to install anything directly, but always go that route. It usually eliminates all the garbage that is dumped on the PC as well. Glad to hear you've got it back up and running.

It's a mouth full. ;D
It stands for "optical character recognition) It is an application in scanners that allows you to copy and edit text otherwise your scanner will take a photo and turn it into a .jpg file which you can't edit. That is what I needed to transfer the article I posted about the cell phone and tech types. I scanned it to Microsoft word and then copied it into the post on here.

Jeez Stoney. I am with you. 'My Optical Character Recognition System' is composed of two failing eyeballs and a pair of bifocals, hahaha.
Acrobats? Too old for that shit too, haha.
I think we are simply way too lacking in technical ability to even delve into that sort of stuff. I get email and post to the blogs. I read the news and play pokerstars. Good enough for me, haha.

Hell, I'd still play "Pong" if they had it.

I used to play pong for hours at the Moose Club in Marcy years ago. Now THAT shows a total lack of anything productive to occupy one's time does it not, hahaha.

Ah Clipper....I don't consider myself and old fart yet, but you know I am far from the 20 something computer geek!
It's not a matter of being "outdated", just maybe uninterested.
This stuff interests me insofar as I am curious, once I master the stuff I tend to forget about it. I have used TextBridge OCR and I have also used Adobe's OCR (yes Dave, it is a Cardiff/Tesseract engine, it was originally developed by HP and is still one of the number one OCR engines around. Now open sourced by Google)....which would amaze you Clipper. Adobe will also read a document back to me!!! Though Dragon does a much better job at that.
Modern technology is simply amazing.....for a bit. I have a Logitech VX Revolution mouse; cordless, laser and simply amazing! I can scroll through a 500-600 page document by just pushing the wheel....in seconds, highlight a word from any text anywhere and push a button and it will search that word and open a new tab in my browser for the results. I can flip from screen to screen, document to document, or window to window.
Damn thing has more functions than my toaster and my coffeemaker!
But I tired of it after a week....LOL!!! Too damn touchy for Photoshop work, I find an old scrolling ball mouse works better for pixel capture than this does!
Technology is amazing, you don't even need a keyboard after you install some of this stuff, just a mouse and a microphone. But after a while I always go back to K.I.S.S. Sometimes simple is best. Though I can't wait to delve into what Vista has to offer.
But I too would love to have that old Pong game set up!!! LOL!!!

I simply envy those that are younger and more savvy of the technical devices and programs that allow all the wonders of the computer to come to life for you all. I simply don't have the patience to master most of it I guess. I get frustrated and simply make myself nervous trying to master something that I totally do not understand. My understanding and background is limited to hydraulics, mechanics, and simple physics. I was never able to understand even the basic principals of a microchip or the wonders of computer technology. To state it in a very simple manner, I can write the specifications and determine the hydraulic requirements for a digger derrick truck for the communications industry, but I can't remove unused programs from my own desktop computer, without YOUR help, as you well know, LOLOL!

Don't feel bad Clipper. When I was planning on buying my first PC, my brother tried to talk me out of it saying why would you want to spend all that money for a dust collector. Good thing I ignore him. I've gotten more than my monies worth from it and he is a Systems Progammer. (and I learn something new everyday)
