Here is the Pong Game at the Strong Museum. ( hundreds of kids having a great time judging by the screaming and 2 adults moaning) I wonder if it's like that everyday. My sister was playing her favorite Pacman. I never got into gaming.

I'm missing my OCR software again. Hope these instructions work again cause I seem to have read on line that the Office 2003 OCR stuff disappeared with SP3 I'll let you know when I get done fiddling. (I must have forgot to reload a whole bunch of stuff with my last OS reinstall) Glad I remembered and found this post.
Update.....finally got it to install and it works (except some letter/numbers don't come out correctly...still I can copy and paste a document now instead of it turning into a jpg file.) Ex: 1/2 scans to V2 must be the eye can't read it correctly or that one is tilted and sitting on the slash so looks like a V
Okay I can go to bed now...good nite peoples ;D

Always glad to hear that nothing is ever perfect! LOL!!!
OCR usually doesn't do too awfully well with anything other than letters and whole numbers, if that is any consolation.

Jon Hynes and myself have tried to use OCR on the newspapers at fultonhistory.com with mixed results, bordering on the side of uselessness, in my opinion. And the individual sotware product didn't seem to make much of a difference because the TWAIN algorithm/method seems to be the base of any of the programs. Of course, fresh typewritten copy or print outs would bring a lot more success than scans of old newspapers. I'd do an OCR scan and ship Jon the output. He often did a manual transcription from that file, meaning that rather than re-type the entire newspaper article from scratch, he would take the OCR output file and correct it. Understand the OCR output had LOTS of errors. Me, I found it easier to simply re-type the article, but Jon had a knack for correcting copy and found that easier for him. He spent many hours and hours at this activity, but the happy result is an unheralded body of old newspaper articles about Utica on both this forum and on the morestories.proboards.com forum relating to Post St., the Olbiston and Genesee Flats and many other aspects of Utica and Mohawk Valley history. www.windsweptpress.com/images/psb utica.jpg[/img]

With old newspapers, and other such aged paper, it is best to scan it in B&B as a jpeg and then use a photo program to correct it. Reprint it and then scan it with OCR.

Absolutely. I usually use Irfanview to bring out the contrast, etc. I always wanted to see what a more sophisticated graphics program like Gimp (and certainly photoshop) might be able to do with edge filters or something. One of these days I'll run a newspaper image through Gimp and see. But most of the problem with old newspapers are fragmented images of the letter characters. And I don't know how to replace fragments, or even if it can be done with with a photo program.

With a good scan @ 300dpi they can be rebuilt with ease in Photoshop.
With a good scan I can remove the zit off a pimple.....
.....and then make the whole thing disappear!

Photoshop! You're making me jealous, Ralph. Of course, if I could afford it, I'd then have to spend the rest of my life learning to use it. An art teacher told me she went to a 4 week full time course one summer for Photoshop. But someone told me if I learned everything in Gimp, I would have learned MOST of Photoshop, although the quality is not the same. Is that true?

I don’t know a thing about GIMP Dave, but I know that Photoshop is the industry standard that all others are measured by. Most PC reviews are done using Photoshop as a base (as well as other programs) reference.
Learning it is NOT easy, it is constantly evolving. I have gotten as far as CS2, and that in itself is amazing.
Chris, if you ever want a copy of CS2 just PM me you address and I can send you one.....you as well Dave.
