Dollars and Doctors Not There for Small HospitalBy MASON C. TAYLORYou have to be a member of the "over 30" generation to remember well the old Utica General Hospital at the corner of Eagle and Mohawk Sts. where the Mohawk St. shopping center is now located. Primarily it is a charity hospital. It had only 93 beds, 22 of them for chronic cases. But it also had an obstetrical department, a surgery, and most importantly, an emergency room. It was staffed, on a volunteer basis, by some of the most elite among Utica physicians, Most of the time, it had one or two interns or resident physicians, whose duties, among other things, included handling the emergency cases that came in the back door after the staff doctors had departed. Its presence gave a sense of security to residents of East Utica, especially the poor. It also served the purposes of politicians, who could get their friends admitted for free hospital care and even major surgery without cost. * * * In the summer of 1955 or 56 I was bitten by a dog while riding my bike and my father took me to Utica's General Hospital for a tetanus shot. Why he took me there I don't know. Growing up a few blocks north in East Utica he would have been familiar with the place. The next time he took me to an emergency room in '57 or '58 we went to Faxton, but that was probably because he first called our doctor who told him he would meet us at Faxton.

I think I sort of vaguley recall this building. What's there now? Historical Park apts? what a waste and what an ugly building Historical Park Apts is. Adds nothing to the neighborhood!

Historical Apartments it was. Not too many improvements made on Rutger Street in my opinion.

Wow, the clock went to a company in South Carolina. I sure would love to find out where. I would be tempted to look it up if it has been put in use somewhere if it isn't too far from here. Who knows, it may be just sitting in a barn or antique shop somewhere. There are antique shops and flea markets all over the place here in the Southeast. It would make for a great overnight adventure. Hook up the travel trailer, spend a day or two leisurely traveling to SC, taking pictures of the old clock, and camping somewhere overnight. Sounds like a great ""road trip" to me. I may call the number listed in the article and see if the guy is still alive and if he remembers who exactly he sold the clock to. It would be fun to track it down and find out what happened to that old clock.

I will give it a try Fiona. I will be fairly busy on Sunday, as the election for the board of directors for the Bristol Bowling Association is tomorrow. I am up for re-election and you know how that goes. Us REDNECKS have to keep our priorities straight ya know. Bowling ahead of culture, history, and preservation. Seriously. I WILL check it out at my first opportunity. It would be a neat thing, if we were able to track the clock down and at least find out what has happened to it and where it is.

Would be nice if it were for sale cheap, but if the buyer was willing to truck all that distance, he might want a fortune.

I imagine that you are right Dave, but I am going to try and contact the guy Tuesday and find out who he sold it to. I doubt that it will ever see Utica NY again, but I may go see it somewhere else if it has been put back into use somewhere.
I was thinking last night, that if it was not bought for it's antique value, but for its clock works, it may have been disassembled and the "works" put to use to drive a totally new and different clock somewhere. It will be interesting to attempt to locate it and find out.
Tomorrow we are off to Winston Salem NC for the day, to see a doctor at Wake Forest University Hospital who may be able to repair Kathy's back problems. Say a prayer for her. She is in constant pain and the nerve problems that result from her last surgery cause unbearable charlie horses in her calf due to a pinched nerve. Gonna be a long day, down and back, a couple of hours of sitting in the hospital waiting to see the doc, and running further tests. I suspect we won't be home until late tomorrow night.

Armory on the Corner of Steuben and Rutger Streets When I see the picture, I always think I remember it from the 1950's. On the southeast corner. Here is the building (or its predecessor) on the 1881 map. Funny it's not labeled. Either it's a previous building or military installations were not marked for security reasons. (?) The outline on the map seems to roughly map to the building's shape.

We're pulling for her.
