Golden, no sweetie, I am not known as the residency queen or do I want to be. I am just a Utican that is very involved in her area and is willing to do whatever I have to do to help keep things right in my area. "Reporting" any wrong doings to the proper authorities usually corrects a problem and I am not afraid to make enemies by doing just that. The efforts can only help to improve the area I live in. Try it. It works!!!!!! ;D

Well, I would imagine that provisions have been made to enforce it. I can only hope that the mayors powers to skirt the law and appoint non residents with waivers is limited under the new law.

I thought I read in the TOS that more than 4 consecutive on-topic posts would constitute grounds for de-listing.

That's right Clarence. If a thread lasts more than 4 posts without going off topic, it is in violation of the TOS. Too many on topic posts make it harder for Ralph to flush them should we get off topic. LOL
I guess it has become kinda like a characteristic of the forum to wander quite often. I personally don't see any harm in it, and if someone wants to take the thread back to the subject at hand, all they have to do is make a post that addresses the original issue. No harm done.
On a couple of occasions, lightening up the discussion and wandering a little, has allowed the discussion to cool, and then be gotten back to without having to lock the thread.
Sometimes a thread degrades to a point where it is only a couple of people are discussing the issue and no productive conversation is resulting, and it is getting heated or they are simply sniping at each other. I can either lighten it up, delete a post or two, lock the thread, or let it go until we have to warn someone about being civil and not attacking an individual. I prefer to lighten it up and take it off topic, rather than to end up with the other alternatives.
That is not what happened with Bobbbiez and I and the hot dog discussion though. We simply wandered away just like we used to do on the od forums. Heck, give me a good hot dog, and I don't care where the cops live, LOL.

It has become a moot point since the vote, any city employee (with the exception of PD and FD) will be grandfathered in. And good luck on the enforcement issue, we have a Councilperson that resides outside of Utica and he’s still here!
While I believe that residency has its merits, or did when the city was in better shape than it is now. With housing stock the way it is; school taxes, City taxes, garbage user fees, etc, etc………I can’t blame anyone for not wanting to live in the city.
And I won’t argue that the majority of UPD resides in the city, but I know of many officers that reside outside of the city limits.
Despite that there will be the enforcement issue, actually proving that the employee-to-be resides in the city, making sure they move when employed, etc. The law as it pertains to the UPD has been there not just for years, but for decades!!!! And even our Chief’s resided outside of the city.
If it's any consolation, in the past 8-10 years “Thou shalt not kill” hasn’t been having much luck around here either.

If it's any consolation, in the past 8-10 years “Thou shalt not kill” hasn’t been having much luck around here either. .... also because it's not enforced. By that I mean REALLY enforced, eye for an eye style. While it may be argued that capital punishment doesn't immediately reduce the murder rate, it certainly removes some dangerous people from our midst. But I'm not for capital punishment at the moment. When we can devise methods to determine guilt beyond even the merest shadow of a doubt, I would again support it. How's THAT for going off topic! Back on topic, seems to me the residency argument was all the news back when I was in high school in the late 1950's. That's half a century ago. Has the "Residency Argument" become a permanent fixture of Utica, like road construction did at the Thruway and route 12? ( Back in the 1960's, someone suggested the Bishop consecrate the construction site as a cemetery, because of the number of Mafia bodies dumped there.)

Golden, If you take a poll 95% of the Utica officers actually DO reside in UTICA... And in the past they did use others addresses.. However now that the CITIZENS have spoken, I know Dave will have this enforced... If the officers want to keep their job they will obide... end of story I take pride in my city. I live in a great part of Utica, I am sick of everyone saying their kids will get bullied.. Honestly the scum that is arrested usually are not from here so I dont think that is a valid discussion... And we are not asking these officers to reside in CORNHILL.. there are many great parts of Utica...

I would like to see documentation of the 95%. The majority may live there, but to just throw out a number without documentation sounds a little overstated. I know of several that don't live in the city, and if it weren't for grandfathering they would be out of work due to this antiquated and hard to enforce law.
The number living in the city might even be greater than 95%, but I would want to see the actual numbers before I would believe it.

Is the residency requirement only a Utica thing (like tomato pie)? I know we don't have such a clause for Watertown City police. As far as police living in your neighborhood, I was under the impression that they did not wear their uniforms to and from work. At least that gives them a little anonymity; people tend to look a lot different in civilian clothes than in their uniform!
On a side note, I must say that, wow, it is so much better since I turned off "images"--all the emoticons were maddening!
