Kimster, If neither you nor Ralph can get the picture uploaded, maybe I'm just a figment of your imagination and don't really exist. Imagine talking to Mom and saying, "I was chatting with Kit the other day and..." and she says, "Who???" Don't worry about the squished URL. I'll grow a new one in time. In fact, I think I see a 'bud' starting now.
Dave, My transition to digital was about 2 years ago. I was a real holdout. So many years with film and now it seems to be a thing of the past with all but the most serious collector. But to tell you the truth, barring the cheapies, with a decent camera, digital is the only ballgame. And just what I've saved on Excedrin since retouching on a computer screen rather than using needle-sharp leads through 2 powerful magnifying glasses has almost paid for the camera. (Not really, but you get the picture) WREM at the time I worked there was located upstairs in the Firehouse in downtown "Remsen City" and the transmitter was in a pasture up on a hill somewhere. It was in a shack and although I never saw it I had to take and log 1/2 hour meter readings which were located in the studio. One thing I remember is having the Saturday shift. We had to be sure not have an open mic at 12:00 Noon because that's when the fire whistle test went off. It was right over our heads on the other side of an un-insulated roof. Needless to say, we had to hold our ears quite a bit. The studio was fairly nice but as soon as you opened the door to go downstairs to leave, you had to step over the pigs and chickens and watch out for the doodoo, and around the fire truck (notice that's in the singular), sneeze a couple of times and out the door. Whew! What a place. (And don't even THINK about going to the bathroom. If you really had to go, you put on a 30 minute tape, locked the door, and ran over to the Remsen Diner real quick. Maybe cop a burger to go while you're there) WREM was fun. I can't tell you the whole story about WRUN in Utica though. Someone would definitely get in trouble for that. - Kit

Uh... um... Kim... am I really that wide? What can I do to the image to make it look right? And how did you get it up there? And how can I do it? And why is the world round? And why are most politicians crooked? And why is our money being used in Iraq when we so desparately need it here? And why does McDonalds have Golden Arches, And why can't I vote for Big Bird if I want to? And who the hell does Bush think he is - Savior of the World? And what suddenly pushed my buttons to get me going? And why is it that Kim can do it every time? Huh? (PS. Thanks for trying, Kim. We'll get this thing straightened out.)

She must have used some of the steroids that she had left over from when they treated the "tent". I am concerned about URL thing though! You are my uncle's age, and most likely only a couple of years older than I. Do I have to seriously worry about my "URL" too, while I watch the rest of my body deteriorate, and develop age related maladies?? Does it hurt when your URL starts to shrivel? Can it be fixed with Levitra? If you "sprout" a new bud and it grows into a full fledged URL, will it be as good as the old one? Will Centrum Silver slow the process? Inquiring minds want to know, seeing as how there are many many members of our age group that are members here at the corner. It could be disasterous if we all lost our URL's at the same time, LOL!! PS: I have only two possible reasons for the "broader" pic she posted. It may be that it only requires a disclaimer that states "this picture has been modified to fit your screen", or that you simply have been squashed down from tall and slender to a little shorter and more broad in the beam, by carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders for those 60 something years. LOL. When I broke my back I got 1 inch shorter when it healed, and when I quit smoking, I became MUCH wider, haha.

Hahahaha! That's priceless! I did hear that happen (or begin to) on WBCQ one evening. They're the shortwave station up in Maine that's about as close to "shack in the swamp" radio as I've heard lately. At SU's radio station, we had carpet bugs in one studios' wall carpeting and a cart machine you had to bang on sometimes to get working, which meant you hit the mic's cough switch as you whacked the cart!! I did rip&read there in the the summer of '73.

I remember going to a radio station years back with Joe Ustravenus that looked as you described WREM. It was called WADR. Is that the same station, different era?

Dave I'll bet if anyone had taken a picture of WBVM at certain times you could see the bottom of the tower standing in water.

WADR: "Where's That Station?" ( www.dobe.com/ ) shows a WADR on 1480 in Remsen. A kilowatt peanut whistle, as are most in that part of the band. WBVM: Blessed Virgin Mary and Danny Fusco! Right? His first studio reportedly in his bedroom and then in the building next to King Cole on Genesee St. in south Utica. Can't find them in the FCC data base at: www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/amq.htmlJon, a transmitter site in a swamp can be good for propagation, when it isn't flooded. Where was BVM's antenna?

Danny Fusco was the founder of 1550 WBVM (whose calls stood for "Blessed Virgin Mary") in Utica back in 1961 and ran it 1961-1978.
Danny returned to radio in 1984 as morning host at 1550 known as WUTQ. He died in 1998.

BVM's antenna was off Oriskany Boulevard kind of in back of where Midas Muffler was across the R R Tracks next to the old Party Packing Slaughter House.

Jon, do you remember Danny's two sons' names? One was Mike, I think. There's a Richard Fusco on the air here at WDST in Woodstock (or used to be.) He pronounces it to rhyme with Trustco, as does everyone else in the world. Danny used a long u, as in Fyou-sco.

Clipper, Like your uncle Jim and I, it hurts like crazy when we’re having trouble with our URL. Perhaps you’ll be one of the lucky ones and it won’t bother you. And yes, severe shriveling is definitely a problem. Sometimes it can be straightened out, if you know what I mean, but expect the maladies. You know what they say. “Maladies happen!” I think I have the coffee mug, t-shirt and bumper sticker around here somewhere.
Kim’s ‘broader’ picture says much more than 1000 words. First she toys with my emotions, then my sense of reason, and now my photo. And I’m left looking squat like the photo. Sheesh!
I like a good ‘shack in the swamp.’ One held together by spit, bubble gum and bailing wire. And you get a shock now and then. Nothing serious, though. Just enough to knock you on your sit-down. And the critters in the carpet? Why not? We all need a little snack now and then, and the protein is good for you.
Stoney, Yes, WREM and WADR is the same place although I think WADR is now in a different location. I worked there the summer of 1960. But just for 1 season and then I couldn’t take Ed Sluzarcsyk’s discreteless diversions any more (God rest his soul).
Jon, I agree. I look a little squat right now, but am healing up fairly well. Actually, I’m a lot better looking than the photo shows. Just ask Kim. The girls line up just to rip my clothes off and ask for an autograph. Then they stand back and laugh like crazy and point a lot. Silly girls. But you’re right. People don’t generally look like they sound, or vice versa. You know what I hate? I hate it when a younger person is breaking into radio or TV and they talk faster than I can listen. With some radio background I often hear them talk so fast that they skip over syllables that I (as an older and more decrepit person) really need to hear in order for it to make sense. And hiring professional people just because they have a speech impediment... there’s big bucks in talking funny.
Dave, Peanut whistle just about sums up WREM/WADR. And WBVM... Hoo Wah! I remember it well. Danny's nephew Mike (Mickey) Fusco was a dispatcher for the Sheriff and did some work with WBVM. Great voice. Danny wanted a REAL studio (although he did just fine with his bedroom remote) and made arrangements for it to be at the Hotel Hamilton. Danny, Mike and I went over there and put the whole thing together including the brand new “Gates” console. Quite a nice studio. Sadly the Hotel Hamilton had to be taken down sometime after that. Probably Urban Renewal or something. I’d lost touch with WBVM or WUTQ and just listened and talked to Danny in the morning.

WADR: "Where's That Station? That was my question if it is the same as WREM in a different era. It was or is in Remsen upstairs. 1480 AM
