When I woke up I could hear water running somewhere. I went to use the bathroom and it was flooded and when Kathy went to get out of bed the carpet in her room was sopping wet.
It turns out that the supply line under the bathroom sink had burst sometime during the night and flooded the bathroom and bedroom. We have three closets in the bathroom that I built and put louvered folding doors on when I built the bathroom. All three closets had at least a 1/4 inch of water and everything stored on the floor is soaked. Thank goodness when I put down the old laminate floor in the kitchen I installed a threshold across the bathroom doorway and it was high enough to actually keep the water from flooding the kitchen floor too.
We are waiting for the water damage restoration company to show up and begin the cleanup. It is a huge mess.
My wallet is crying already. We have a $1000 deductible on our homeowner's insurance. OUCH!

Damage was more extensive than I thought. It DID involve the kitchen laminate floor. The guys has a moisture meter that shows that it got under the laminate about 4 feet or so out into the kitchen. They have had to tear out the vanity, tear up the flooring, and peel back the carpet in the bedroom. The restoration company says we will be living with fans and dehumidifiers for two or three days, then a line of subcontractors. A flooring installer, a cabinet installer, a carpet guy to re-stretch the carpet when it dries and the floor has been repaired and dried.
We haven't decided yet as to whether we will go to a hotel or not. I may sleep on couch and let Kathy have the bed in my room, or we could sleep in the motorhome, but why sleep out there if the insurance will cover a hotel room?

It's always worse then what you think. I'd be worried about mold growth under the carpet, even if it dries. With a $1000 deductible I'd want the insurer to replact it. Just my $.02. I'm not too sure about a hotel with contractors traipsing around, but I'd drop in & check on them that's for sure. I hope your place is back to normal soon.

If we DID go to a hotel it would only be to sleep and I would be back here before the contractors came to work. While the kitchen is tore up we will probably cook breakfast in the motorhome and go out for dinner or get take-out every night. As long as I have access to a coffee pot early in the morning I am fine. I will probably be able to get to the Keurig ok. I am not too worried about mold. The carpet is relatively new and Kathy doesn't want to replace it. The restoration folks have chemicals to treat the carpet to prevent it, and they will be sealing the plywood underlayment where it doesn't need to be replaced. They are using commercial dehumidifiers that heat the room to 100 degrees and there are multiple special fans made for drying floors running in each of the two rooms. When I had my business I did smoke and water damage remediation and never had a call-back for mold using similar equipment to what this company is using. There are 1/2 inch plastic drain tubes that run from the machine to the bathroom shower, pumping the water that is removed from the air straight to the shower drain.

Did you find out why the water line grenaded? Just curious.

Did you find out why the water line grenaded? Just curious. Didn't find our what caused the supply line to burst. They were the braided flexible lines and it burst where it attached to the fitting on the end attached to the shut off valve. No obvious reasons for the line bursting, but they were 22 yrs old. I will be insuring that the plumber that installs the new one's in the new vanity uses supply tubes from a reputable plumbing supply and not off the rack at Lowes. I hope this process moves along in and expeditious manner. I am not fond of shaving at the kitchen sink with a 6 inch counter-top mirror and brushing my teeth in the kitchen. Having my razor, shaving mug, and our tooth brushes on the kitchen counter is a pain in the buttocks

How is the clean up going? The guy just left. He came by to check the progress with his moisture reading instrument. He predicts that the bedroom carpet will be completely dry by Monday and they can put the bedroom back together again. As for the bathroom, he figures at least a couple days after that before it will be dry enough to begin the restoration process. On Monday they will finish removing the rest of the glue left by the old tile and will remove some of the kitchen laminate so that the adjuster can see the damage. The water has infiltrated under the laminate for about 2 or 3 feet out into the kitchen and the threshold has raised up. The instrument that the restoration guy uses reads the moisture level is interesting. It reads moisture right through the laminate flooring and the first thing he did when he arrived yesterday morning was take readings in all the areas and document them so that the insurance adjuster could see them and would not be able to dispute extent of the damage. The entire situation is just a very frustrating inconvenience. We can't get to the shower until they have removed the rest of the glue residue. I got some on my shoe last night when I stepped into the bathroom to check things out. My shoe stuck to the floor and I had to clean the bottom of it with Goo Gone. Glad it wasn't my bare foot, and I wasn't attempting to shower. How embarrassing would it be if Kathy had to call 911 for them to come and rescue me. Fat, naked, and glued securely to the floor half way between the door and the shower. LOL

You can't make this stuff up. OMG!! Also, be careful of the smells and your little dog walking on and or being exposed to the fumes. I made a big mistake when I had a new tile floor put into the kitchen and I didn't lock my cat in an upstairs room. The outgassing was what finally got her. She developed a cough, then had a seizure and I had to have her put down.

After living for weeks with the house upside down and no bathroom sink or vanity the flooring is being replaced today. They will be here around noon with Luan plywood underlayment and two men to lay the floor and install the new vanity. The next order of business will be to get the plumber in here to reconnect the plumbing and install the new sink on top of the vanity. With a little bit of luck, by early next week I will be able look into the mirror in the bathroom again, admiring my handsome face while scraping away the whiskers.
