I would like to do another history thread: As it seems that everyone posts here, this is my question: What would anyone like to know about? Here are some of the choices that I have info on: Utica: history of Rutger Park focusing on the Conkling House with pictures, Erie Canal history focus on building the canal in Utica, (pictures) or photos of the Olbiston taken by myself in 2015, with a focus of the outer architecture, photos and cards of vintage stores in downtown Utica, Parks and places. These are just ideas, I have a lot of information, but perhaps someone else can jump in on this. Thanks. That sounds like a great idea. I think anything to do with Utica & the surrounding area's glory days would be of interest to all. I hope your latest bout with this virus is a short one.

OK. too all of those that cheered me on and thought that this was a good idea, much thanks. This is just an idea I am positing. I think if it will go well, won't ever be as fancy as Dave's work, because he had a computer set up for that, but hey' I can give it a try. Dave, John and I all worked together as a team. I am a one legged stool now, but let's see what I can come up with on my own.

Barb & I got our test results back, both positive. Two weeks quarantine for us. I hope all goes well for the two of you while in quarantine. This is the second time for testing positive isn't it. That is interesting since I figured if a person tests positive some antibodies have to be present to make the test positive so we can become infected with this more than once. Interesting I think. I wonder how that rolls out in terms of receiving a vaccine and how long immunity will last. I wish they would have actually tested that before rolling out the vaccine . I have my doubts. Maybe the vaccine is being given knowing it will at least give a false hope to people. Now to worry about this new dominate mutation that is out there infecting at a very rapid path and will the current vaccine be effective. The first test was negative. I think that is how it will be for awhile, a negative test last week doesn't prevent a positive next week. The next challenge will be to determine how much immunity is conferred by having the disease and recovering.

We never can get too much history. Sadly much of recent history is being eliminated from text books and historic buildings are being bulldozed every day. The entire CNY area is rife with history. What we experience today will be part of history for those that read about it in the future. I for one am grateful to Fiona, Dave, and Jon Hynes for the work that they put into the history of the Olbiston and Genesee Flats. My heart aches seeing the fate of that architecturally unique and formerly very beautiful building facing such a bleak future. Personally I watched them build the Teamster building and thought it to be an assault and incursion on the historic integrity and beauty of Rutger Park. Should anyone ever propose tearing any of the old mansions down the should be drawn and quartered. Enough of the city's old buildings and long time businesses are being demolished for the hospital project. Let's leave the pristine areas that are left to be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Artsy do something on what the politics etc was like during the Vietnam War period in Utica. I was not here then and was not aware of anything from 1966 to around 1980. Large grounds to cover. What was Mayor Dullen history.
Hey how about the old cemeteries around the city. Forest Hill is an interesting place.

Anything which you find of interest would be good. BHU, I think you missed most of Dave's postings here. He was the heart of this forum during early years. If you have a chance, sample them. Sometime early on he and I decided that every post needed a sound track. It became sort of a game finding a song to match the post. Sometimes it went the other way, I once had a song booked marked for 3 weeks before I found a post for it.

Pizzaballa: I am sorry, but I cannot do anything on the Vietnam War. It is not my area of interest or expertise. I may try to do something on Mayor Frank Dulan, but I can't promise that either.

Other than the normal anti-war demonstrations I don't recall anything notable occurring in the city concerning the war other than the fact that the city suffered the loss of brave soldiers, sailors, and marines, just as so many cities and towns did. I guess I would have to say "there is nothing to see here" when it comes to any notable and newsworthy events spawned by the Vietnam war other than the sad loss of brave military members lost in combat. May they all rest in peace. UTICA: PFC GREGORY CHESTER BIELICKI LCPL EDWARD MARK BRADY PFC ROBERT EDWARD BUTLER SP4 STANLEY GEORGE DENISOWSKI PFC JOHN ARTHUR FELSHAW PFC JAMES JACOBS COL JOHN MICHAEL JENNINGS CPL LAWRENCE MARTIN JENNINGS PFC THOMAS GEORGE JONES SP4 RICHARD WALTER KULPA PVT ERNEST JAMES LA GRAY MAJ JOHN JACOB LAWENDOWSKI SGT JOSEPH JOHN POSTIGLIONE SP4 VAN LA SALLE RANDOLPH Jr PFC FRANCIS WILLIAM RUCH II PFC LOUIS ARTHUR WUEST Jr PFC ALLAN T YOUNGKRANS Jr SSGT JOSEPH STANLEY ZAWTOCKI Jr This is only the losses recorded for those from Utica. So many other brave men and women from around the CNY area died. Among them was my very best high school friend Gary Hartman from Newport. He was killed while I was in Vietnam and I could not even attend his funeral. May he rest in peace. His mom was one of two Gold Star Mothers that rode in the parade every memorial day in Newport, along with one other lady who's son was killed in WWII. www.virtualwall.org/istate/istatny.htm Scroll down that list and you can see a horrific history left behind for so many NY State families. The history of the Vietnam war is a subject that many of us would rather leave in the past rather than to rehash. Just saying. 58,267 names are on a memorial wall in Washington DC. That is the most noteable historic fact that we all need to remember about the Vietnam war.

Thank you Clipper. I feel the same way. If anyone here feels they want to research the Vietnam War (Pizzaballa?) they are free to do so, correct? Unfortunatly, it won't be me.

What was Mayor Dullen history. Dulan was mayor in the early, mid sixties. He was mayor during Utica's urban renewal days which some believe was a total disaster due to poor planning, corruprion, etc. Domonick Assaro succeded him as mayor. Not sure if Assaro beat him in an election or if Dulan retired. That's about all I know about Dulan.
