Thanks for all the info PB. I certainly hope that I am able to regain the senses in a matter of days or weeks. Life will be very boring if I can't enjoy a good meal for an extended period. Everyone I know that has exhibited the symptoms have been able to regain their taste and smell within a couple of weeks for the most part.

I never lost my sense of taste or smell. My posts still stink and I know it.

For Clipper and Kathy: Ed Kain's Famous Triangle Coffee Shop Delux Ham Salad Sandwiches: If anyone from Utica is here and remembers Ed Kain's triangle Coffee Shop on Genesee Street in Utica, here is a holiday recipe for you. I worked there after school in 1966 -67 as an all around waitress, dishwasher and sometimes fry cook and though old Ed is no longer among us, his memory lives on. Having all this leftover ham I have tried to recreate the recipe here. So...here we go: I don't have a photo because I don't have a camera that syncs to my laptop, but I think everyone knows what a ham salad looks like. The ingrediants are fairly simple and found in any standard pantry:
You will need a food processor or ingrediants can be chopped by hand.
1. Leftover cooked ham as much as you have. 2. 2 hard boiled eggs 3. 1 large white onion 4. 3 kinds of pickles: sweet, gherkins and dill 5.celery if you like it. I don't like it, so I did not include it. 6. Mayonnaise. 7. a dash of hot sauce, a sprinkling of red pepper flakes, salt and black pepper to taste, a large tsp of white sugar, red paprika
chop the ham, pickles and onion in the food processor, chop the eggs in a separate bowl. Next make the "sauce". Blend together the mayo, hot sauce, red pepper flakes, salt and pep, white sugar and paprika in a large bowl. Stir in the chopped pickles, eggs, onion and ham. Mix this all together. Then season again to taste. I like lot's of paprika. To really allow the flavors to blend, this salad has to be refrigerated for several hours. Serve on a toasted kaiser roll or thick slices of white bread to which a heavy schmear of mayo has been applied. Enjoy!!

Thanks artsyone. I was just out to the store and picked up a small jar of gherkins. Kathy is going to make the ham salad this afternoon and put it in the fridge to cool. Today's menu is spaghetti and Italian sausage. She started the sauce at about 9 this morning. She makes awesome spaghetti sauce, but both of us are just beginning to be able to taste so eating it for dinner may be more of going through the motions than of truly savoring it.

I heard the Triangle eatery is under new management. Whole different crowd of people from what an elderly guy I see on the Bus now and then told me. He says he stopped going there now.

Great!! Please let me know how it comes out and what you do or don't add to it for flavor. Kathy made it up while I was out working in my woodshop. We are having the spaghetti for supper, but I will let ya know when I try it tomorrow for lunch. It looks very good and I just took a fork and sampled it a little while ago. It was good.

I was at Walmart one day and this lady at the deli asked to have one pound thinly shaved ham on the bone. She was making Ham Salad from what I heard her tell the deli carver clerk. I like the deviled ham that one can buy in a can. Very tasty with crackers or flat bread with a pickle.

Deviled ham, potted meat, and vienna sausages aren't my cup of tea. Nope. I will stick with real ham salad. I have a friend here that eats two cans of potted meat or deviled ham with crackers every night while he is watching tv. He also snacks on canned smoked oysters. I guess I am just a fussy eater.

Deviled ham, potted meat and vienna sausages are disgusting. They are all fat, the useless fat from the pig before it gets rendered into oil for dog or cat food. Would anyone eat dog or cat food sandwiches? (Well, some people might) You can make your own deviled ham simply by grinding the meat smaller and adding different condiments. Ugh.

Artsyone, We had the ham salad for lunch. It was wonderful. She made it with gherkins, dills, and her home made bread and butter pickles. She used a dash of hot sauce, but she isn't crazy about crushed red pepper so she left that out. It was in the fridge overnight and all the flavors blended well.
I used to eat occasionally at the Triangle when I worked at Jeffery Hardware just before I entered the navy. I don't recall ever having the ham salad though. I will be eating it made with that recipe every time we have left over ham going forward. It is delicious. Thanks for posting the recipe.

Well I guess you have never munched on dog biscuits while watching a good movie. Healthier than potato chips. I do love black bean chips.

I really haven't had any deviled ham since I think my University days. I don't like potted meat or vienna sausages either but smoked oysters are excellent loaded with fantastic nutrients. Dr. Oz highly recommends them.

No ,Pizzaballa, I never have munched on dog biscuits while watching a movie, nor will I. I have never munched on a dog biscuit while watching a movie, but I DID once taste a dog treat that I had purchased for our pup. It was a peanut butter treat that I purchased at a local pet bakery called "The Barkery." Their treats and biscuits are made with regular ingredients the same as would be used to make treats for human consumption. The flours, the flavorings, and the peanut butter are purchased in bulk from a bakery supply. Other than being rather hard and lacking in sweetness it was quite similar to a peanut butter cookie one might by in a supermarket. They also make birthday cakes and cup cakes formulated specifically for pooches. Although their treats might be fit for human consumption I will stick with Oreos or Kathy's home made chocolate chip cookies. I was looking for a link to a local pet bakery in the Utica area when I found this mail order link. petbakery.com/Looks like an opportunity to broaden your snack horizons PB. I bet that the liver brownies are to die for, and the gluten free fish strips could be saved for Friday's and lenten snacks. Toss those Milk Bones and order up some gourmet treats. LOL
