Israel Attack on Iran 'Unavoidable': Olmert Deputy Friday, June 6, 2008 8:17 AM tinyurl.com/5mf6qqAn Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear sites looks "unavoidable" given the apparent failure of sanctions to deny Tehran technology with bomb-making potential, one of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's deputies said on Friday. "If Iran continues with its program for developing nuclear weapons, we will attack it. The sanctions are ineffective," Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz told the mass-circulation Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper. "Attacking Iran, in order to stop its nuclear plans, will be unavoidable," said the former army chief who has also been defense minister. MORE at: tinyurl.com/5mf6qq

Iran would look good at the bottom of 3 feet of green glass. Take the leash off and let the Israelis run a little. The exersize will do them good.

Better them than us for a change.

Better them than us for a change. I think that's what I was trying to get at in another thread when someone asked why we "are always helping Israel?"

Better them than us for a change. Given time it will be us- the moment Iran is attacked they will take the straight- and if we want to keep oil prices down we will have to move in with our Navy and take it back. It will be interesting though as we have not had a major Naval Battle in a long time.

Time to let our attack subs do what they were designed to do. Thier navy wouldn't know what hit 'em. With 2 CV's in the neighborhood and another being deployed I think the straits are controllable. No sand to hide in on the water.

NOBODY has either the air power or the Naval power that the United States has. Nobody is going to come to the aid of Iran with a major naval force capable of matching our power. Let Israel pound their nuclear sites, and we can definitely control the straits and the gulf if necessary.
The secret would be to simply "maintain" traffic through the area, and not try to "control" or dictate direction of the oil moving through the area. A simple blockade of Iranian goods, coming to and leaving from their ports, and the short burst of whatever weaponry necessary to destroy their limited naval power, is all it would take to manage the waters of the area.
I simply hope we don't get into the ground fighting designed specifically to "unseat" another dictator. The people of Iran will eventually do that themselves. History has proven that to be true.

Clipper:
I tend to agree we have no primary plan for land forces, only a defensive posture.
I have believed all along the plan has been for Israel to make the necessary crippling strikes to Iran and I don't mean just the Nuke sights. They are the best at it as proven in Iraq and, recently, Syria. The subs will be the backup, if required. Our main duty will be to protect the shipping lanes and our ships in the area from the French missiles Iran is known to have.
Iran will then have the opportunity to become a member of the rest of the world.

What naval battle? What subs? We can pinpoint a goat cart from Colorado and launch missiles from Miami. We did it in Iraq and elswhere. Was it Miami? Or Gitmo?

I know, I know, I know Dave, but you learn as a Vet to make sure everyone thinks their service is involved.

That would be nice. Like in a 1942 movie starring someone like Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne. Everyone gets drunk the night before shipping out. Romances are begun, some ended, songs sung, patriotism polished up and next morning they all embark, amazingly bright-eyed, like an Odyssey across the ocean to the enemy's shore. Upon arrival they find out they don't have to fight because a couple of technicians at NORAD's Colorado Cyber Command Center, who last year were flipping burgers in Milwakuee, have flicked two switches, obliterated a nation and won the war. Neat!

It would be interesting to see how the country would handle invasion talks for Iran.

This country would freak. The liberal press would blow an artery the size of the parkway as soon as the CURRENT administration brought it up. But wait.........if a demo gets in, then wait. They'll have to prove they are just as macho as the guy they've been desparaging all these years, but they don't have the capacity (see-guts) to see it through.
