The original Star Bakery is still on Catherine St, but Anita opened the second on Main St in Whitesboro quite awhile ago. It does extremely well there. I know I'm there quite often. ;D Everything is just as good as you remember.

How close to Malone were you? Were there any "glasier" hot dogs in Constable markets? They are bright red like the old Pilgrim Franks, except they are delicious. They are made in a meat market in malone and are available in 10lb bags. They were only good on the grill. If you boiled them, you had pink hot dogs and red water, haha!

Was it Catherine? I thought it was Jay st. I have been to the one in Whitesboro too. My neighbor was diabetic, and I used to get him dietetic italian cookies at Christmas, on a big tray from the East Utica Star Bakery.

I'm pretty sure it's on Catherine St. Yeah, Glaciers are made in a factory in Malone. That's all I heard about when I first moved there and couldn't wait to try them since I am a big hot dog fan. ;D Well, I did and was very disappointed in them. Didn't taste what everyone in that area bragged about. They aren't even close to Happy's or Pulaski's. Actually, the old Pilgrim franks were better in taste and fatter. Glaciers are quite thin after you cook them. Plus, the Glaciers are quite expensive for a hot dog and in my opinion not worth the price. Must be people in the Malone area are loyal to their area, because it's all they have and don't have anything good to compare with.

Years ago I had neighbor who was from Malone. He made a chili like sauce to put on his glasiers that he called "michigan sauce". They were out of this world done that way. I agree that they don't compare to Hap's dogs, or Pulaski's.
I used to like the pilgrims on the grill, but that was the only way they tasted good to me. I can't imagine what went into them for the price you paid for a 2 or 3 pound package. Probably balls, buttholes and bellybuttons, haha!
You are right about Catherine street. I remember now, bearing off of Oriskany St. and following Catherine past Mt. Carmel.

I use to like the Pilgrim hot dogs. Sh*t, for the price they were pretty good on the grill, especially with five kids to feed. Clipper, remember when Durrs was on Wurz Ave.? Kind of like Malone with their Glasiers. Everyone bought them but I was never that impressed with them.. In fact if I'm not mistaken Voss's use to use Durrs as their brand for quite a few years. Durrs name was on the sign over their place. I always thought Durrs was the ones that produced the Pilgrim brand. Besides the bright red color Pilgrims did taste somewhat like Durrs. Hey Clipper, we managed to do it again. ;D Hi jacked another subject. Picture this. A hot dog, (no matter what brand), wrapped in a half moon.

I remember Durr's Packing Company being on Barnes Ave. Just over the bridge from Oriskany St. They served their hot dogs at ALL the local places. The Northern Lghts in N Utica, Voss's, the place that used to be where Holland Farms is now, and the Woodside Drive-in in Holland Patent. They were excellent hotdogs. Just another piece of Utica History gone but not forgotten.

Yes, their factory was on Barnes Ave., but their Offices was on Wurz Ave. Did alot of business with them through WKTV and the Boys Scouts. They use to make alot of donations to many organizations in this area. Good people!

Hell i wanted hot dogs, didn't need to meet the administration of the company, so I never knew about the place on Wurz ave, haha!

Put them big suckers on and "stomp out the crime in your neighborhood!" LOL.

Nope wasn't Bozo or a movie star but did work with them setting up guest for Bozo's show that use to be on WKTV. ;D If ya remember Clipper, Bozo always had a live audience who were usually local kids from different organizations such as the Boy and Girl Scouts, schools and etc. Bozo would pick a couple of kids out of his audience and have them play a game blowing a ping-pong ball and the winner got a box of Durr's products to take home. That's how I knew where their office was. Had to pick up things from them from time to time. It was pretty cool and the kids loved it.

Reading posts on line about Half Moons I discovered that my old boss, (when I worked at MetLife) Tom Batters bought Hemstroughts. That was a surprise to me but then I do remember making him a giant Cupcake cookie jar from my ceramics class for him. I guess he had the desire to fill it. (I have been tempted to write to him to see if he'd part with the recipe)

I think the half moons at Walmart are the original Hemstroughts - don't know who makes them or where, but that's what I heard

Here's how I make half moons.
1. Drive to Holland Farms in Oriskany. 2. Buy a box of half moons. 3. Eat and smile.

Those are Hemstrought's Halfmoons. They still make them on Oswego Street.
