Ironically, just opened my days mail and guess what I just received.........my approval from Oneida County Judge, Michael L. Dwyer, for my pistol permit! Reading all the information they sent I now have six months to pick up my license. It took me approximately five months since I applied. ;D

Well Corner, from the document I received today I already have it. Just have to provide proof of purchase or transfer of the gun, information about the gun, bring a check and then pick up my license. This document I received states it is proof to purchase a firearm from any license dealer so why would I be in any jeopardy?

It has been required for as long as I can remember for a person to list each and every handgun that they own on their pistol permit. It is a criminal offense to own a handgun and not have it properly annotated on your pistol permit if I remember correctly.
I remember when I got my pistol permit in NY many years ago, I had to buy the gun and have the gun dealer hold it until the permit was approved. You had tg have purchased a gun, yet you could not take the gun home until you were approved for your pistol permit.
I once had an old 38 pistol that had been in the family ever since my great grandparents ran a hotel and restaurant near the gate to the old Savage Arms in Utica. In order to get that weapon registered properly when my grandfather died, my dad had to have a law enforcement officer hold it "on his badge" until I got a permit so I could possess it. My dad was giving me the gun when they moved here to Tennessee.
It had been in a trunk in my grandmother's house until she died, and in a trunk in my parents attic until they remembered they had it when they were getting ready to move here to Tennessee. I had it checked out and it was not safe to fire, so I sold it to a gun dealer in Rome that simply wanted it as a collector piece.
Pistols in NY State have been required to be listed on a permit (registered) for as long as I can remember. If I am incorrect in that assumption, Corner can probably correct me.

Congrads BZ, glad to hear it, 5 months isnt bad I suppose. Onondaga announced a 15 month wait last month. Im pretty sure you didnt buy it because your afraid of any imminent threats because if you were, 5 months to own a legal firearm you could keep close probably would have been about 4 3/4's months too long.
Orders of protection keep some bad folks from hurting their intended victims but very often they are violated with extremely violent outcomes. If a Speedy trial is required by the constitution, speedy access to legal weapons seems reasonable also. 5 months is not speedy, my SI/ Sensitive Information Clearance (Presidential level) took about 2 months to complete to allow me Access to info that would cause damage to the security of our nation if compromised. If they can do a complete lifetime FBI investigation in less than 2 Months, determine if your safe to buy a rifle in less than one day, Bullets instantly, they can allow you your 2nd amendment rights unfettered ASAP.
Its not a new trick to skirt the legal rights of citizens by putting up roadblocks, charging fees many people cant afford and just making it difficult but that's illegal. There was never a time clause on on Bill of Rights, either prove Im not legal to own something or get out of the way. 5 months, 5 weeks or 5 days are all wrong according to the basis rights and responsibilities of the laws of our Nation. Its not about feelings, its about Rights.

congratulations. Now you can feel safe. I wish I had one. Actually Alan, I didn't apply for my permit for that reason. Ya can call it as having a way for more family time together. Want to go to the target range with my boys and some of my friends. Plus, my boys wanted me to get a permit just in case something happened to them so I could take possession of the guns they own. When it came to protection or feeling safe whether be it at camp or home I always had my pellet rifle handy. Worked for me. They are fairly cheap. Maybe you should think about getting one for yourself.

The gun purchased will be registered on your permit that's why you have to call in advance the information about the gun and have a recipe from the dealer or transfer information from the person you are receiving the gun from before you go to pick up your license.

BZ, I really like you so do us all a huge favor cause I wann a chatter with you a long time; never pull a Pellet gun on someone who could and would harm you. Ive popped Squirrels, muskrats and coons with my .22 cal and many keep running a .22 cal is about 3 times as heavy, 4 times the maximum effective range and about 10 times the velocity of a .22 cal pellet. Crooks dont carry pellet guns, they carry whatever they want, legal or not. If crooks can fight off pepper spray, Tazers and other non lethal things, a bullet the size of a BB moving just a little faster is just gonna piss them off and get you and yours killed. Go fill that permit with a nice mid solid frame sized 38 or 357, its a practical and controllable piece. Make the terms of the sale of the piece that you can buy enough ammo to at least get good with it, that could be a tough find. Teach the grandkids with the pellet gun.

I hope whatever weapon you purchased does not have a magazine with a capacity of more than 7 rounds.

My son already has one and the ammo he is giving me that I can handle well. ;D Suggesting to Alan about getting a pellet rifle will give him some sense of protection. I will give an scenario that happened to me and then Alan can decide if what I suggested is good for him also. I was home alone one night when living on Andes Ave and my dog went to my back door and started to go crazy barking so I peeked out at my enclosed back yard and saw two men prowling around my patio. I called 911 to report it but in the meantime the men were on my patio so I flipped on my patio light and stepped in my family room in front of my patio doors aiming the rifle at them. Both men high-tailed it back over my fence and were no where around when the police got there. The officer said when they saw me aiming the rifle at them that there was no way they could tell it was just a pellet rifle and that definitely scared them off. I guess the criminal world do spread their info around cause after that I never had a problem again. My pellet rifle gave me a sense of relief at camp and at my home just having it handy. For Alan, especially since he doesn't have a pistol permit, might feel that same relief by having one. It's up to him to decide whats best for him.
