A friend is getting $65 an hour running a backhoe on government jobs. $34 per hour on jobs done for earthlings. I didn't become a backhoe operator for the same reason Swimmy didn't. I presume we each thought we could do better in another job in the attainment of money and prestige. I'm not sure I know what prestige is anymore, but I do know what money is. Today I'd take the money. But in younger days I wanted both. Any wonder why government is going broke and taxes are so high??!! Holy rape city!

FA: That's right. It is simply amazing that such goes on even today when people are groaning under the burden of higher taxes. I don't know how these municipal contracts come about, but I believe the rates are established at the state level. Does anyone know anything about how this works?

Under NY state law a contractor must pay "prevailing wages and benefits" when working on a public contract. These rates are supposedly set according to local rates. An example here: www.comptroller.nyc.gov/bureaus/bll/schedules.shtmSeveral pdf's of wage tables are linked there. Although they should reflect local rates, in the upstate area rates paid on public projects seem higher than those on private projects. I don't know about other areas.
