Spell check on Proboards is broken and the developers are working on it, according to a forum I just looked at. But you know Proboards, they seem to take forever to fix anything.
I think I at one time had the firefox spellchecker and it worked fine. IF you use Firefox when you view this forum. I tend to use FIrefox here, Chrome elsewhere. I usually have both up and running simultaneously.

I also feel that some of the ISPs in the area, or at least Verizion, have deliberately cut the speed on some services over the past year in an effort to make folks upgrade to a faster bandwidth. Things that used to load for me fairly fast now seem to drag on longer that they used to. I have seen this regardless what PC I am using here. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it just drags. [/quote] Use a speed checker to test the speed of your Internet connection and make a note of it from time to time. I use speedtest.net Right now I'm getting 11.33 Mbps download, which is normal for my service, and 10.80 Mbps upload, which is very fast. Both those numbers were obtained through a router, but with the desktop PC hardwired to it. Getting about the same over the air with WiFi, so the router is not very busy. Click here to test your speed: speedtest.net

Alan, That situation is understandable. If you hit the down arrow of down sidebar and nothing happens, the natural reaction is to click it again.
I'm getting Proboards not responding myself right now.

I am getting 66.4 download and 4.37 upload. Not that I know how that actually translates to the performance I am getting at present.

I sometimes get a frozen screen and the error message that "shockwaveflash may be busy or it may have stopped responding" and blocks to click on to either continue or to stop the plug-in. It just happened a few minutes ago and when I didn't do anything, it closed the page and I had to re-open my browser and start over.

Alan, I think the less expensive cable plan calls for about 5 to 7 Mbps speed, so you may have that plan and would be getting the appropriate speed. Download occurs when you copy something down from the Internet ... a web page, a letter file, a movie, a youtube, etc. Up load is when you send something up to the Internet. Like mail, but especially large files attached to your mail. E.g., you send a 3 MB file of a photo to a friend, or just up to this Board. An Upload speed of 1.19 seems a bit slow, but ... again ... I don't know your plan. You can call the company and ask what to expect.

It's $39.99 but I rent the modem for $10.00/month.

My #1 son was here for the last couple days and yesterday he spent some time trying to determine why Barb's computer seemed to be so slow on the internet. One of the things he discovered is that our router seemed to think we were on Pacific time. He sid that the time mismatch could cause communication problems with some sites, No idea how that could change.

Alan, unless you're doing a lot of streaming, up and downloading graphics, music, etc., 7 Mbps would seem more than adequate. Hell, I use to run a website on dial-up!
The problem I have with Proboards most often is an apparent slow-down in their ability to accept what I'm typing. I'll type three characters and have to wait a few seconds before I can type more. I have no idea why that happens, but its annoying.
Another constant problem that affects "speed" on my PC is Firefox hanging up. Firefox is famous for "memory leaks." These occur when Firefox starts to reserve main memory for itself when it doesn't need it. Right now, for example, on this 8 Gb desktop, Firefox is "using" 4 gigs of memory. That's 4,000 MB. That's ridiculous. It shouldn't need more than 40 MB to do what it's currently doing. On my old 1 gig machine, Firefox would leak to about 400 MB.

And a call to Time Warner or whoever your service provider is.

I just switch over to Word or more often to Jarte, type my response and then copy/paste it into the forum.

Right now we are experiencing issues with our landline. No phone service, but the internet is still running, go figure. My best speed over the past couple weeks, on my hardwired desktop, has been Download @ 0.86Mbps / Upload @ 0.19 Mbps with a 51 Ms latency period and we have to reboot the Verizon modem/router at least twice a day because the connection drops off.
I'm hoping that when they have the phone service fixed (promised by tomorrow @ 8pm) that it will correct itself. If not, then it's on to troubleshooting Verizon. My system is fine, just the DSL sucks.
