Very sad indeed. I am not of the generation that was a great fan of his, but it is sad to see another talented musician dead before their time. Even sadder is the possibility that it may have involved drug abuse and it's effects on his health.
There was a link on line this morning alleging that his emergency landing in Moline Illinois recently, supposedly due to flu like symptoms, is alleged to have actually been caused by an opiate overdose.

It is sad that booze and drugs have had such and impact as the cause of death for so many talented musicians over the years, going back to singers like Hank Williams, Elvis and continuing with Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, and now possibly Prince. May he rest in peace.
