www.uticaod.com/news/20160325/computers-held-hostage-use-of-ransomware-growing-trendA reminder and suggestions for avoiding ransomware. Some of you may remember when my desktop was taken hostage by a ransom ware infection. The virus changed all my passwords and made my life miserable. It cost me over $100 to get rid of it, plus all the aggravation of changing all my passwords, and in some cases necessitating closing accounts and opening new ones. My particular problem occurred when I clicked on a prompt that suggested that my Adobe Flash Player drivers were in need of updating. You can only imagine the surprise and the helpless feeling caused by not being able to access your own emails etc. I was lucky that it had minimal impact other than the inconvenience. Others may not be so lucky and could have financial information and other important data compromised. I DID lose some photos that I had stored on my hard drive. Take heed of the information provided by this particular article. It will save you a boatload of inconvenience and a significant amount of money that you can avoid having to pay a technician to clean up the mess.

Thanks for the heads-up, Clipper. I've gotten messages regarding updating my drivers but haven't clicked on them. Good thing, I guess. I'm becoming more and more leery about things popping up that I haven't asked for.

Only use the automatic updates that come with the programs on your computer. I was just reminded that my Java needs to be updated however I read that Microsoft Edge doesn't use Java but I update anyway since Internet Explorer does use Java.
