www.wktv.com/news/local/18700199.htmlIt is great that he wants to clean up the City. But how about enforcing some tougher laws against the hoodlums that are doing it in the first place. They have been talking about holding these absentee landlords more accountable for years. C'mon Mayor David Roefaro it's time to get with the program!

So many ordinances......so little enforcemment. Who will enforce it anyway..........Codes?? One more thing to bang on property owners with and nothing to stop the problem. I've got drug dealers and prostitutes back in my neighborhood again after getting rid of them several years ago and now we're going to go after graffiti. Go figure!

It might work, Ralph. Rudy Gulliani demonstrated in NYC that if you arrest a lot of petty crooks (turnstile jumpers in the subway), you end up taking a lot of big crooks off the streets too.

Oh I understand that aspect, but this is not about catching those doing it, it's about making those it was inflicted upon clean it up.
Reactive as usual instead of proactive.

If the graffiti is on a city building and it's not cleaned up in 71 hours, does LaBella write a ticket for Roefaro?

I have always been in favor of cracking down on a lot of the petty crime in our area and elsewhere. The $64,000 question is whether or not our court and jail system as it exists now can handle the extra volume.
If not maybe that is something worth paying to expand.

Don't need a jail. Make a mandatory community service and make them clean the City.
One of two things will happen:
1) No more graffiti 2) A super clean City
A win win for everybody!

Offer a reward to anyone who turns in one of these graffiti taggers.

Hmmm. I have to agree with Todd about making community service a penalty for some of these offenders. The property owners should not be penalized, the graffiti spraying the crap on buildings and bridges should be.
I would think a lot of "punk" egos could be deflated, by finding some "demeaning" labor for them to do, that would bring ridicule and laughing from their peers.
We have litter patrols here in Tennessee. Recently a doctor was charged and convicted of DWI, and was put on the litter patrol. I have to think that taking a couple of hundred hours away from a lucrative medical practice, to pick up trash, must have had a very big impact on his ego. It also put him out in the public eye, and most likely cost him some patients. I would bet he will be much more careful, as his next offense is 1 year in the county, here in our area.

Community service is a great solution....if those convicted of the crime would perform it. What do you do with those that are sentenced to community service and then fail to show up? There is no doubt in my mind that those who willfully deface public and private property have very little respect for the law and therefore it stands to reason that many would refuse to cooperate with a sentence of community service. At that point you have to throw them in jail...which comes back to the question of whether or not there is enough space.

I think given the ultimatum, do the work or jail for 30 days. Most will do the work. As far as overcrowding in the jail. I am not sure on OCJ status. Maybe wcup can answer that question

Let's catch the thugs first, then will worry what to do with them. I would still bet they will be ready to work at 6am sharp!
