I just downloaded the Avast free version on this laptop. I used the link that was labeled Avast.com and when it downloaded it also installed Google Chrome on my computer. I already have IE and Firefox on here. Is there any harm in having all three browsers? Is it possible to simply delete and uninstall the Google Chrome without losing the Avast?

No harm but that auto download is annoying. There was a check box somewhere in the process that got missed. You should be able to uninstall it without a problem.

Clipper... give Google Chrome a try first. I use Chrome almost exclusively and you might like it. If you like the others better, just delete Chrome and I don't believe Avast will be affected.

Thanks guys. I will give it a try and maybe I will dump IE instead at some point. I imagine that having three browsers takes up a lot of memory. I am leaving for NY tomorrow and I will have a little time over the next couple of weeks to play with it. I don't use the laptop except on vacations and when we travel. See you guys soon. Hope to have coffee with you Kit and I have that stuff to give you Clarence. I will get in touch with you when we are settled and see if we can coordinate a quick coffee or something.

A program installed on your PC that is not running shouldn't take up any main memory, just space on your hard drive. That said, some programs have kind of pre-cursor running so that when you choose the program it comes up faster. Usually the small precursor is not very large and often it can be turned off. There are other programs that can be installed when you install the program you want. These can be update programs specifically for the program you're want to run. Or they can be entire system virus software, It pays to take the time to do the long path install where you can say no to lots of these programs.
