I just received a call from a "private number" and it was a recording telling me that "my computer was generating some serious errors and that I should press 1 to speak to Microsoft engineers immediately."
I suppose I should have pressed 1 and spoke to whoever answered and inquired a little bit about what it was that was allegedly happening. Would have been interesting to hear what they had to say as long as I didn't give them any information. Probably would have been someone with foreign accent attempting to hack into a person's system to steal information of one sort or another, or to sell me a software package that would correct the alleged errors in my system. I don't get into anything the least bit suspicious since having to pay to have both my desk top and my laptop scrubbed to get rid of the Astomenda virus a few months ago.

Yup, it's a scam. Some might call it a legitimate business, but I'd call it a scam. I don't think you would get to talk to a Microsoft engineer, and besides, who says they don't lie? Probably some company who wants to sell you an anti-virus package.
I'm not even running anti-virus software anymore. They slow down the machine, have their own problems and seem to be bested by too many of the modern viruses. I bought a copy of Spybot and run it every few weeks or so. I leave no resident Spybot programs running between the times when I run the Scan. I back up stuff from my hard drive to an outboard hard drive.
