www.wktv.com/news/local/18488554.htmlUp to 64 cameras can feed thru one monitor. Right now there are six throughout Utica. Is it going to work? Well at this point it certainly can't hurt. The best part is that nobody has to sit and actually monitor these cameras day and night. Hopefully the clarity is good and they will be able identify people committing crimes. Hard to imagine without someone sitting there to zoom the camera in on a subject. What are your thoughts?

IMO - I think the entire idea is absolutely great. According to the DA's office, many of the residents on James Street are all in favor of these cameras and approached the installers asking if a camera could be placed on their front porch! I believe these cameras will give a sense of security to the homeowners and law abiding citizens that are forced to live in this area due to economic reasons.
WKTV showed a video clip of the camera being fed into the DA's office of James Street and the clarity was excellent. It showed a car blowing thru a stop sign without even slowing down or stopping. I wonder how many other violations this camera will pick up.
For those that must drive thru this area - be careful at stop signs as no one is stopping at them on the other side!

Depending on the resolution of the cameras/lenses the zoom function may be pretty good, and they may actually get decent pictures out of them if they need it.
However, keep in mind that this isn't CSI were talking about here. The magical camera shots they pull up from a zillion feet away that wind up being so perfect that they can count the zits on some teeny boppers face...............is bull.
But if they have an "incident" in location of one of these cameras it will prove to be a great piece in the evidence chain for both arrests and convictions.

The videos shown in the WKTV coverage looked pretty darned good. These aren't your typical security surveillance flicks.

Consider that all banks have tons of cameras, every thief knows this but still hundreds try robbing them every year.
In our stores we have tons of cameras, all the employees know it, yet some still think they can get away with ripping us or their fellow works off.
Despite the warning on electrical appliances that say "Do Not Use In Water".............some idiot will die trying.
The cameras will be great for incidents "after the fact", but will provide little or no deterrent in them happening.

These cameras look similar to what we have at the courthouse. The zoom camera we have can zoom up to almost 2 blocks before quality is lost. We have watched people walk to their cars, zoomed in on a guy waiting in his car and picking his nose LOL!!! No sex shots yet thought. The still cameras could be better but they work good enough. We can zoom from the county building to the state building pretty good.

I kind of figured they were better quality cameras than some usually use. My only concern would be if they are using VHS or digital recovery methods.
But either way, it will be a great tool when needed.
