abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=4742648&page=1This video of a father's words of his son were truly heart wenching and shocking. Instead of complaining about the war maybe we should be complaining about how our hero's are being treated and forced to live. This saddens me to think our Men and Women have not down enough for our country and this is the way we repay them.

Our Prison system is like a royal palace compared to this. Disgusting when a convicted felon is treated better than our Men and Women that are fighting for the very freedom we live by.

Do you wonder why there are so many homeless vets? Being homeless is a step up from living in a barracks.

Amen to everything said above. Taking advantage of a soldier's loyalty and training to place them in housing any other person would rightly complain about does nothing for the long term morale of our men and women in uniform. But isn't technology great? Not so long ago, an angry parent would have spent many useless days and months trying to convince the media to do an expose' on Ft. Bragg. Today, an angry parent simply whips out his camcorder, uploads the "tape" to Youtube and .....voila. Sorta scary, too.

You all want to know the sad thing about this? The only Installations with barracks and living conditions like this are the Installations where the soldiers are really earning their pay, I.E Ft. Bragg, Ft. Stewart, Ft. Hood. The top Generals get their money and instead of putting some toward improving the quality of life, they place it all in training funds, weapon's maintenance funds, vehicles and their office, you can't have a General sitting in office suite purchased from Office Depot. Oh then there is his fully funded TDY's.
When I was a young SGT, they had barracks like that and I honestly told the soldiers if I had to live in it I'd be AWOL and gone back home. I actually felt dirty when I walked out of that building. Mildew everywhere, leaking pipes, puddles in the middle of the floor and old filthy matresses, it was awful. As a newly promoted SSG, I moved to Ft. Huachuca AZ and the house they gave me for my family to live in was no better. Cracked floors and ceilings, it was horrible. Thank god the Army got smart and created the IMA (Installation Management Agency) their total focus is quality of life for soldiers and post services. After about 2 years of suffering I was finally moved into a newly built house. I think it's unacceptable to have soldiers living in substandard conditions it lowers moral.

The descrepancies between the Army and the rest of the military has always been shocking, to say the least. When I was in the Navy, I was in Long Beach Calif. for a period of time. I lived in San Pedro, and used both the facilities at the naval shipyard, and at Fort McCarthur in San Pedro. The poor quality of the facilities and the items available at the Army commissary and Post Exchange was shocking when you were able to compare it with the Navy facility just across the harbor.
I have also seen the same differences in Germany while working for the Air Force. We stayed at a Casserne, near Sembach one time while TDY, and the facilities were disgusting, compared to the facilities afforded our Air Force folks, at Lindsey Air Station, and down around the Kaiserslaughterne Military Community.
It is time for the Pentagon, to seriously overhaul the facilities, and take a serious look at the living conditions for our Army troops in general. The Army is our largest branch of our military defense system. They carry the largest load into combat, and are the first boots on the ground in most major conflicts. They are the backbone of our country's defenses, and need to be afforded the respect, and comforts that should go with sacrificing the privileges of civilian life to serve our country, and defend our freedoms.
Thanks again for what you are doing for our country as a career soldier Jr. It is appreciated by this old goat that worked for 20+years for the military and has seen what the army does for our country. Especially in post war Europe, and Germany in particular. I don't think people realize the scenarios that you guys protect us from even with the winding down of the cold war. Terror is the new enemy and defending us against it in Europe and the Middle East prevents a lot of it from coming to our own shores.
God bless you JrCummings, and God bless all of our soldiers, past and present on this memorial day weekend.
