Boy dies after being submerged under water!

Another tragic event with a child and water. This one really hit home for me because my boy is 9yrs old and loves the water. We were just out fishing on Saturday with his new fishing pole. We were on top of a bank about 8ft above the water with nothing in between us and the water. I can't help to think about the terrible "what if". He wanted to go again today, but I could not bring myself to do so.

I know what your thinking, why were we on the bank instead of the side of the water? Well, because my son wanted to be able to look down into the water and see the fish. Although we had a great time Father and son bonding on a great afternoon, I would not do it again (on the bank). As the adult I need to be more aware of the possible danger vs making my son happy.

This story does not give much information of the details and leaves one with allot of unanswered questions. My heart and prayers go out to the child's family and may he rest in peace.

Todd, I brought up my two sons fishing on the waters edge or in my little "Bass Hunter".
Throw a life jacket on him if you are worried about it.
While they didn't like it when I had them do it, it settled my mind and allowed them to fish that close without me freaking out.

They had to wear one in the little boat or when we were in situations where there was the possibility of them taking a tumble in off a bank.

They did remember my concern, and now my oldest takes his daughters our to fish the same way.

Your absolutely correct and I feel like a dumb ass about it now. I should have known better, although I really did not have a concern then. It was a small shallow creek and yes I know the dangers still existed, this story just made me think a little bit more about preventing them in the future.

Parenting is not an exercise in perfection, but a learn as you go experience.
You can consider it perfection when you see the attributes you had to struggle so hard to find being exercised by your children on their own.

My daughters all paid the price as they were the last in line.
They went fishing looking like they were going out on a king crab ship in Alaska!!!! LOL!

Here's a picture for you. Now imagine a grown man and a 13 year old boy out on Delta lake fishing.......just off the State Park campsites where you can get in at the little bay that is there.

No 4 hp motor, just dumbass dad with this stupid little "boat" and a trolling motor on it.
And "No".....I didn't have a marine battery either........hahahaha.

Now imagine this pair of idiots putt-putting across the lake past the beach over to the boat launch........yes.......admist the jet skis, water skiers, and other pleasure craft out on a busy weekend.

Well is it ABS and foam filled.

But it acts like a fisherman's bobber during a tidal wave when a real boat goes by!!! LOL!!!
I've been out on boats in the Gulf of Mexico and off of Florida, but this was the only time I ever felt like tossing my cookies.

Worse than being on a "Tilt-a-Whirl" at the fair!

Needless to say we confined or adventures to smaller bodies of water after that.

Just remember for the next time if you feel your going to toss your cookies (sitting in the back) to turn your head left or right, do not lean forward. Haha

Well despite that encounter on the lake, my oldest caught his first decent size Bass there.

It is a great boat and I still use it on and off. They loved it when they would get to go up the Mohawk with it one by one.
We would make a day of it. And while we never kept anything (if we caught it) we enjoyed the time together.

With a 4-5 hp motor on it along with the trolling one, it is the perfect craft for really getting into anyplace.

Can't wait to explore with it when we get to Indiana.

This is so horrible! My son is 8 and we have a pond on the farm. I was anal before, I'll be even more so now. I even make my kids wear life jackets when they go ICE fishing. I watched a video of a child falling into a pool. There were other kids around playing and this 2 year old fell into the pool and nobody even noticed. There was NO splash. The adults didn't hear either. Someone finally noticed and pulled him up.

I told my son about this little boy. I told him even though he is 8, this still can happen. Awful, awful awful!!!

What are they implying by phrasing it, "Boy dies after being submerged under water"? From that I have the impression that someone physically submerged this poor boy under water. Where were the parents? What was the boy doing near a pond, unattended? Is it me or does seem like an article the od would have authored?
