Since I'm not supposed to be up on ladders anymore and I haven't even asked the local Home Owner's Association about putting up a weather station, I bought this neat device at Sam's or Costco that gives me the barometric pressure, wind speed and direction and forecast with nothing on my roof. It links through the internet to a local weather data source ... probably the local airport ... and sends that information to a display on my desk. The only weather instrument involved is a remote sensing thermometer outside my door. Since the wind and barometric data probably aren't much different between my house and the airport, it's just like having my own weather instruments but without the bother of buying them and climbing up on the roof to set them in place. And of course, they never blow down and their batteries don't wear out. But now having read the article you posted, Clip, I wonder if I should be worried about weather spam. What if someone hacks the system and maliciously predicts a four foot snow storm for Myrtle Beach to get me to go out and buy a snow blower? Luckily I wouldn't know where to buy one down here. But what if the hacker puts out a deep freeze warning so that I'll decide to buy a heavy coat and give an extra shot in the arm to the outdoor clothing industry? This is truly something to be worried about. And the next time I have nothing better to do than idly write a post like this one I'm writing I'll think about worrying over how my electronics may be lying to me.

I simply shake my head when I see some of the new electronic devices. I thought it was rather far fetched to have a flat screen tv in the door of the refrigerator. I imagine that by now there are tablets in the doors and you can keep your grocery list and pantry inventory updated on the door. Buy snowblower? Didn't you bring yours with you from NY "just in case?" When my mom and dad moved here with Univac in 76, one of the engineers brought along an Arctic Cat snowmobile, thinking he would be the coolest guy in town when that freak storm came along. My dad said that when the guy died about 15 yrs later, his son took it back to NY where he could actually ride it. I guess some of them also brought their snow blowers. Even though back in the 70's they actually DID get 4 or 5 inches a few times, the snow was too wet and heavy to blow with a snowblower. We brought a snow shovel and THAT has never been used in the 11 yrs that we have been here. A corn broom to sweep a path to the truck and newspaper tube is all that has ever been necessary. Incidentally, since my fall from that ladder several years ago, when you advised me not to get my rear end any higher than my shoulders would be when standing on the ground, I don't climb either. No weather station here. If my red truck is white I know it's snowing, if the driveway is wet I know it rained or is raining. We have a thermometer on the garage with large numerals, and a weather vane on the garage roof. I DO miss my weather station that I had when I lived on Kayuta Lake. It was mounted on a 18 foot pole that was mounted between two posts in the ground, similar to how some flagpoles are mounted, allowing the pole to be lowered by removing a bolt and tipping it down for maintenance. No ladder necessary. The monitor display was mounted on the dining room wall next to the patio door. I wonder if Westmoguy still has that station that we used to have a live link to on the forum?

Are you getting a blast of cold weather over there Dave? It didn't go above freezing here today and we are getting a light dusting of snow. Not even enough to cover the ground. Just enough for me to freeze my dupa when I have to take the dog out to wander, lol.

That's great. Thanks Clarence. I bookmarked it. Much easier than trying to check the weather on the OD page or WKTV.

I've got a cold, so have been sticking around the house.

A lot of colds going around. Seems like I have spent more time WITH one than WITHOUT this winter. I am just getting over one and Kathy is just coming down with it. Alka Seltzer Plus stock should be up this quarter. I hope you feel better soon. I am a coffee drinker, but I have found myself leaning toward the comforting warmth of hot green tea with lemon and honey. In fact I may float away this morning. I had my normal glass of juice, a cup of coffee, milk on my cereal, and now I am sipping a big cup of tea. I may slosh when I walk, haha.

Hey you can now use your smartphone to start your washing machine and dryer. I wonder how the smartphone gets the cloths into the washing machine and then the dryer!

I heard on Dr. Oz that it will kill off many cold viruses. I also use hand sanatizer a lot. When I am on the bus I wash down the bar on the seat in front of me. I also wear a surgical mask when I am around people and do not shake hands with anyone. One more thing also works very well. Put a little vasoline in each nostril when outside it will capture bacteria and also filter out small pollutants. WHen in doubt stay away from people in general they are to germy this time during flu season. If you go to the Doctor's do not touch anything or touch your face. I also carry a bottle of spay lysol--can't be to careful now a days.

I use the weatherbug on my PC (currently reading 10F...burrr and to get colder) it lets you find out all about the weather anywhere. And when the weather has alerts I here it start chirping so I know to "beware" of what's coming.

I heard that oil of oregano is good (Dr. OZ) for colds.. A few drops in hot water and put a towel over head and lean in for breathing in the vapors.
For tea I use elderberry tea. Besides being effective it has a very nice taste /scent similar to camomile.
