Ken Gordon - the dentist. Sure I know him. I didn't know the sons at all, but I'd see Ken and his lady friend at our concerts in the NH Village Park on Wednesday nights in July. He's friends with a couple who used to live on Pearl St. - Jim & June Abel. Jim plays the trobone and is now in a concert (?) band in Oswego called "The New Horizons." I don't know if Ken has gotten up to see them yet. Hope to see Ken this summer in the park.

Yes, the dentist. I know he likes the old bands music and use to go to the Newport Jazz fests. We have our own here now. Rochester Jazz Fest coming up real soon. Also the Lilac Fest next month. My favorite are the Cornhill and the Park Ave Fests (some music but mostly arts and crafts and fun.

Hey there Kit: Yup - I remember all that. Got some funny photos of me and Donald Graff in kindergarten - what a bunch of pitiful looking brats we were. Fun to look at though. Guess you know that Tess passed on a few years back - I think she was just into her 90s. Maureen just retired last year and she and Kathy are in Brookline, NH. Our son Matt is in Phoenix (Southwest Pilot) and Cara, our daughter, is in San Diego (Social Worker). Both have families now and their own homes. I remember all those people from Oxford Road and bunches of other kids from the side streets.
Nice equipment you guys picked up. Hope you still have it - worth a mint now. Wish I had my 64 Strat and 65 SG!
I remember Jimmy Gaylord - we hung around together for a bit. He was a pretty good drummer as I remember. I remember him as a rather hyper guy who could not stay in one place very long.
Don't know if Eric and Dale will be on the string or not. Eric got Jon's email from me and they are communicating. Eric is sending Jon pictures so that's where the latest flurry of activity on the Chessmen is coming from. Dale is in Medford, MA - semi retired and a history buff. He and Lindsey have been there 33 years. Eric is in LA - not sure how long he has been there but it's awhile.
The thought hit me a couple of weeks ago that maybe we guys that were in the Chessmen over the years should write a story about the group and try to publish it. Eric and Dale are up for it and I think Jon is also. Dale is going to touch base with Slivers and Eric is in touch with Joe so stay tuned - more to come. I started a draft manuscript and the next step is for Eric to begin providing the details of the story line. I'm sure it will be a good while to put this together but I think we can come up with a really interesting history of the group and some rather inspiring examples of how our experiences helped us along the way in life. Hopefully, the story would prove to be interesting to a broad spectrum of people. Anyway, it would be allot of fun to do and we would feel good about it, I think. We'll see how it goes.
Good to hear from you. Hope all is well and take care!
Chuck

For all you guys out there in Web land who were booked by Gene Kipper. I have a 3 to 4 min. CD of Gene on the phone with my friend Bernie talking about booking a job at the college Bernie went to at the time. It was recorded in 1969 on a cassette tape. I thought I lost the tape. Years went by, I found it and transfered it to a CD. It's classic Gene.

I like the idea of a history of the Chessmen. I beleive all us former members have plenty of stories. As an original participant of the foundation, I can add some additional information. A published book with royalties would be great. Only my lucky and super talented relatives are earning royalties from past recordins and performances. 70% luck-30% talent.
There was an earlier post about George DeAngelo, a very good dancer at the Moose club. That was my father, also a very good musician with the Utica Symphony in its earlier years. My father was also the manager of the concessions at the War Memorial from the day it opened. One of his many additional jobs. I had the opportunity to meet may of the great performers during the fifties and sixties. My father would take me back stage to meet, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, Bobby Vinton, Bobby Rydell, etc. The one performer who did stayed away was Johnny Mathis. He arrived in his limo behind the stage, perform and back in his limo. A lot of great memories. The best performance I recall during those years was by James Brown. I thought the roof was going to collapse from the crowd noise. He was a talented and energetic performer, non stop.

Pardon the mis-spelling. My mind and typing hands are numb from tax season work. One more day remaining, then back to writing and performing.

Butch, I don't remember the post that you are speaking of, but I did belong to the moose club and envied your father's expertise on the dance floor. Kathy and I used to dance there often, and your mom and dad moved like they were one. Excellent ballroom dancers, and fun to watch. I also didn't know that he was also a musician. He was a nice man. We chatted often while working in and around the kitchen and dining room. I am talking about way back in the eighties, when Rodney and Mary Hoch were the cooks.
I didn't know your mom well, but I used to volunteer in the kitchen for fish fries and to help out when the women had a dinner. George was always a willing volunteer at all the lodge activities.
Did you belong to the lodge?

Dino - Does the tape contain Gene's favorite saying: "I'm dying the death of a mf'n dog"? Eric and Dale and I used to crack up every time he said it which was pretty regularly as I remember.
Butch - all inputs are welcome and credits will definitely be acknowledged in the book. Eric has started working on the storyline and plans to record it and send me the electronic files. The transcription should be a major job, I'm sure. Going to have to get it into the computer before I can edit and compile. Hopefully, I can train my software to recognize his voice sufficiently that I can get most of the voice to text work done for me.

Chuck, Gene didn't say anything that racy on the tape. He was quite tame for Gene. He did say, "come on up an see me"! But as we all know there we a ton of "Gene'isums'. I'll just share one because the ones I know and have herd of would fill the page. If a person in a band complained about a job like where it was or something, Gene would look at them and say, "Well Jes*%# Chr%%$# Eric did it!!!!

Dino -- Yup, that sounds just like Gene. But then, he was right, Eric did about everything one could do to make it work. He was (and still is, I presume) one of the mose focused and driven people I have ever known. Nothing like a dream you believe in to keep one moving! --Chuck--
